Rwanda is often called the “Land of a Thousand Hills” and its capital city is no exception; Kigali is a region of rolling hills, valleys, ridges, and steep slopes. It enjoys a temperate tropical highland climate, a bit cooler than typical due to its high elevation of 1,540 m (5,140 ft). Average daily temperatures range between 15 and 27C (59 and 81F) and don’t fluctuate much throughout the year. Farmland comprises over 60% of the land within the city’s boundaries, mostly in outer areas surrounding the urban center and, like the rest of the country, most of the agriculture is small subsistence farming.
As in all of Rwanda, the last Saturday of each month in Kigali is a morning of mandatory community service called umuganda. One person per household between the ages of 18 and 65 is expected to carry out community tasks such as cleaning streets or building homes for vulnerable people. Most normal services close down during umuganda, and public transportation is limited. People take great pride in this national service and in the ritual of coming together to support one another, and their commitment shows.
Local people are in general very friendly and often willing to share the country’s history of genocide with visitors. The Kigali Genocide Museum is well done and worth a visit for those looking to understand the events leading up to the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
There is also a flourishing local art scene with many new galleries opening up.
On an enchanting boulevard in the heart of Kigali, Rwanda, in a secure location just a five-minute walk from the CBD, lies a hotel. A distinctively rich blend of Rwandan heritage, art and culture with contemporary 5-star comfort in many sophisticated rooms and suites, the hotel provides a private and peaceful retreat like no other for discerning international diplomats and executives. Discover a hotel renowned for going above and beyond to exceed all expectations and establish its reputation as one of the best hotels in Rwanda. The hotel's unique sense of place, landscaped gardens and exquisite health spa and swimming pool set a serene backdrop for a truly extraordinary experience.

Share the magic of Virunga together with loved ones, guarded by the sprawling forests beyond. Two separate bedrooms promise blissful privacy for all, with a king bed in the master room and a second bedroom with convertible twin or king beds. A large central bathroom features a spectacular standalone bath with personal views that follow the changing colors of the natural world. As day turns to dusk, gather outside on a private viewing deck or retreat indoors to share stories around the cosy fireplace.
Just a three hour drive from Kigali, Volcanoes National Park encompasses 160 km2 (60mi2) in a rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, with evergreen and bamboo forests. The national park includes five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains, with Karisimbi being the highest at 4,507 m (14,785 ft). The lush slopes of these volcanoes provide a dramatic natural setting for one of the most thrilling and memorable wildlife experiences: seeing the mountain gorilla in its natural habitat. Roughly half of the world’s wild population of mountain gorillas reside on the Rwandan slopes of the Virungas massif.
Eye to eye with swaying eucalyptus trees, One&Only Gorilla’s Nest is the closest resort to Volcanoes National Park – a historic rainforest home to a diverse tapestry of wildlife, including over 340 mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and 300 bird species. In and around the resort, there is an incredible topography of peaceful sleeping volcanoes that defy gravity, creating an awe-inspiring atmosphere and perfect setting for cyclists.
One&Only Gorilla’s Nest is set against the historic volcanic mountains of Volcanoes National Park – the first national park in Africa and home to endangered mountain gorillas. This is a place that has fostered a spirit of love and protection over the years, most notably from a renowned primatologist.

Although the immense size of the silverbacks might be overwhelming, these 400-pound creatures are actually extremely accommodating to human presence amongst their family. The guides might even teach you a few words in ‘Gorilla’ so you can greet them and show that you are, in fact, friendly!
The day of the trek usually begins with an early start at your hotel and then a drive to park headquarters. Here, park officials assign you to a gorilla family and you meet your gorilla guides. After being briefed on protocols, you head over to the specific starting point, where teams of porters are available for hire. Remember, you are trekking for around 2,500m and so any help is welcome.
Groups are limited to eight guests. The initial trek is usually through rural Rwanda's open fields of potatoes and pyrethrum, until you reach the rough wall boundary of the park itself. From here, your guide will be in communication with the trackers and you will begin the hike through the forest to meet the gorillas. Your permit allows one hour with the gorilla family, after which you say goodbye to your trackers and hike back down to meet your awaiting vehicle.

The Virunga Mountains straddle the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and are home to around 480 mountain gorillas, more than half of the world’s entire population — the rest live in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
In Volcanoes National Park, which encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains, twelve gorilla groups are now habituated for tourism and offer one of the world's most awe-inspiring natural experiences. Light, airy and generously proportioned, suites at &Beyond Grumeti River Lodge aesthetically mirror the natural bow of the Grumeti river. Slumber in very comfy beds and enjoy a bath and indoor shower (with a spectacular view!). Your private plunge pool is the ideal spot for a refreshing dip after a captivating game drive. Contemporary and authentic, dazzling natural light sweeps through the suite, and there is still the sense of being under-canvas safari style thanks to the canvas walls and banana fibre ceilings.
The Serengeti is perhaps the most famous African wilderness area, its name synonymous with the notion of safari for nearly a hundred years. This UNESCO World Heritage site covers 14,750 km2 (5,700 mi2) of premiere game viewing in Acacia woodlands, open grasslands, and undulating savannahs interspersed with seasonal rivers. The park on the northern side borders the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and, together with several other smaller reserves and conservation areas, forms the larger Mara-Serengeti ecosystem.
Stretching all the way to Lake Victoria, the Western Corridor is characterized by the quintessential safari landscape — open plains dotted with the occasional tree, although there are also beautiful riverine woodlands and some thicker bush areas. There is a good population of cats and general game all year round.
&Beyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge is located in the remote western reaches of the Serengeti. Due to its far-flung location, there are very few lodges in this pristine section of the park, which means that guests can expect the ultimate in exclusivity. The lodge is perfectly situated on the banks of a tributary of the Grumeti River. Using the natural bow shape of the river, and paying homage to the circular forms of a traditional Maasai manyatta, the lodge unfolds to reveal an understated sense of luxury.
Walking into the guest area upon arrival is a real wow moment. Spacious decks are perfect for enjoying sundowners overlooking the river and the camp’s rim-flow swimming pool provides a view of the seasonal hippo pools below. The proximity to water draws a profusion of wildlife throughout the day and night.
Adorned with Kitenge fabrics and accentuated with stone walls, the lodge also features the vibrant colors of the fishing communities surrounding Lake Victoria and the grey tones representative of hippo hide that have been beautifully woven into deeply comfortable furnishings and bespoke, hand-made fittings. Enjoy convivial afternoons and evenings around the central circular bar, a masterpiece of woven fabrics and dramatic glass ball light installations. For those looking for an active workout, head to the gym, or if you feel like a pamper session, surrender to an in-room massage.

