Bikes, Boats, Villages & Caves

You leave Chiang Mai behind today and head 3 hours north to the mountains of Chiang Rai. Checking out of the hotel, you take the winding road up to the mountains where you are checked in and your bags are taken to your room; then, you head right out on an adventure.

Get ready for a full day exploring a large swath of what the scenic countryside surrounding Chiang Rai has to offer. And you’ll do it in the best way you know how: on bicycles with the breeze in your faces! The day will begin with a trip to a cave temple, Wat Tham Phra. You'll spend some time exploring this vernacular temple, get used to your bicycles, and then take off to pedal along the Kok River, through fertile farmland, creaking bamboo stands, and to a hill tribe village surrounded by limestone mountains.

Here you will have a local lunch, and then carry on through small back roads leading out of the village, up and over some medium-grade mountains, passing by further settlements. When you’ve had enough biking, you’ll board a private longtail boat waiting for you on the river and head back down the river to Chiang Rai town. Sit back, relax, and take in the scenset unfolding along the shores as you reflect on this epic day.

Heading back to the hotel just before sunset, there is time to relax, shower and unwind and dive into discussion on the day's exploration. We recommend eating at the hotel tonight, although just down from the hotel there are a couple of cool restaurants worthy of seeking out if you wish. We will give you details on these in advance of your trip!

Hilltribe Hike and Jungle Lunch

Today you head out into hill tribe country where, when not driving on scenic mountain roads, you will be deep-diving into the local Lahu Hill tribe. Nestled in an idyllic valley are the Lahu, the scenset mountain people here who have built a life consisting of bartering and subsistence farming. Virtually self-sufficient, they know intricately the land and the magic it contains, enabling them to live a life where culture and traditions have remained pretty much untouched since the beginning of their migration here from neighboring countries.

You will meet the villagers and take a deep dive into Lahu traditions, from daily rituals and festivals to shamans. Eat lunch prepared fresh from the land the scenset way, cooked on open flames in bamboo tubes, looking out onto stunning mountain panoramas. This is a real authentic hill tribe interaction, and you are the only operator that works with the village, providing sustainable tourism initiatives that bring cultures and traditions alive and educate the outside world. Notes: Feel free to donate if you wish books, pens, even a chicken or pig (we can help you with this), but please do not bring or distribute sweets or medicines to villagers here as they do not have the same levels of access to dentists and doctors.
