Graduation Trip in Spain & Italy

There’s something familiar about Spain that draws visitors, who maybe remember a few phrases of high school Spanish or harbor a vague curiosity of bullfighting or siestas. But it’s the staggering diversity—of cultures, languages, cuisines, and landscapes—that keeps travelers coming back again and again.

Thanks to decades of cinema, centuries of art, and millenia of history, everyone is more or less familiar with the fantasy of Italy. You think you know Italian food and Roman landmarks, but not until you arrive in the country do you realize that everything you thought you knew is really just the tip of an enormous iceberg.

Barcelona

It’s clear from the moment you step foot in Barcelona that it’s unlike any other Spanish city. The boulevards are wider, the architecture is quirkier, and, if you have an ear for languages, you may hear that the locals are speaking Catalan, not Spanish. Gaudi’s masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia, is just one of his architectural gems scattered about the city. With something to offer art enthusiasts, adventurous foodies, and beach loungers, it’s no wonder that Barcelona is one of Europe’s top destinations.

Barcelona Restaurant Recommendations

There's no shortage of great food in Barcelona, and some of the best meals are at the bar you stumble into by surprise. Here's a list of some top places to eat. Please let us know if you'd like reservations.

  • Can Ramonet: Paella is perhaps the quintessential Spanish dish, and the best place to eat it is near the coast. Head to Barceloneta neighborhood near the water and try one of their famous paellas (remember in Spain, paella is traditionally lunch food, not dinner!).
  • Solomillo: Indulge all your darkest carnivorous desires at this meat-lovers’ paradise, where the name of the restaurant is the same as your order (solomillo means “sirloin steak”). This is the best steak in Barcelona and the menu is customizable to your liking.
  • Berbena: Few tourists have heard of Berbena. Inside, there are daily batches of home-baked bread that smell like your grandma’s kitchen, comfort food like hearty beef with wine stew and gooey slices of Spanish omelet, platters of locally sourced cheese and charcuteries.
  • Bocanariz: Visit this unassuming wine bar which has a selection of hundreds of bottles, from Cataluña, around Spain, and the world. Paired with some small bites to snack on, it's the perfect Spanish bar experience.
  • La Pepita: A more casual eatery with a fun vibe and delicious menu to accompany it. It's always filled with locals, a good sign for any place to eat.

This is a recommendation only.

🍸
Artisanal Bars in Barcelona

Barcelona is a hotspot for craft cocktail bars within Spain and all of Europe. Take a visit to the some of the most innovative bars in the city.

  • Paradiso: If there's one bar to visit, it's Paradiso. It's been named as the best bar in the world, and it lives up to the hype. As there is usually a line to get in, we recommend visiting with our guide who can reserve a place and take you around the neighborhood while you wait for a table.
  • FOCO: A new bar in the very hip Gracia neighborhood, this local joint brings its own twist on delicious cocktails (try the rasberry Clover Club or salted espresso martini).
  • Jamboree Jazz Club: This is a bar / music venue with live performances every night, usually by artists who occupy the world of jazz. Most shows require a ticket to confirm entrance, but once you're inside it's a place to enjoy good music, good drinks, and lots of dancing.

This is a recommendation only.

Your Stay: Cotton House

Why we love it for you: Members of a bygone cotton guild—who once occupied this very building—would be honored that the Cotton House hotel pays homage to their humble roots. In addition to the name, there’s an in-house atelier and decorative touches that blend its storied past with an avant-garde present. In fact, the long-ago textile workers would surely be just as impressed by the tropical-themed patio, chic cocktail bar, and rooftop pool overlooking the city.

Florence

In many ways, visiting Florence today feels like a trip directly into the Renaissance. The energy that inspired the likes of da Vinci and Michelangelo is still palpable, from the grandiose pink and green facade of the Duomo to an unembellished plate of Florentine steak with potatoes. It’s easy to get engrossed by the art and shopping in the historic center, but walk across the Ponte Vecchio to find Florence’s most authentic osterias and enotecas on the left bank of the river.

⚒️
Recommendation: The Accademia Gallery

Crown your day discovering the magnificent Accademia Gallery, home to one of the world's most famous artworks: Michelangelo's David, a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture. Sculpted in marble by a young artist, the statue came to symbolize the defense of civil liberties embodied in the Republic of Florence, an independent city-state threatened on all sides by more powerful rival states and by the hegemony of a prominent family.

On the first Sunday of the month, the Accademia Gallery offers free admission to all visitors. If you'd like the chance to see David, you can visit independently upon arrival in Florence. Advance tickets are not available, and the last entrance is at around 6:20 p.m. Expect a queue.

  • Buca dell’Orafo offers traditional Tuscany dishes in a surrounding that reproduces the typical atmosphere of an ancient Florentine restaurant.

Day 4: Florence At Leisure
🌻

Enjoy today at leisure, exploring Florence.

