Vietnam, Cambodia & Japan

Your journey around east Asia begins with Vietnam. One of the most iconic countries in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is a diverse country where you can enjoy a rich and varied itinerary. Many come for the food and history but leave charmed by the stunning natural landscape including lush farmland & pristine beaches. The people are also incredibly warm and welcoming. Combined with a visit to the iconic Temples of Angkor in Cambodia, you have the perfect introduction into the history and culture of Southeast Asia.

From there, head north to Japan, a destination like no other, where a vision of the future intermingles with traditions of the past. It's not uncommon to interact with a robot in a hotel lobby, before crossing the street and entering a 1,000 year old temple. While Tokyo & Kyoto will be the bedrock of any itinerary, we also recommend spending a couple of nights at a hot spring resort, where you can relax and experience the Japanese countryside.

Weather

Vietnam
Vietnam has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: wet and dry. The wet season is generally from April to October while the dry season runs from November to March. It is good to note that Vietnam's climate varies depending on the time of year and geographic location. Overall, while the weather isn't ideal in one area, it may be great in another. In Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, you can expect good weather with occasional rain and temperatures in the mid 60s to low 70s. In Hoi An, the weather will be quite pleasant with very little chance of rain and temperatures in mid 70s to low 80s.

Cambodia
Cambodia is a tropical country bathed in almost year-round sunshine with a high average temperature, so bring sun protection. There are two distinct seasons, dry and rainy. Between June and October it may rain every other afternoon but rarely in the morning. Dry season runs from November to April, with October to January being the coolest (relatively speaking!) time of year.

Japan
The weather tends to be mild with no extremes of anything including rain, heat, or cold. April is just before the rain starts kicking in full-swing in Japan as there is only May before we reach June, the true start of rainy season in Japan. While all-year round, sporadic bouts of rain is just a common occurrence in Japan, April in comparison tends to be fairly dry especially when considering both the latter months. April tends to bring partly cloudy days mixed with some clear days. Tokyo tends to be significantly cooler with highs in the mid 60s (°F) and lows in the high 40s (°F).

Aside from the weather, April is smack-dab in the middle of spring, bringing with it spring weather and all of the great spring time blooms. Not only is the weather great conditions for the blooming of cherry blossoms, but also many other types of beautiful and famous flower blooms as well.

💵
Tipping

Vietnam

During your time in Vietnam, gratuities can be reserved for your guide, driver, and hotel staff. It is acceptable to pay gratuities in USD.

  • Guides: USD 10 per person per day
  • Drivers: USD 5 per person per day.
  • Hotel Porters: USD 1 per bag transported.
  • Housekeepers and/or Butlers: USD 5 per day

Cambodia

Gratuities are not customary in Cambodian culture, so they are not necessarily expected in bars and restaurants. Gratuities are, however, very gratefully received. With the average Cambodian wage still very low, gratuities from tourists can make a real difference, so we do suggest to honor good service. It is acceptable to pay gratuities in USD.

For your trip, you can set aside gratuities for your guide, driver, and hotel staff. Again, it depends on your satisfaction with their good service.

  • Guides: USD 5 - 15 per person per day
  • Drivers: USD 3 - 5 per person per day.
  • Restaurants: Higher end restaurants will include service change usually while local restaurants will only expect a few dollars (10%).
  • Hotel Porters: USD 1 per bag transported.
  • Housekeepers and/or Butlers: USD 5 per day (Gratuities best left on an unmade bed, or for a butler given directly, at the end of your stay.)
  • Airport Baggage Handlers: USD 1 - 2
  • Spa Services: It is more common to give a gratuity here, especially in finer hotels. USD 10 to 20 a session is usual and given to their masseuse when dressed and departing.

Japan

In general, gratuities are not necessary in Japan. Guests do not have to tip restaurant staff, bellmen, taxi drivers, or housekeeping.

While not expected, guides and drivers will always appreciate a gratuity for their services. Amounts are not fixed, but any number beginning with 4 should be avoided for superstitious reasons (4 is pronounced the same as "death" in Japanese). Gratuities should be passed along in a plain, white envelope with no markings/ribbons on it. It is also proper to tip only in paper money and not with coins. It is preferred to tip in Japanese Yen, but U.S. Dollars work as well.

Generally speaking, something in the region of $25-$35 per day for a guide, and $15-$20 a day for a driver is sufficient.

Banh Mi 25

Perhaps one of the most famous sandwiches in the world is Banh Mi, or Banh My as it is spelled in Hanoi, and is not to be missed when you are in Vietnam.

