Salzburg Restaurant Recommendations

Gourmet dining meets authentic, rustic charm in Sacher’s Zirbelzimmer, preserved in its scenset state since it was first opened in 1866. This restaurant is a part of your hotel and is overlooking the Salzach river. Diners can enjoy Austrian classics as well as seasonal and refined creations by Executive Chef Michael Gahleitner, which have been awarded a Gault Milleau toque.

The atmosphere here is pleasantly down-to-earth, and the waitstaff laid-back and friendly. An appealing amuse-bouche of bread and greaves whets the appetite for the modern, seasonal dishes on the menu, such as the saddle of venison served with caramelized chestnuts, chicory and saffron apple. Drinks are self-service – you even mix your own gin and tonic at the bar! Brunch on Saturdays and cash payments only.

Housed in a distinctive glass vault with an elegant interior and a magnificent view of the city, Schloss Mönchstein's fine dining restaurant is really impressive. Here, well-drilled waitstaff serve fabulous modern cuisine with a personal touch. Opt for one of two set menus (one vegan), or order premium steak and classics like sole fried whole and Wiener schnitzel à la carte. The wine list includes a decent selection of Austrian labels as well as some big names from France and Italy.

Vienna Restaurant Recommendations

1 Michelin Star

  • Pramerl & the Wolf: This former pub in Vienna's ninth district is now a great casual fine dining restaurant. In a pleasantly informal atmosphere, the friendly and highly competent front-of-house team serve dishes that draw on modern inspiration and feature contrasts that work well. A sophisticated surprise menu with the focus squarely on the excellent ingredients is proposed.

2 Michelin Star

  • Steireeck: This fine dining restaurant in the spacious Stadtpark is very modern, with its chic design and clean lines and the creative cuisine of a chef who cooks regional produce with great precision and refinement. Excellent, professional service. Be sure to take advantage of the bread and cheese trolley – the selection is impressive!

3 Michelin Star

  • Amador: A culinary highlight for the city and for Austria. This restaurant's location on the outskirts of the city in the Hajszan Neumann wine estate is something special in itself. Here, a wonderful brick vaulted ceiling and stylish interior design make for a distinctive look. The chef's cuisine more than lives up to the setting: the finest ingredients are used to create a modern and sophisticated set menu comprising dishes that are finely balanced and consistently harmonious. The creative mastermind of this operation is supported by a highly motivated and pleasingly cordial team.

Modern/Contemporary

  • Vestibül: With a penchant for seasonal and regional produce, this restaurant serves flavorsome culinary delights such as freshwater fish dishes or classics like Wiener schnitzel. The imposing historical building, which also houses the famous Burgtheater, makes for a unique location with a stylish interior that has a typically Viennese feel with its striking columns and gorgeous stuccowork.
  • Specht: This restaurant in a little side street in the city centre is a wonderfully cosy setting for a pleasant tête-à-tête or meal among friends. Diners can expect delicious traditional Viennese cuisine prepared using local ingredients. The pretty interior combining modern design, wooden floors, dark green wall panelling and partially vaulted ceilings creates a warm atmosphere.
  • Motto am Fluss: When you’re looking for a fun night out, why not opt for one right on the Danube? The chic Motto am Fluss restaurant is located within the terminal for the Danube Canal ferries, but it’s like no dock you’ve ever seen before. The futuristic and super-bright space looks like a sleek cruise ship itself. On the lower level, the restaurant, with its black-and-white-checkered floor and silver orb lamps, reflects Venetian influences. Here, you can linger over breakfast in the café for a few hours. In warmer months when the weather is good, the terrace is the place for cocktails or biodynamic Austrian wines. On weekends, DJs add to the already-high cool factor in the trendy riverside spot.

Local / Traditional

  • Eckel: This family-run restaurant in Vienna's beautiful 19th district has its fair share of regulars who come to sample its range of classic, flavoursome Austrian specialities. On the menu, you will find familiar favourites such as Wiener schnitzel, seasonal dishes with game, but also seafood including lobster. The attentive waitstaff and cultivated atmosphere add to the appeal of this place, not to mention the splendid garden terrace!
  • Lugeck: Set in the impressive Regensburger Hof building, Lugeck is run by the same family behind the historic Schnitzel restaurant Figlmüller. This gastro-pub take on an old-school wine tavern offers Austrian classics and an array of international dishes.
