Eco-Chic in Vietnam

Start with the house, then add the tree

First, there were the treehouses that sprang up on Airbnb. Then came Italian architect Stefano Boeri, whose Bosque Vertical in Milan served as a prototype for architectural biodiversity focused not just on human residents, but also on the needs of other living species. Meanwhile, VTN architects, a Vietnamese architecture firm, took note and presented the boutique hotel Chicland.

This urban beachside resort hotel in Da Nang boasts a minimalist interior wrapped in a carnival of greenery. Its balconies are shaded by a cascade of plants carefully selected to thrive in seaside conditions.

The local design dialect

Interestingly, the four-star Chicland insists it is not focused on luxury. While that may be true in the traditional sense—nothing gaudy or ostentatious here—the hotel is firmly situated in the higher echelons of comfort and sustainable interior design. Zen minimalism was employed to bring in tropical essence with bamboo, wood, basalt, and sandstone. The building itself, narrow and tall like a living tree, speaks a Japanese design language peppered with Vietnamese whispers of sea breezes and fluttering flowers. The clever combination of greenery and plants coupled with state-of-the-art construction techniques, adds up to an ambiance that is inherently calming and restorative.

Farm to sky bar

Built on the site of a seaside restaurant, Chicland’s bars and restaurants were designed to lift Vietnamese cuisine quite literally to a higher level. Rooted in Asian European culinary fusion, the best of local specialties are served with organic produce from the hotel's own farm and served on the rooftop. At the bistro, sophisticated and tranquil tea ceremonies are offered with the appropriate ambiance of rattan and lacquer. The menus stimulate both appetite and curiosity, with dishes like Da Nang Bouillabaisse, Vietnamese baguettes, and local street food served on tacos (for the adventurous, delicately presented Crispy Pork Ear is also an option).

The ‘barrier-free creativity' promised by the rooftop bar refers to a cocktail menu that won’t be nailed down on a map. Served poolside among greenery and views over Vietnam’s top beaches beyond, it’s hard to go wrong.