You may enjoy:

Exploring Florence
  • Visit Boboli Garden, great for an afternoon stroll! It also features five museums: the Museum of Russian Icons, the Treasury of the Grand Dukes, the Imperial and Royal Apartments, the Museum of Costume and Fashion, and the Gallery of Modern Art.
  • Enjoy a panoramic point in Florence to take some nice pictures, the best point is definitely Piazzale Michelangelo, especially at sunset time. If you enjoy being active, you can reach Piazzale Michelangelo by taking a nice walk; otherwise, you can easily reach it with a taxi!
  • Bardini Villa features beautiful Renaissance gardens above the city filled with wisteria; it's a great place to watch the sunset over Florence. There is also a working monastery you can visit.
  • The Duomo is a constituent of the Monumental Complex of Santa Maria del Fiore, joined by Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Baptistery, Santa Reparata, and the Opera del Duomo Museum. Positioned in close proximity to the cathedral, all of these attractions are accessible with a single ticket. You can also climb to the top of Cathedral dome.
  • The Baptistery of San Giovanni is one of the oldest buildings in Florence across from the Florence Cathedral. Inside, the golden mosaic ceiling is the standout piece. It's steeped in history!

These are recommendations only - no bookings have been made.

Coffee Shops

Florence has some wonderful coffee shops, a few of our favorites are:

  • Ditta Artigianale, known for bringing specialty coffee to Florence, it has multiple locations in the city. It's not just about espresso here; they offer a variety of brewing methods and a selection of beans from around the world. Their scenset location is in the historic center, making it a great stop during a day of sightseeing.
  • La Ménagère is part coffee bar, part restaurant, and part concept store, La Ménagère is a beautiful space to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or anytime. The interior is uniquely designed, and the atmosphere is perfect for either working on your laptop or relaxing with friends.
  • Caffè Gilli is one of the oldest coffee houses in Florence, located in Piazza della Repubblica. Caffè Gilli provides not just coffee but a historical experience. Its pastries are as much of an attraction as its espresso, and the ambiance brings you back to the glamour of early 20th-century Italy.
  • Caffè Paszkowski: Another historical café located in Piazza della Repubblica, it has a rich history and was once a brewery. It's a great place to enjoy coffee while soaking in the historical atmosphere and occasionally enjoying live music.
  • Caffè Rivoire: Situated in Piazza della Signoria, offering a prime view of the Palazzo Vecchio, Rivoire is known for its hot chocolate but also serves excellent coffee. It's a perfect spot to relax after visiting the nearby Uffizi Gallery or just to enjoy the view of one of Florence's most magnificent squares.

This is a recommendation only.

🍹
Apericena

This is one of our favorite things to do in Italy, combining "aperitivo" and "cena" (dinner). There are certain bars that offer a fair amount of bites to eat with drinks, either free of charge, with a small fee or à la carte, depending on whether you are there for an aperitif. It's a way to experience the city like a local!

Tuscany

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the magic of Florence, but there’s so much more to Tuscany outside of the capital city. Hop in the car and the city quickly gives way to medieval villages, terracotta estates, and endless rows of vineyards. The region is renowned for its history and art, but sensual pleasures reign supreme: copious glasses of wine, simple cooking with seasonal ingredients, natural thermal baths. If you’re seeking la dolce vita, you’ll find it in Tuscany.

Your Stay: Il Borro Toscana

Why we love it for you: From the moment you arrive, it’s as though you’ve been transported to a Tuscan village of yesteryear. Everything is decentralized, so you’ll find staff members walking around, perhaps on their way back from picking produce for dinner or tending to the grapes at the vineyards. Each suite is individually decorated and named, but always with the style of returning home to your cozy countryside cottage.

Rome

With an uncanny sense of foresight, Rome was first called the Eternal City 2,000 years ago. Even by today’s standards, it’s still grand in a way that few other places can compare to. The buildings are dilapidated and the roads disheveled, but chaos has never looked so exquisite. The cobblestone streets may be nonsensical, but a wrong turn always leads to an unexpected delight: an intimate piazza, a baroque fountain, or a homey trattoria serving house-made cacio e pepe.

Rome Restaurant Recommendations
  • Pipero is a 1-Michelin star restaurant, long-favoured by food enthusiasts in the capital, with simple dishes which are nonetheless full of character.
  • Felice a Testaccio is a simple, family, trattoria-style atmosphere. Without a doubt, one of the standard-bearers of Latium cuisine.
  • Bistrot 64 boasts the attractive, informal decor of a bistro combined with surprisingly creative and imaginative cuisine.
  • Moi is a small and decidedly smart place. A chef cooks fresh seasonal ingredients with modern techniques, which can also change daily.
  • Prati Rione Gastronomico offers a varied ranging from bistro to pastry, from cocktail bar to bakery; as well as a pizzeria. Well-made cuisine - the choice is limited, but the quality is tantalizing!
  • Piccolo Buco is an exceptional pizzeria where you can choose from pizza Roma, spaghetti carbonara and exotic salami.
  • Aroma is a 1-Michelin star tribute to the city and the aromas of Mediterranean cuisine that is served here together with local specialties. The dishes are seasoned by a chef with a touch of creativity.
  • La Pergola is a 3-Michelin star restaurant and Rome’s most famous roof garden. It's also considered to be the most international restaurant in Italy.
  • Taverna dello Spuntino has a particularly striking interior. From its old tufa passageways converted into a wine cellar in the basement, to its charming dining rooms with brick-vaulted arches where hams, flasks of wine, fruit and antipasti all form an attractive display.

