The appeal of Spain’s capital city is how laidback it is. Visitors don’t come for the big-name attractions, but for the local lifestyle. Wander labyrinthine streets through colorful neighborhoods, stumbling in and out of tapas bars along the way. Meals are served late and last for hours since the locals would never rush good food, wine, and company. Of course, there are some sights you can’t miss, including a glitzy royal palace and cherished art museums.

The historic old town, also known as “Madrid de los Austrias” (referring to the Hapsburg empire), is a living example of the city’s 16th and 17th century heyday, as is its impressive Plaza Mayor, which was opened in 1620 and remains one of Spain’s most popular spots.

It’s clear from the moment you step foot in Barcelona that it’s unlike any other Spanish city. The boulevards are wider, the architecture is quirkier, and, if you have an ear for languages, you may hear that the locals are speaking Catalan, not Spanish. Gaudi’s masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia, is just one of his architectural gems scattered about the city. With something to offer art enthusiasts, adventurous foodies, and beach loungers, it’s no wonder that Barcelona is one of Europe’s top destinations.

Embark on a walking tour with your local guide through Barcelona’s charming Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic in Catalan), comprising the oldest parts of the city, including several significant medieval buildings and what’s left of its old Roman wall and temple. Although today the district’s labyrinth of narrow medieval streets – which still roughly follow the original Roman grid – is also home to numerous neo-Gothic facades and structures added to bolster the tourist trade in the 19th and 20th centuries, along with many trendy shops and bars, authentic historic architecture from the 13th to 16th centuries remains to be seen here – such as the Palau Reial Major, a complex of palaces in Plaça del Rei, and the city’s Gothic Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia. And you will also visit the only Picasso Museum inaugurated when the artist was alive.

Why we love it for you: The Cotton House Hotel stands imposingly on the site of the former headquarters of the Cotton Textile Foundation “Fundación Textil Algodonera”, an emblematic 19th-century building in the neoclassical style which is a landmark in the city of Barcelona. Built on the orders of a family of the Catalan bourgeoisie when the textile industry was at its height, it was sold in the middle of the 20th Century to the Cotton Producers Guild which established its headquarters there with the aim of housing the highest possible number of cotton-producing bodies and services: the idea was to create a genuine Cotton House Hotel.

In selecting these plots, careful consideration was given to the habitat, microclimate and orientation, as well as the low yield of the vines with an average age of fifty years.
