Hawaii

The island of Hawaii is the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian chain. Nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined (hence, its nickname, “Big Island”), its sheer size is awe-inspiring. You can travel through all but four of the world's different climate zones here, ranging from Wet Tropical to Polar Tundra, a result of the shielding effect and elevations of the massive volcanoes Maunakea and Maunaloa. From the many geological features at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to the snow-capped heights of Maunakea; from the lush valleys of the Hilo and Hamakua Coasts to the jet-black sands of Punaluu Beach, the island of Hawaii is an unrivaled expression of the power of nature.

Today, let's say hello to Hawaii and Japan!

You'll arrive in Japan the following day.

This is the perfect opportunity to download and watch some iconic Japanese films before you land!

🍿
Movies to watch

Japan has one of the oldest film industries in the world, gaining international attention in the 1950s, and gaining cultural status in the 1980s through to the early 2000s.

Some of our recommended films to watch are:

  • Tokyo Story, one of Japanese Cinema's most acclaimed films, revolving around the story of family, growing up and ageing parents - trailer here.
  • Strawberry Shortcakes follows four distinctly unique women as they embark on a quest for love and purpose amidst the lively hustle and bustle of downtown Tokyo. - more information here.
  • Battle Royale stirred controversy upon release but has since become regarded as one of the best Japanese films of the 2000s, and is one of director Quentin Tarantino’s favorite movies; inspiring the Hunger Games franchise - trailer here.
  • Adrift in Tokyo is filled with Japanese humour, plenty of cultural references and gentle moments; an enchanting examination of modern Japan through the streets of Tokyo - trailer here.
  • All About Lily Chou-Chou is a poignant coming-of-age story, following two boys as they grapple with the challenges of adolescence. The film sheds light on Japan's pop culture, embodied by cyber pop idol Lily Chou-Chou. It's a disquieting and perceptive portrayal of modern pressures on young people in contemporary Japan - trailer here.
  • Tokyo Idols delves into the cultural phenomenon of Japanese female J-pop singers. After its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, "Tokyo Idols" received acclaim for offering valuable insights into Japanese music culture among the younger generation - trailer here.

Tokyo

One of the world’s most cutting-edge capitals, Tokyo is a city of contrasts. Famous for its sprawling neon-lit landscape it is also home to expansive parkland, peaceful shrines and temples, and lovingly tended gardens. On the surface, Tokyo is a mix of digital trends and conspicuous consumption, but dig deeper and you will find a city rooted deeply in the traditional culture. Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples stand close to skyscrapers as a reminder of a more contemplative time.

Tokyo Street Food

Depending on your energy levels this evening, it may be a good night for some self-guided discovery of Tokyo's street food scenset in Shinjuku.

We recommend starting your walk in Omoide Yokocho, a charming area near Shinjuku Station, the busiest train station in the world. Originally a black market in the 1940s, Omoide Yokocho is now a tiny alley packed with local restaurants and bars. Feel Tokyo’s post-WWII nostalgia while eating and drinking your way though popular Izakaya’s (Japanese gastropubs).

Afterwards, head to Golden Gai, a collection of 6 tiny alleys packed with over 200 bars.

Transfer back to your hotel independently.

  • Getting there and back: You will need to transfer to Shinjuku by public transportation (train or metro) or by taxi which can be set up with the hotel front desk.

Every day, from Monday to Saturday, Toyosu Fish Market opens up to the general public after the early morning auction. This is an excellent chance to discover some of the world’s best seafood and see this famous market in action.

While the inner market of Tsukiji has many shops that sell business to business, the outer market in Tsukiji is a wonderful chance to to sample a wide variety of some of Japan's finest seafood and various fresh, hot snacks.

⛩️
Meiji Shrine

Meiji Shrine was built nearly 100 years ago to commemorate Emperor Meiji’s contribution to modern Japan. The shrine is entirely surrounded by a forest, with an area of 70 hectares of land and over 120,000 trees, all of which were donated to the shrine from different parts of Japan.

Although rather young compared with other shrines, Meiji shrine has its own dramatic story to tell. While the original construction of the shrine was completed in 1926, the shrine was destroyed during the bombings of World War II and rebuilt in 1958.

If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a couple on their wedding day, making their way through the shrine’s grounds on their way to their ceremony.

🛍️
Harajuku & Omotesando

Harajuku’s Takeshita Street - This narrow, crowded street is lined with shops that sell the latest fashion trends, sweets, and other interesting items. It is in this area that some of the outrageous fashion that Japan is known for originates.

