Zürich
Zürich
Zürich

Your first stop is Zurich. It might be Switzerland’s metropolis but it’s also compact and pleasant. From the cobbled streets of the old town to the shops along Bahnhofstrasse, the city center is a delight to explore. Despite being the financial and commercial hub of Switzerland, it doesn’t feel hectic once you’re sitting beside the lake with snow-dusted mountains crowning the horizon - and not a bank in sight. This almost-perfect urban space has the stereotypical clean streets and great public transport but it’s no sleepy backwater. The biggest Swiss city is also the liveliest and most diverse, with a vibrant cultural scene and buzzing nightlife, not forgetting food that goes far beyond fondue.

🥾
Hiking Panoramic Tour

Your last hike is renowned as one of Switzerland's finest high trails: the ridge path linking the Klingenstock and Fronalpstock peaks, with its many flights of steps.

It affords views of more than ten Swiss lakes and countless Alpine peaks in Central Switzerland. You can also discover a variety of Alpine flowers along the route.

The journey to the starting point of this hike is already quite an experience! To reach the car-free village of Stoos (1,300 m.a.s.l.), you can choose between the Morschach-Stoos cable car and the world's steepest funicular (Schwyz/Schlattli-Stoos). At its steepest point, the funicular has a gradient of 110 percent.

Cross the little mountain village on foot, and then take the chairlift up to the Klingenstock (operating hours depend on season and weather). Of course, you can also make the ascent on foot. The sky-high ridge path starts at the summit: with 360o panoramic views all the way, you hike westwards via Rot Turm to Nollen.

  • Included: Full-day hiking panoramic tour with private English-speaking driver-guide, a luxury car at disposal full day, cable car/ funicular tickets.
  • Excluded: Lunch to be paid locally.

Lake Lucerne

Known to the locals as Vierwaldstättersee, English speakers simply call it Lake Lucerne. Twisting and turning into smaller coves and inlets, from the water you might think you’re cruising through fjords because of the towering mountains around it. But Lucerne is an alpine lake in every sense of the word, with its crystal clear water clean enough to drink and bucolic mountain towns along its picturesque shores.

Everywhere you turn at Bürgenstock there seems to be floor-to-ceiling windows, outdoor balconies, or a wrap-around pool, which makes sense once you see the views of Lake Lucerne from the mountaintop resort. Stars once lived on the property, but a major renovation in 2017 made sure that Bürgenstock’s heyday is nowhere near ending, especially thanks to the opening of one of Europe’s most highly anticipated new spas.

Lake Lucerne Recommendations

Sights

  • Old Town: Wander around the historic town center on the right bank of River Reuss. Navigate the old painted houses, Kornmarkt, and the Rathuas to get a feel for the local vibe in this charming destination.
  • Kapellbrücke: Also known as "Chapel Bridge", this is the oldest truss bridge in the world and a true icon of Lucerne. Adorning the ceiling of the walkway are paintings dating back to the 17th century depicting the history of the region.
  • The Rosengart Collection: For a museum visit, we suggest the Rosengart Collection where art collector Siegfried Rosengart and his daughter, Angela, display one of the most prominent modern art collections in Europe including works by Picasso, Klee, Chagall, Monet, Matissse, Miró, Braque and Fernand Léger.

Restaurants

  • Mill'Feuille: A fantastic place for lunch located directly on the River Reuss
  • Restaurant Stern: A contemporary take on Swiss cuisine located in a 700-year old building
  • Zunfthausrestaurant Pfistern: This former guild house offers seasonal Swiss dishes with views over Kapellebrucke
  • Mardi Gras: Whether you're looking for a coffee or glass of wine, you'll find both at this artsy café
  • Café Tacuba: For a quick pick-me-up, Café Tacuba is a great spot for a coffee break
🌿

Mount Pilates

The snowy peaks of Mount Pilatus don’t just beautifully frame the city – they provide an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors just 20 minutes away. The world’s steepest cogwheel railway is an excellent way to take in the alpine scenery – and you can even ride in the driver’s cabin. Alternatively, take a panoramic cable car trip to the top from Kriens. On the mountain itself, a host of activities await year-round, including hiking, climbing and summer tobogganing.

Recommendation by scenset. No booking has been made.

🗝️
Museum Bellpark

Inside a storybook-worthy house in Lucerne’s leafy suburb of Kriens is Museum Bellpark. It explains the history of Kriens through photos, sketches and drawings – but the biggest draw is the museum’s ever-changing displays of contemporary themes such as architecture, as well as striking Swiss art and photography. It’s also very child-friendly, with playful discovery sessions during the autumn.

Recommendation by scenset. No booking has been made.

🍺
Rathaus Brauerei

The Renaissance-style building of Lucerne’s Rathaus (town hall) also contains a brewery and pub, which produces flavoursome beers that vary according to the season. In winter, sink a glass of full-bodied, fragrant Rathaus Bock – a strong beer with a hint of banana. An extensive menu of traditional food is also available: try the Weisswürst (spiced white sausage) or Luzerner Käsekuchen (a savory cheese tart).

At Leisure - Oktoberfest

Spend the day at leisure on the grounds of the world-famous Munich Oktoberfest. Head to Theresienwiese and revel in the absolute joy that is Munich's Oktoberfest, which began as a public event to celebrate the marriage of Kronprinz Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Today, it is the largest Volksfest (or people's fair) in the world with around 7 million visitors each year, consuming some 7 million liters of beer.

Oktoberfest Tips
  • Before you go, be sure to get to an ATM and take out plenty of cash! Oktoberfest is largely cash only! You'll likely need more cash than you realize.
  • Entry into the beer tents is free! Reservations are not needed. A quarter of the seating in the main tents are not reservable and are "first come, first serve". On the weekends, half the seats cannot be reserved until 3 pm.
  • During the week, the large tents at Oktoberfest (including the Oide Wiesn) are open from morning to late evening. On weekends, the tents open their doors earlier in the morning.
  • To ensure seating, we recommend getting to the Oktoberfest grounds as early in the day as possible, even at opening if you're up for it! In the evening, seating can be more difficult to come across. We therefore suggest doing your tent hopping in the morning/early afternoon.
  • The crowd-favorite tents include Augustiner Festhalle, Armbrustschützenzelt Paulaner, Hofbräu-Festzelt, Hacker-Festzelt, and the Löwenbräu-Festzelt. You can read about each of the tents here.
  • Every 20 minutes, the tent bands will play a classic Oktoberfest tune called "Ein Prosit". The lyrics which translate to "A toast, a toast, to cheers and good times", if you'd like to sing along are:

Ein Prosit, ein Prosit
Der Gemütlichkeit!
Ein Prosit, ein Prosit
Der Gemütlichkeit!

Please check out the official Oktoberfest website for additional information.
