A stone’s throw from Big Ben and the West End, Leicester Square is a busy crossroads that eventually calls on all of London’s local and visiting urbanites to pass through. And now, you can keep your eye out for the glint of royal blue shining off of the square’s newest attraction: the Londoner Hotel.

Minting its title as the world’s first “super-boutique” the hotel pulls off a kind of magic trick. Below the ceramic tile work created by the artist Ian Munroe, the Londoner’s entrance is subtle and marked by a waving Union Jack and a sharply-dressed doorman. At first, the art-filled lobby seems like a standard size, but take a few steps in deeper and you’ll realize the hotel is far bigger than it appears.

The alluring lobby pulls you in towards the bar and lounge which feels even more intimate with its mood lighting reflected in the ceiling mirror, but only guests of this hotel are allowed to step up onto the stage at the back and take the hidden staircase up The Residence. You’ll need a room key to enjoy this space (where snacks and drinks are complimentary), but that’s what makes it so special.

The Residence consists of three distinct spaces: a long marble bar, a sultry private meeting spot dressed in red velvet trimmings, and a separate game room that is spacious enough for families looking for some entertainment. Just beyond the bathroom, a speakeasy-like bar is hidden away so well that most guests are likely to miss it. The intimate Whiskey Room is an extremely private and quiet bar that displays the hotel’s collection of prized bottles including a pre-war Macallan.

Underground luxury

Designed with approximately 25 distinct spaces, in addition to the 350 luxuriously-appointed guest rooms, the Londoner also boasts a spa and pool area with a steam room and sauna, a high-tech fitness room with smart progress-tracking machines, an incredibly large conference space, and a screening room that is used for movie premieres and award shows. According to Hotel Director Charles Oak, over half the building is below ground, which is the secret to the Londoner’s design.

“On a weekend, we have easily 2,000 people in this building but the clever part of the building is you can be in parts of it, and you would think you’re in a smaller boutique hotel,” says Oak. “Because the building was so big, that drove us to find ways of finding a design and an operating model that gives us both.” In the busy center of London, the hotel offers its guests a rare opportunity to find impeccably-designed private areas where they can have a few moments to themselves.

With upscale rooms and Trafalgar Square views, The Londoner is a splurge hotel worthy of celebrating a special occasion or simply treating yourself to the best the city has to offer. And because of its unique design, you can enjoy the amenities of a large resort with the love of detail that is at the heart of every boutique hotel, supersized or not.