This sandwich is a mix of French elements from Vietnam’s colonial past as well as delicious local ingredients.

Please note that we also have a lunch reservation scheduled at Luk Lak today at lunchtime. However, having a banh mi appetizer never hurts...

Recommendation for the day

Giang Cafe

Many people may not realize that Hanoi is famous for its egg coffee which may not sound very tasty but is actually delicious.

The coffee is similar in taste to something like eggnog and egg yolks are beaten with condensed milk until they are thick and fluffy; before adding the coffee.

Head to Giang Cafe, one of the best places in the city to try it!

Recommendation for the day

🍜
Pho Bat Dan

One of Vietnam’s best known dishes is Pho noodles, so you can’t leave Hanoi without sampling a bowl.

A well-known spot to sample the noodles in the city is located in the scenic Old Quarter of Hanoi.

Constructed over a period of 30 years during the reign of King Suryavarman II [AD1113], by some measures it is the largest religious complex in the world. Originally a Hindu mountain temple aligned to the spring equinox, around the 16th century it was converted to a Theravada Buddhist monument, a capacity in which it continues today.

Explore the well preserved central complex and detailed bas reliefs depicting scenes from Hindu mythologies and battles of the ancient empire. The beauty in balance and composition, combined with its sheer vast scale ensure Angkor Wat’s place as the crowning achievement in Khmer art and architecture. You will finish touring in the early afternoon at which time your guide will leave you with your driver so you can explore and shop in Hoi An until your dinner reservation.

Tokyo

One of the world’s most cutting-edge capitals, Tokyo is a city of contrasts. Famous for its sprawling neon-lit landscape it is also home to expansive parkland, peaceful shrines and temples, and lovingly tended gardens. On the surface, Tokyo is a mix of digital trends and conspicuous consumption, but dig deeper and you will find a city rooted deeply in the traditional culture. Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples stand close to skyscrapers as a reminder of a more contemplative time.

Your Stay: Mandarin Oriental Tokyo

Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo’s visionary design and award-winning service have been recognized as the epitome of sophisticated luxury in the city. Perfectly situated in Tokyo's prestigious financial district, the first Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in Japan combines contemporary and time-honoured architectural splendour. Namidabashi Oshimaya Lantern Shop

The Namidabashi Oshimaya Lantern Shop, established in 1913, is a well-known lantern shop that has been making Edo-style hand-painted lanterns for over a century.

Edo-style hand-painted lanterns are a traditional handcraft of Tokyo with characters and family crests from the Edo Period hand painted on the main part of the lantern. The characters are clearly and boldly so that they are easily legible from a distance.

The shop also hand paints oil-paper umbrellas, as well as props for Kabuki performances.

This is a suggestion for your afternoon at leisure.

⛩️
Meiji Shrine

Meiji Shrine was built nearly 100 years ago to commemorate Emperor Meiji’s contribution to modern Japan. The shrine is entirely surrounded by a forest, with an area of 70 hectares of land and over 120,000 trees, all of which were donated to the shrine from different parts of Japan.

Although rather young compared with other shrines, Meiji shrine has its own dramatic story to tell. While the original construction of the shrine was completed in 1926, the shrine was destroyed during the bombings of World War II and rebuilt in 1958.

If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a couple on their wedding day, making their way through the shrine’s grounds on their way to their ceremony.

This is a suggestion for your afternoon at leisure.

🐟
Toyosu Market and Tsukiji Market

Every day, from Monday to Saturday, Toyosu Fish Market opens up to the general public after the early morning auction. This is an excellent chance to discover some of the world’s best seafood and see this famous market in action.

While the inner market of Tsukiji has many shops that sell business to business, the outer market in Tsukiji is a wonderful chance to sample a wide variety of some of Japan's finest seafood and various fresh, hot snacks.

Your tour today will take you to the outer market to experience some of Tsukiji’s best eating (and drinking). We recommend the yaki-tamago - a sweet, custard like scrambled egg pan fried in layers and served fresh out of the pan.

Note: Food is included in your outer market tour!

🍣

After your time at Tsukiji Market, experience a private sushi class at a sushi restaurant. A master chef will show you how to slice sashimi and make nigiri. With detailed instruction, you will make your own nigiri for lunch, using fresh ingredients from the market.

The ‘Sky Edge’, a corner where you can look down at the cityscape below without any obstructions and is a particularly good photo spot that provides a panoramic view of the city.