Menorca

If you’ve never heard of the Spanish island of Menorca, then the locals would probably consider that a success. The Mediterranean paradise is known for its authentic local culture, locally-sourced gastronomy, and secluded beaches, especially when compared to its much more popular neighbors, Mallorca and Ibiza. While the other islands spent decades catering to big resorts and tourists, Menorca did just the opposite, meaning more virgin beaches and opportunities to fully disconnect.

🍽️
Menorca Restaurant Recommendations

Menorca is best-known for its "kilometer zero" cuisine, meaning ingredients are locally sourced from freshly caught seafood, homegrown produce, and Menorcan cows.

  • Mestre d'Aixa: This is one of the best places to eat in Mahón, located right on the port and with a creative fusion menu that never disappoints.
  • Cap Roig: Fresh seafood is always good at Cap Roig, but the paella is their specialty. It's about a 10-minute drive from Mahón, but make sure to go for lunch or sunset so you can take in the incredible views.
  • Binifadet: One of Menorca's top wineries, stop here to try a glass or two of local wine, paired with their delicious gourmet menu.
  • Sa Pedrera des Pujol: Journey into the Menorcan countryside at this small restaurant, which is often listed as one of the best restaurants on the island.
  • Pez Limon: Located in charming Ciutadella, this fun restaurant serves "comida del autor" cuisine which is scenset, surprising, and always tasty.

Day 13: At Leisure in Menorca

Enjoy the final days of your trip at leisure, relaxing by the beach and exploring the island at your own rhythm. We'll give you ideas of what to see and help with any logistics necessary.

🚲
Recommendation: E-Bike Around Menorca

Your hotel offers e-bikes available to rent, and a massive property to explore. Take your bike straight to the beach, or go for a ride around the Cami de Cavalls, a trail that circumnavigates the entire island.

This is a recommendation only.

🎨
Recommendation: Hauser & Wirth Gallery

This high-brow art gallery from renowned Hauser & Wirth is located on the tiny Isla del Rey inside the Mahón port. It's a beautiful setting with incredible art pieces, plus an on-site restaurant that's a true gem. Also on the island is an 18th-century hospital you can tour from Menorca's days as a British colony.

It's free to visit the gallery, but you need to purchase roundtrip ferry tickets. Ferries depart every 30 minutes.

This is a recommendation only.

🚙
Self-Drive or Taxi to Cave Bar

Head out from your hotel in your rental car or ask your hotel concierge for help calling a taxi. Be sure to dress nicely—you'll want to take photos!

🕺
6:30 p.m. | Sunset in a Cave Bar

Take a visit to the Cova d'en Xoroi, hands down one of the coolest bars you'll ever see. It's built into the side of a cave overlooking the Mediterranean, perfect for taking some pictures while enjoying a cocktail or two. Enjoy live music while watching the sunset!

  • Entrance Time: Early evening
  • Departure Time: Late evening
  • Includes: Sunset session with live music and one drink per person
  • Reservation Name: will be provided
  • Confirmation Code: will be provided

The Cova d'Xoroi has a dress code policy of no beachwear, no athletic wear, and no sleeveless shirts.

Menorca's Best Beaches

Here are some of the best beaches you can visit—vetted by a local!

  • Cala'n Porter: A gorgeous cove with nearby parking, beachside bars, and beachchairs with umbrellas available to rent.
  • Son Bou: The largest beach on Menorca, stretching over a kilometer. Keep walking along the beach to get away from the crowds.
  • Cala Mitjana: Park and walk about 20 minutes to reach this postcard-worthy cove. If you want even more intimacy, you can keep walking from Cala Mitjana to Cala Trebaluger.
  • Cala Pilar: The north beaches are very different from the south beaches, and Cala Pilar is one of the most picturesque. It's about a 40-minute walk from the parking lot. Get there early before the lot fills up!

Canceled | Dinner at Nonna Bazaar

The restaurant is part of a 400-hectare working farm, set within a centuries-old finca that has been lovingly restored to reflect the laid-back soul and effortless charm of Menorca. The menu at Nonna Bazaar is honest, unpretentious and flavoursome, with a focus on Mediterranean cuisine.

Reservation: Canceled due to weather

You can either ask your hotel to call a taxi or use your car. It's about a 40-minute drive from Son Blanc to Nonna Bazaar.
