Bangkok

At first glance, Bangkok seems like a city of mismatches. Modern skyscrapers loom over centuries-old temples and street vendors serve up spicy noodles across from Michelin-star restaurants, but it’s exactly these incongruencies that give Bangkok its universal appeal, luring everyone from student backpackers to elite travelers. Once you’ve acclimated to the heat—both in the air and on your plate—you won’t be able to get enough of the city’s piquant energy.

4:45AM Angkor Wat Sunrise and Exploration

Your sunrise tour starts at pre-dawn to witness the breathtaking view of the tropical sun emerging from behind the iconic lotus towers of Angkor Wat. Constructed over a period of 30 years during the reign of King Suryavarman II [AD1113], by some measures it is the largest religious complex in the world.

Originally a Hindu Mountain temple aligned to the spring equinox, around the C16th it was converted to a Theravada Buddhist monument, a capacity in which it continues today.

By road to Ta Prohm 11km away, pausing to collect entry passes at the Archaeological Park Entrance. Take your time to walk through the temple from the West entrance to the East entrance to meet again with your driver (walk 1–2 km).

Pause for a light breakfast around this peaceful area before exploring further. End the morning at Angkor Wat by the quieter and less frequented Eastern causeway. The temple is busy at any time of day, but late morning is the quietest time for us to explore and admire this architectural wonder and the world class bas reliefs.

Explore the well preserved central complex and detailed bas-reliefs depicting scenset from Hindu mythologies and battles of the ancient empire. The beauty in balance and composition, combined with its sheer vast scale ensure Angkor Wat’s place as the crowning achievement in Khmer art and architecture. This is truly one of travel’s remaining great adventures.

Return by road to Siem Reap for lunch (own cost). Your guide can recommend a wide selection of excellent eateries to suit all tastes and budgets. Please ask for more details.

Afternoon Walking Tour in Hoi An

Between the 15th and 19th centuries, Hoi An, known then as Faifo, was a prosperous trading port, attracting ships from China, Japan, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, among others.

Hoi An's narrow lanes are ideal for a guided walking tour of its many atmospheric sights, including: old merchant houses with influences from Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese architecture; the 400-year-old Japanese Covered Bridge (under renovation), first built in the 1590s by the Japanese community to link them with the Chinese quarters across the stream; the Assembly Hall of the Chaozhou Chinese Congregation with its intricate woodcarvings; and the colorful market with stalls brimming with local specialties, including silk, which can be turned into fashionable garments within a day or two. The pretty Lantern Market is located in An Hoi, across the river from central Hoi An.

This is one of the most scenic markets in Vietnam and, as the name suggests, you can buy traditional lanterns here in all different shapes and sizes. You will also have the opportunity to experience crafting lanterns with your own hands.
