Thailand, widely considered as the gateway of Southeast Asia. Cosmopolitan Bangkok is where most journeys begin, but head north to savor the country’s culinary center or south to islands that can only be described as ethereal. Regardless of where you visit, visitors never fail to be dazzled by Thailand’s masterpiece temples, fragrant cuisine, vibrant nightlife, and sprawling outdoor markets.
January welcomes travelers to explore the diverse wonders of Southeast Asia, with Thailand offering unique and captivating experiences. The country boasts vibrant cultural attractions, bustling street food markets, and optimal weather for exploration. Meanwhile, the southern gem, Phuket, invites visitors to enjoy warm temperatures, pristine beaches, and breathtaking limestone formations.

Dec 27 – 30, 2024 Chiang Mai: (3 nights)

In December/January, Thailand enjoys one of its coolest and driest months, offering visitors comfortable temperatures that average between 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F) across the country. This period falls within the peak tourist season, largely due to the optimal weather conditions for exploring Thailand's stunning beaches, vibrant cities, and lush countryside. The minimal rainfall and lower humidity levels during January make it an ideal time for outdoor activities, sightseeing, and experiencing the country's famous festivals and cultural events, solidifying Thailand as a prime destination for travelers seeking adventure and cultural immersion.
Comfortable and lightweight clothing is preferable in Southeast Asia. For temples, long pants/skirts are required for women and shirts that cover at least the shoulders. Long pants for men.
Footwear for days out should be comfortable runners, or sport sandals (sandals must have a strap around the heel if entering royal venues like Bangkok’s Grand Palace). It is also recommended to bring a casual evening outfit and comfortable shoes that you could wear to a chic cocktail lounge, but also walk a few blocks in as well. Things like hats and sunglasses are helpful on sunny days.
The far north of Thailand can get cool at night from November to January. Occasionally it drops to single digits Celsius so a good sweater or fleece and even gloves may be useful. You’ll also want to bring swimwear/athletic wear.
Thais are very easy going and would rarely tell you if you are doing something that offends them. However, here are a few
things to think about while you are in the Kingdom:
• Never touch adults on the head. Thais consider heads the spiritual apex of the body.
• Thais consider feet to be the spiritual low point of the body. Do not put them up on chairs, ledges; use them to point,
etc.
• Do not blow your nose while eating. It is best to get up and step away from the table.
• In busy centers, keep your shirt on (unless on the beach of course).
• Refrain from speaking publicly about the Royal Family of Thailand out of sheer respect.
• Women must never come in physical contact with a monk.
• Smile early and smile often - it opens many doors
U.S. citizens traveling to Thailand for tourism purposes can enter the country without a visa for stays of up to 30 days.

At first glance, Bangkok seems like a city of mismatches. Modern skyscrapers loom over centuries-old temples and street vendors serve up spicy noodles across from Michelin-star restaurants, but it’s exactly these incongruencies that give Bangkok its universal appeal, luring everyone from student backpackers to elite travelers. Once you’ve acclimated to the heat—both in the air and on your plate—you won’t be able to get enough of the city’s piquant energy.

This morning, you’ll be met at your hotel by your expert local guide, ready to head out and get your first taste of Thailand. Our first stop is the Grand Palace, a majestic complex that served as the residence of the Kings of Thailand for over two centuries. Marvel at the intricate design and craftsmanship of the buildings, walls, and gardens, the intricately detailed murals, and learn about the history and significance of this impressive landmark.
Next, we’ll hop on a tuk-tuk for a short, but exciting ride to Wat Pho, one of the oldest and largest temples in Bangkok. Famous for its reclining Buddha statue, Wat Pho is also home to numerous other Buddha images, impressive architecture, and beautiful murals. Take your time to explore the temple grounds and soak in the peaceful atmosphere.
After we have finished exploring Wat Pho, we’ll make a short journey over to Wat Prayun, a lesser-known but equally impressive temple complex, built during the reign of King Rama III in the 19th-century, which boasts a unique stupa design and serene atmosphere.
The temple is located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, offering stunning views across the water and surrounding areas. Following this, we’ll take a quick break from sightseeing to enjoy a delicious Thai lunch at a local restaurant.
Next, it’s time to try a different mode of transport as we take a short longtail boat ride through the khlongs (canals) of Bangkok. This is a great way to experience the local way of life, see traditional wooden houses and local shops, and escape the hustle and bustle
of the city for a while.
Our final stop will be the Mahanakorn Tower, one of Bangkok’s tallest skyscrapers. More intrepid travellers may wish to step out on the glass-floored observation deck and skywalk located on the 74th floor. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the city and take in the stunning sunset scenery.
This day out in Bangkok offers a perfect mix of history, culture, relaxation, and adventure and is a great way to experience the best of Bangkok in a day.

