Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I see the Big 5?
The Big 5–lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino–can be seen in several of our favorite safari destinations. However, some locations offer a better chance of spotting all five than others, especially if you have limited time to visit. The most well-known and promising of these locations are the game reserves around South Africa's Kruger National Park, such as Sabi Sands and Timbavati. You can certainly see the Big 5 in Kenya and Tanzania as well, but allow for more time here to track the animals across larger plains. It's important to communicate what wildlife is important for you to see so we can set you up for the best possible chances of encountering various game.
Should I go to South Africa or East Africa?
South Africa is perfect for the "beginner safari." Private game reserves ensure high-density wildlife sightings, and the city of Cape Town, along with the winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, allows for a diverse itinerary. East Africa offers a more romantic, traditional safari experience with iconic scenes of the African savanna and wildlife freely roaming across the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya. Our experts can help you decide based on your preferences and travel goals.
When is the best time to go on safari?
It depends on the destination and what your goals are for your safari. In South Africa, May through September is ideal due to the dry season in Kruger, which means less vegetation and better wildlife sight lines. In Botswana, June through August is perfect as the Okavango Delta experiences peak floods. For the Great Migration in East Africa, the best time to visit is between late June and mid-October to see the immense herds of animals and possibly witness an epic river crossing!
Where do I even begin?
Scenset's safari experts are here to help. We'll start with some insightful questions to understand your travel goals, including the wildlife you're interested in seeing, the landscapes you envision traversing, and the type of lodging you prefer. These questions will help us determine the best safari destination for you.
