Barcelona

It’s clear from the moment you step foot in Barcelona that it’s unlike any other Spanish city. The boulevards are wider, the architecture is quirkier, and, if you have an ear for languages, you may hear that the locals are speaking Catalan, not Spanish. Gaudi’s masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia, is just one of his architectural gems scattered about the city. With something to offer art enthusiasts, adventurous foodies, and beach loungers, it’s no wonder that Barcelona is one of Europe’s top destinations.

Arrive at your hotel and unwind from your journey before you venture out to explore Barcelona.

🛎️
15:00 - Check in

We have notified the hotel of your early arrival and have requested an earlier check-in. This can only be granted on the day of your travels as it is dependent on availability. In the event that our request cannot be accommodated, the hotel will be happy to hold onto your bags as you enjoy exploring town.

Valencia

Valencia is the third-largest city in Spain with a thriving cultural, eating and nightlife scenset. On its river are the strikingly futuristic buildings of the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, designed by a local architect. Other brilliant contemporary buildings grace the city, which also has many Modernista buildings, great museums, a long stretch of beach and a large, characterful old quarter. Valencia, surrounded by its huerta, a fertile zone of market gardens, is famous as the home of rice dishes such as paella, but its buzzy dining scenset offers plenty more besides; it's a superb spot for eating.

🌊
Castillo de Peñíscola

The 14th-century castle was built by the Knights Templar on Arab foundations and later became home to a prominent figure known as ‘Papa Luna’. There are various exhibits relating to the history of the castle and town, as well as a former cannon outpost converted into a garden with special views.

This is local information, no tour has been reserved

🏯
Ciudad de las Artes y Ciencias

Futuristic and otherworldly, this cultural complex designed by a renowned local architect underpins Valencia’s reputation for innovative design. Begin with the Palau de les Arts, the towering white opera house that cantilevers over an azure pool, then track down the answers to any burning questions about the world in the science museum. Its "Chromosome forest" does a great job of explaining how genes work.

👣
16:00 - Historical Valencia

This walking tour focuses on Valencia’s attractive old quarter, showcasing representative squares such as Plaza of the Virgen and Plaza of the Reina. We'll visit the cathedral's interior, admiring paintings, the Holy Grail, and Renaissance frescoes. The tour includes visits to the Modernist-style Central Market (a large food market) and the gothic guild hall, Lonja de los Mercaderes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Optionally, we can visit the San Nicholas Church or the Palace of Marqués de Dos Aguas, housing the National Ceramics Museum, which features exhibits including pieces from the Islamic period, 15th-century ceramics, Alcora style, and Picasso's work. The tour concludes with a recommended tasting of horchata, a local drink made with tiger nuts.

Porto

The second-biggest Portuguese city is in the midst of a travel renaissance, with an uptick of tourists also bringing new restaurants, bars, cafes, and cultural events. But in a rare instance of having your pastel de nata and eating it too, Porto hasn’t lost its soul that made it so attractive in the first place. The brightly colored buildings, lazy lunches, and riverside wine bars are an ingrained way of life in Porto and simply too good to give up.

Arrive at your hotel and check in before venturing out to enjoy the city.

Enjoy Local Highlights!

This evening traditional attractions of the night of São João include street concerts, dancing parties, bonfire jumping, eating barbecued sardines, caldo verde and meat, drinking wine and releasing illuminated flame-propelled balloons over Porto's summer sky.

  • At midnight, make a short break to look at the sky at Saint John's firework spectacle near the river.

It is common for citizens of Porto to keep celebrating until the early hours of the morning. They walk from Porto's riverside core - Ribeira (for instance the parish of São Nicolau) up to the seaside in Foz (parishes of Foz do Douro and Nevogilde) or in the nearby suburb of Matosinhos where they wait for the sunrise near the sea, and sometimes, take a bath in the ocean.

This is a recommendation - no activity has been booked by Scenset

The night of São João is very special in Porto.

Your Stay: Jardins do Porto Boutique Guest House

Why we love it for you: A first-choice stay in Portugal’s second city, this boutique guesthouse resides in a one-time bourgeois townhouse and is a prime example of all that’s good about Porto’s current approach to design-led, boutique stays: rescuing a site, making a feature of its historic bones (a showpiece skylight, high stucco ceilings) and tempering any stiff opulence with warm, refined materials (lightwoods, silk drapes, dark leather accents). This interplay of traditional and contemporary is as smooth as the Douro’s current, and is the perfect foil for the hotel’s green-fingered theme – each room is named after one of the city’s gardens, rooms are flush with a healthy selection of foliage, and the conservatory restaurant serves from a plant-based menu. Breakfast here is fully vegetarian 🌱.

From here:

  • Walk accross the higher part of the bridge Ponte Luis I for some more views and to enjoy the port on the other side.