As the trendy streets of Harajuku end, the amazing architecture of Omotesando begins. With seemingly endless modern, cutting-edge architecture, great shopping, and delicious restaurants, Omotesando is Tokyo’s Champs-Elysées Boulevard. Many of the buildings along this street were designed by Pritzker Prize winning architects such as Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa.

🚦
Shibuya Crossing

In Shibuya, one can witness (and experience) the world's busiest intersection, as well as one of Japan's most endearing symbols of loyalty - the statue of a dog known for its loyalty.

The scramble crossing is located in the heart of Shibuya's shopping district. Due to its proximity with many popular stores, Shibuya Station, and the location of countless delicious eating spots, the intersection regularly sees thousands of people cross each time the traffic lights turn red and the pedestrian lights turn green.

Also located in Shibuya is the bronze statue of the loyal dog. The dog was well known for its loyalty in waiting for its owner for nearly 10 years, arriving at the station daily in anticipation of its owner's return from work.

Soon after, a statue was erected in its honor. Unfortunately the statue was melted down during World War II, but the current replica was commissioned shortly after.

Kiyomizu-Dera

Kiyomizu Temple is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall, 13 meters above the hillside. The stage affords nice views of the numerous cherry and maple trees below that erupt in a sea of color in spring and fall, as well as of the city of Kyoto in the distance. The main hall, which together with the stage was built without the use of nails, houses the temple's primary object of worship, a small statue of the eleven faced, thousand armed Kannon.

⛩️
Sanjusangendo Temple

Sanjusangendo is a historic Buddhist temple located in Kyoto, Japan. The temple is famous for its impressive main hall, which features 1,001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. The hall is the longest wooden structure in Japan and dates back to the 12th century.

Visitors to Sanjusangendo can marvel at the intricate details of the temple's architecture and the beauty of the Kannon statues, which are said to represent the many faces of mercy. The temple also features a beautiful garden and several smaller shrines and halls that offer a peaceful and serene atmosphere for meditation and contemplation.

🌼
Kinkakuji

Kinkakuji, or the Golden Pavilion, is one of Japan’s iconic sites. The temple grounds first began as a small villa in 1224 and was converted to a Zen temple shortly after. Like so many other historical landmarks in Japan, the temple has unfortunately suffered destruction from fires in its history. The building, as it stands today, is a historically accurate reconstruction of the temple before it burned down from arson in 1950.

🎍
The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

The bamboo forest offers paths for walking or biking. It is a must-see for those visiting Arashiyama. The bamboo grown here has been used for centuries for creating crafts, such as tea whisks, sake cups, baskets, and many others. Experience a fun rickshaw ride through the bamboo grove for around half an hour.

🎏
Tenryuji

With a history dating back nearly 700 years, Tenryuji is one of Arashiyama's most visited sites, and for good reason. While the building complex has suffered from fire damage throughout history (like much of Japan), the stunning gardens remain in their original form. As you stroll through the garden, both from within the temple and on the garden paths, you'll move from the pond, which symbolizes a large lake, up the mountain and into the forest (where multiple cherry trees can be found).

🍜
Pontocho Alley

Pontocho is possibly the city's most atmospheric dining locale. It is a thin, slightly crooked lane that runs one block west of Kamogawa River. The alley is a mix of dining opportunities ranging from inexpensive noodle and yakitori shops to high-end traditional and modern Kyoto cuisine. The shops line both sides of the alley.

You will be brought back to your hotel in the late afternoon so you can relax before dinner this evening.

Osaka

The historical commercial capital of Japan, Osaka is Japan’s third largest metropolis and it has been the economic powerhouse of the Kansai region for centuries. Osaka first gained prominence when a powerful warlord built the country’s most magnificent castle in the 16th century. To develop resources for his castle town, the ruler persuaded merchants from other parts of the nation to resettle in Osaka and it became an important distribution center. As the merchant class prospered, the town grew and traditional arts such as kabuki and bunraku flourished. With the legacy of the city’s commercial beginnings still intact, Osaka is renowned as a hub for international business. It is also famous for its local cuisine, large aquarium, underground shopping arcade, and its popular Universal Studios amusement park.

💙
Okinawa Peace Memorial Park

The Okinawa Peace Memorial Park, situated on Mabuni Hill, the scenset where the Battle of Okinawa ended, was created to mourn the loss of close to a quarter of a million people. A 12-meter-high lacquer Buddha, a symbol of peace, can be seen in the Okinawa Peace Hall, as can an art museum and a series of pictures titled "War and Peace.”