In addition to the breathtaking views, the rooftop also features hammocks for cloud watching and an observation compass to help you identify major landmarks in the distance such as Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Stadium and even Mt Fuji (on a clear day). At night, you'll be able to see a light show called the 'Crossing Light' as 18 beams illuminate the city sky.

Time: Afternoon

If time allows, you will continue on with your guide to the Harajuku and Omotesando districts.

🛍️
Harajuku & Omotesando

Harajuku’s Takeshita Street - This narrow, crowded street is lined with shops that sell the latest fashion trends, sweets, and other interesting items. It is in this area that some of the outrageous fashion that Japan is known for originates.

As the trendy streets of Harajuku end, the amazing architecture of Omotesando begins. With seemingly endless modern, cutting-edge architecture, great shopping, and delicious restaurants, Omotesando is Tokyo’s Champs-Elysées Boulevard. Many of the buildings along this street were designed by Pritzker Prize winning architects such as Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa.

⚔️
Katana Shopping

To end the day, your guide will take you to a few katana shops around Ginza where you can learn about the crafting of these old samurai weapons and purchase some to send home.

Application documents will be required when you buy a Japanese sword and send it home. It typically takes a month or a bit longer. Taibundo or Seikodo can support this procedure.

Luggage Delivery Service

As there is no designated space for large suitcases on the bullet train, we would like to recommend a luggage delivery service. If you drop off your luggage at your hotel in Tokyo, you will receive it at your hotel in Kanazawa by the next day. Your guide & hotel staff will be happy to consult on this matter.

Luggage larger than 160 cm in total dimensions cannot be brought into the bullet train due to the train's policies.

On the bullet and express trains, luggage with total dimensions of no more than 160 cm/62 inch (30 x 50 x 80 cm/ 11.8 x 19.6 x 31.4 inch) can be brought into the train and stored overhead, as the depth of bullet train luggage racks is approximately 42 cm/ 6.5 inch. In general, luggage of 120 cm/ 47 inch total dimensions (25 x 40 x 55 cm / 9.8 x 15.7 x 21.6 inch) or less can be stored at your feet, although you might feel uncomfortable because it is not so spacious around your feet.

Your seats do not have an oversized baggage area/an oversized baggage compartment. There are no porters at the stations, and it may feel difficult to move through the stations with your luggage. We highly recommend the luggage delivery service as suggested above.

Kanazawa

During the Edo Period, Kanazawa served as the seat of a powerful feudal clan, second only to the Tokugawa in terms of rice production and fief size. Accordingly, Kanazawa grew to become a town of great cultural achievements. During World War II, Kanazawa was Japan's second-largest city (after Kyoto) to escape destruction by air raids. Consequently, parts of the old castle town, such as the Nagamachi samurai district and chaya entertainment districts, have survived in good condition.

Kenrokuen Garden
Kenrokuen Garden
🏯
Kenroku Garden & Kanazawa Castle

The history of Kenroku Garden dates back to 1676 when a prominent figure began constructing a garden around their villa. For almost 200 years, the garden was private, until 1871 when the garden was first made available to the public.

Kenrokuen Garden is a beautiful traditional Japanese garden. It is one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan and is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, seasonal beauty, and historic architecture. The garden features a central pond, winding paths, and a variety of trees and flowers that change with the seasons, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike. Your introduction to Kanazawa will continue with a tour of Kanazawa Castle.

Kanazawa Castle, which is most commonly associated with a powerful feudal lord, was first built in the 16th century. Although it has suffered many devastating fires throughout history, an accurate reconstruction of castle grounds gives visitors a glimpse of what was once the seat of power for this region of Japan.

Higashichayagai District
Higashichayagai District
🏮
Higashichayagai

Perhaps the most photogenic area in all of Kanazawa, Higashichayagai is an old style street lined with tea houses (higashi means "eastern", chaya means "tea houses", and gai means "neighborhood"). While some of these tea houses are now residences, many of them have been repurposed as boutique shops. The area offers an abundance of unique tasting opportunities and arts and crafts.

For a less crowded stroll, we recommend moving across the street to Kazue-machi. While the area doesn't offer as many options for eating and shopping, it does allow you to enjoy the unique architecture and street design at a more leisurely pace.

⚔️
Nomura-ke, Samurai Residence

One of the main attractions of the district is the centrally located samurai residence, a restored samurai residence displaying the lifestyle and artifacts of the time when samurai were prosperous. A high ranked samurai family, like many other samurai, went broke when Japan's feudal era came to an end with the Meiji Period. The displays of items are changed several times a year.