Enjoy a day of leisure in Bangkok exploring Khao San Road or other attractions that have grabbed your attention so far!
Hop into one of Thailand’s most iconic modes of transport, the Tuk Tuk, and ride through some of Bangkok’s coolest, and tastiest, neighbourhoods. We’ll kick off with a departure from your hotel by private Tuk Tuk in the late afternoon. Whip through the streets of Bangkok on the
way to sample a few popular local dishes and street side snacks.
The first stop will be Bangrak, a trendy district just a short distance from the Chao Phraya River. Spend some time exploring the Bangrak Bazaar and the surrounding streets as your guide introduces you to some more tasty treats. Chinatown is the next stop on the list, a chaotic community that is well known for its delicious street-side food stalls. The first stop here will be exploring Chinatown’s Yaowarat Road, a highlight of the city famed for the spectacular array of street food hawkers.
Finally, we’ll diverge onto Chinatown’s Soi Nana and Maitri Chit Road, home to an eclectic mix of cafes and hip bars. We’ll explore some more unique flavours and street food treats throughout Chinatown before ending the journey with a couple of options.
Families with children may prefer to go and sample some delicious dessert stalls offering freshly made soy milk and sweet dumplings, while adult groups may wish to pay a visit to a trendy bar. This bar offers a trendy hangout paying homage to all things Thai. They have Thai xylophones and cymbals, Thai tapas and cocktails with names
borne from ancient Thai lore. Dine on tapas which is served a-la-carte – we recommend the moo sarong (pork balls wrapped in yellow noodle and fried) and the Khao Kriab wow (rice cracker served with chilli paste). For friskier travellers, try a shot of Ya Dong (Thai moonshine infused with herbs).
The trip will end around 9 pm, but you have the option to hang around. Should you choose to stay later, your guide can give you advice and directions on how to return to the hotel.
Please Note: The above routing is subject to change. We can tailor the routing based on your interests and particular preferences.

The multicolor descriptions of Chiang Rai’s top sights—White Temple, Emerald Buddha, Black House, Blue Temple—are an indication that it’s one of Thailand’s most eye-catching cities (the surrounding mountains don’t hurt, either). But walk around the outdoor markets and taste and smell become the main sensory pleasures. It won’t take long to train your nose to lead you to the stall with the best khao soi, a North Thai specialty.

Set off from your Chiang Rai hotel and journey to the historical Doi Mae Salong, where tales of the 93rd Division of the Kuomintang soldiers unfold amidst the community’s vibrant life. Your exploration begins with a tribute at the Memorial of Heroes, a solemn space honouring the Chinese soldiers’ contributions and sacrifices.
With your local guide, delve into the museum’s exhibits, offering insights into the soldiers’ odyssey and the impact of their presence in Thailand. Next, embrace the natural beauty of Doi Mae Salong with a low-intensity four kilometre trek. The path weaves through local orchards and plantations, where avocados, cherries, coffee, guava, and tea grow in abundance. As you traverse this terrain, the guide may fashion trekking sticks from bamboo, aiding your journey. Witness the villagers’ harmonious lifestyle and their agricultural practices that have paved the way for a prosperous community.

Within a country that’s known for its culture and cuisine, Chiang Mai makes a strong case for the top spot in both areas. A defensive moat still encircles the Old City, along with the countless temples, restaurants, and markets squeezed inside of it. Venture outside of the city limits and Chiang Mai is surrounded by national parks on nearly every side, along with plenty of mountaintop temples and elephant sanctuaries to visit.
Thailand is known as the land of smiles for good reason as the locals have a well-earned reputation for their warm and welcoming hospitality. Experience this first hand by visiting a family home to the south of Chiang Mai’s old city in the district of Hang Dong.
We’ll visit a traditional Lanna family residence; this home has been a part of their heritage for more than 150 years. Their house and rice barn are typical examples of the northern Thai style. As friendly, knowledgeable, and charismatic hosts, they’ll welcome guests into their life and invite any questions you may have, so embrace this opportunity to learn about the Lanna way of life.
The main activity for the day is a cooking extravaganza. We’ll explore the local plot to select ingredients for the feast – the family lives a farm-to-table existence with almost all they need on-site, including fresh herbs and spices and various fruits including mangoes and bananas. They’ll explain the different growing and farming processes for each plant.
Then, it’s on to the culinary masterclass as we create local northern Thai dishes from secret homemade recipes. Guests really benefit from this local expertise to get a real insight into Thai northern cuisine, a far cry from other overly commercialised classes. The host, however, is aware of foreign tastes, and can scale down the spice level accordingly!
The highlight, of course, is sitting down to enjoy the home-cooked feast as newfound friends. Leave the hosts with new culinary skills and hopefully a valuable insight into the local Lanna way of life.

A “live lecture” on elephant conservation and behaviour will enhance your understanding.

Head to the riverside sala and learn about enrichment activities. Help fill feeding tubes with corn, sugar cane, grass, and bananas, then witness the elephants enjoy their treats while taking in the scenic view from the observation deck.
Afterwards, you will savour a delicious Thai vegetarian lunch and learn about the community’s history and traditional weaving techniques at the Karen Cultural Centre. Try your hand at weaving and support the local artisans by purchasing handmade items if you wish.
You will also pay a visit to a traditional herb garden to learn about medicinal plants for elephants and humans. Collect various herbs and gain insights into their healing properties. Engage in an Elephant Cooking Class at the riverside sala. Prepare supplements for the elephants while learning about their health, diet, and the benefits of each ingredient.