One of the key features of the park is the Cornerstone of Peace inscribed with the names of some 200,000 individuals, including civilians and Japanese and foreign soldiers, who lost their lives in the Battle of Okinawa. The concept of the stone monuments is to remember those who died and to pray for them, to share lessons learned from war and to provide a place for meditation and learning. The vast park is also home to the Peace Memorial Museum, which exhibits testimonials of survivors of the war, a meditation forest and a peace bell.

🕋
Okinawa Fallen Heroes Memorial Wall

The Cornerstone of Peace, is a unique memorial complex, dedicated in 1995, that commemorates the sacrifices of all who participated in the Battle of Okinawa, regardless of which side they were on. It is situated on the basin beneath Mabuni Hill where the commanders of the Japanese forces had their final headquarters and where, therefore, the last stage of organized battle took place. The central component of the memorial complex is an expansive installation of concentrically placed, zig-zagging black granite walls engraved with the names of all Japanese, American, British, Korean and Taiwanese soldiers who died as well as the names of all Okinawans, civilian and military, who died throughout the Pacific War. Modeled after the Vietnam War memorial in Washington, D.C., the memorial materially represents the enormous cost of life of the battle while also methodically inscribing the name of each individual who died in order make the site a place of personal mourning.

🕳️
Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters

This site is where the Japanese Navy, led by a Rear Admiral, fought a desperate battle defending the island during the Battle of Okinawa. As his defense collapsed, he sent a telegraph to the vice minister of the navy in which he said that the Okinawan people did their very best in the battle.

In 1970, the Okinawans opened the underground facility to the public hoping that future generations would see the futility of war and instead pursue world peace.

🏥
Himeyuri Peace Museum

During the last days of the Battle of Okinawa, a group of young women and teachers at two schools were ordered by the Japanese Army to join a medical unit. The women died in a cave along with Japanese soldiers rather than surrender. A monument was constructed here in memory of the young women and teachers who lost their lives. The museum consists of five exhibit rooms displaying photos from the Battle of Okinawa, portraits of the victims and books of testimonials by survivors.

The “Lion City” is filled with delightful culinary experiences, cutting-edge fashion trends, unique artwork, state-of-the-art accommodations and exciting nightlife.

💱
Tipping guide

The Singaporean government does not encourage tipping, and tips are therefore not expected, unlike in other countries.

However, you will see additional charges on your bill in certain cases; major shops charge a 7% GST (Goods and Services Tax), some restaurants automatically add a 10% gratuity, and a 1% government tax charge is added where applicable, such as on hotel bills.

  • When eating at a restaurant, check the bottom of the bill to see if a service or gratuity has already been added to the final total. The credit slips will have a line to add a tip, so be sure to double-check your receipt and not the credit card slip to see if the service charge was added
  • Most services do not require a tip. However, if you feel that a tip is warranted, e.g. for massage therapists, long taxi rides, or exceptional service, feel free to leave one at your discretion.
  • We recommend tipping your guide and your driver, which should be given in an envelope at the conclusion of your trip

The UAE is a wonderful country, full of cultural wonders and warm people to meet. Despite being a global hub for business, leisure and medical tourism, it is polite to adhere to and show respect for local customs:

  • Swimwear is permissible at beaches, waterparks, public pools and spa areas but is not considered appropriate in areas such as business districts and shopping malls.
  • Dressing conservatively is appreciated in historic neighbourhoods or when in culturally important places.
  • Modest dress is particularly important when visiting mosques, synagogues, and churches. Ladies should wear loose-fitting, non-see-through clothes and shoulders should be covered.

You may bring in prescribed medicines for personal use in normal quantities. Many pharmacies in the UAE carry most prescriptions you might need. Click here for more information.
  • Public displays of affection are best kept to a minimum. Holding hands is acceptable, but kissing and hugging in public areas is not permitted.

The luxurious furnishings come from the north of Portugal, recreating the styles of King D. João V and Queen D. Maria I, with Art Deco, colonial, Algarvian and neocassic flourishes. Of the three distinct sections, the Palace Wing offers the most traditionally Portuguese interiors, while the Garden Wing and Villas have a more contemporary feel. Tipping guide

The Dutch do not have a tipping culture as strongly-ingrained as much of the English-speaking world.

  • In a bar, restaurant, or private boat tour in Amsterdam, provided the service was good, a tip of around 10% is appreciated but not automatically expected.