You will be transferred back to the hotel in the late afternoon at the end of your silk dyeing experience to relax and freshen up before dinner.

⛩️
Natadera Temple

In ancient Japan, nature worship was common among people as they were very dependent on natural forces for healthy and productive crops and their day to day safety.

Located near one of Japan's three most sacred mountains, Mount Haku, is Natadera - a temple carved into the hillsides. The caves of Natadera symbolize a mothers womb – passing through them is a cleansing “rebirth”.

A great monk who lived over 1300 years ago, first climbed Mt Haku in the year 717. Upon his descent from the mountain, and exploring the local area, he established Natadera.

In its beginnings, Natadera, which was at that time called Iwaya Temple, was a rather humble temple. However, when the Emperor Kazan stayed in this area around the year 1000 AD, he fully supported its development and construction, allowing it to develop into its unique structure we see today.

Unfortunately, the temple was destroyed in subsequent wars, until it was rebuilt by a clan in the mid 1600s. The current reconstruction is historically accurate and its gardens and backwoods offer meditative strolling opportunities.

🏺
Kutaniyaki Kiln Museum

Round out the day with a visit to Kutaniyaki Kiln Museum. This is the site of a historic kiln that has been used ever since production of Kutani porcelain was restarted in the late Edo period in 1824. To pass this cultural legacy on to future generations, the kiln site was turned into a museum in 2002. In addition to displaying the remains of a climbing kiln that was used for over a century, the museum also features a new climbing kiln built to replace it and the former home of the kiln master, which is still used as a pottery workshop today.

After your visit to the Kiln Museum, you will continue onwards to your ryokan for the evening, arriving in the late afternoon.

Kyoto

Kyoto is the nation’s former capital and was the residence of the emperor from 794 until 1868. With 2,000 religious buildings, including 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, as well as palaces, gardens, and associated architecture, it is one of the best-preserved cities in Japan and has 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Kyoto represents the “Japan of old” and beyond the high-rise skyscrapers built as a monument to progress, the real monument to Japan’s historical and cultural past can be found in the city’s narrow alleyways where tea houses abound and kimono-clad geisha hurry around.

Kiyomizu-Dera

Kiyomizu Temple is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall, 13 meters above the hillside. The stage affords nice views of the numerous cherry and maple trees below that erupt in a sea of color in spring and fall, as well as of the city of Kyoto in the distance. The main hall, which together with the stage was built without the use of nails, houses the temple's primary object of worship, a small statue of the eleven faced, thousand armed Kannon.

🌼
Kinkakuji

Kinkakuji, or the Golden Pavilion, is one of Japan’s iconic sites. The temple grounds first began as a small villa in 1224 and was converted to a Zen temple shortly after. Like so many other historical landmarks in Japan, the temple has unfortunately suffered destruction from fires in its history. The building, as it stands today, is a historically accurate reconstruction of the temple before it burned down from arson in 1950.

🎍
The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

The bamboo forest offers paths for walking or biking. It is a must see for those visiting Arashiyama. The bamboo grown here has been used for centuries for creating crafts, such as tea whisks, sake cups, baskets and many others. Experience a fun half-hour rickshaw ride through the bamboo grove.

Time: Late morning

🎏
Tenryuji

With a history dating back nearly 700 years, Tenryuji is one of Arashiyama's most visited sites, and for good reason. While the building complex has suffered from fire damage throughout history (like much of Japan), the stunning gardens remain in their scenset form. As you stroll through the garden, both from within the temple and on the garden paths, you'll move from the pond, which symbolizes a large lake, up the mountain and into the forest (where multiple cherry trees can be found).

🍵
Private Japanese Tea Ceremony

The Japanese tea ceremony, also known as Chanoyu or Sado, is a traditional cultural ritual that dates back centuries. It is a ceremonial way of preparing and serving tea to guests, embodying the principles of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. The ceremony is typically conducted in a serene and meditative setting, with the host preparing and serving the tea with grace and precision, using specialized utensils and techniques.

The guests observe and appreciate the aesthetics of the surroundings, including the architecture, the tea utensils, and the flower arrangement. The ceremony is a deeply spiritual experience, evoking a sense of calm and mindfulness, and is considered an important cultural tradition in Japan, reflecting the country's philosophy of finding beauty and meaning in everyday life.

The alley is a mix of dining opportunities ranging from inexpensive noodle and yakitori shops to high-end traditional and modern Kyoto cuisine. The shops line both sides of the alley.

You will be brought back to your hotel in the late afternoon so you can relax before dinner this evening.