Enjoy twice-daily game drives from the lodge often encountering large lion prides and clans of hyena, big herds of resident plains game as well as the special black-and-white colobus monkeys, found nowhere else in the Serengeti. Rarely seeing other vehicles makes for an exceptional game viewing experience.

Classical elegance defines our Tented Suites. Beautifully handcrafted artifacts, fine antiques and Chesterfield sofas complete the tasteful interiors. Ensuite bathrooms comprise both indoor and outdoor showers and a ‘star bath’ with sky views. Each tent has a large private deck with a comfortable day bed overlooking the plains of the Maasai Mara, together with the convenience of a personal bar and coffee station.
Refreshing lap pools in each camp provide cool comfort in between captivating game drives. Delectable cuisine is served in a memorable setting beneath the stars and bush breakfasts and romantic sundowners offer an unforgettable African experience. Adventures at Bateleur Camp include twice-daily game drives, including spot-lit night drives. The camp also offers a range of additional activities such as bush walks, hot air balloon safaris, community excursions, a well- equipped gym and wellness treatments in the massage sala.
Timeless views across the boundless plains of the Maasai Mara; known to the Maasai as the ‘spotted’ land, the savannah landscape that unfolds in front of the camp is dotted with balanites trees – a definitive feature of this region. With unbroken views over the grassy plains, guests can while away their afternoon on the private deck of their tent, or alongside the camp swimming pool. Or take advantage of a wellness treatment or sip on a delicious cocktail at our bar.
At over five hundred square kilometers, the Mara Triangle, as it is often referred to, is a scenically stunning 'wedge' of mixed habitats; open savannah dotted with Balanites trees, seasonal streams, springs and marshes that are flanked to the east by the stunning riverine woodland of the Mara River, and to the west by the iconic Siria escarpment and to the south by the 'Lamai wedge' section of the Northern Serengeti. The Mara Conservancy has been under its own jurisdiction for over 15 years and so has arguably better infrastructure, guide discipline and ethics than other parts. The Triangle side of the Mara River also boasts great access points from which to view the herds of thousands of zebras and wildebeest who come to cross the crocodile-infested waters in the high season.
Other than on the escarpment edge, there are significantly fewer camps and lodges in the 'triangle' than in the main reserve and conservancies. This area has been under its own jurisdiction for over 15 years and so has arguably better infrastructure, guide discipline and ethics than other parts.
Here, amidst the reserve’s astounding year-round concentration of animals, including the seasonal Great Wildebeest Migration, guests can have an unsurpassed wildlife experience. Guests can almost exclusively explore this area on a game drive or on foot, enjoying access to pristine outdoor dining locations.
There are two intimate camps of nine tented suites each and a family tent. Each elegant tent, with its own private butler and housekeeper, reflects the ambiance and glamour of Kenyan explorers of old. Slip into a world of hardwood floors, polished silver and copper bathtubs juxtaposed against the romance of the open Mara plains, with their abundant herds of wildlife. Beautifully handcrafted artifacts, fine antiques, leather buttoned Chesterfield sofas, books, and crystal and candlelight adorn the comfortable sitting and dining areas.

Experience the beauty of the Maasai Mara on a hot air balloon flight. Guests will take off at dawn and float in whichever direction the morning winds take them. The altitude may vary from treetop height or lower, which offers a unique perspective and great photographic opportunities, to 1,000 feet, showcasing the vastness of the panorama. From time to time the pilot must put more heat into the balloon with the powerful whisper burners. In between these burns, there is silence apart from the natural sounds below.
Here, guests can sweep their eyes across the panoramic plains and discover the fantastic features unfolding before them, with an abundance of gentle undulating hills, sparkling rivers and verdant grasslands. Dotted in between this lush terrain guests can spot the heads of gentle giraffe foraging from the top of leafy trees, slumbering elephants swaying in the cool breeze, graceful gazelles leaping through the vast expanse and pods of hippos splashing in the water. Probe further and they may see prowling predators stalking across the savanna.
As guests sail above the reserve, they are privy to the daily rituals of the wild things in their natural habitat. It is a beautiful experience to witness the intricacies of the Mara ecosystem and the harmonious coexistence of the vibrant flora and fascinating fauna.
After about an hour, your balloon safari finishes with a flourish. In the time-honoured tradition of balloon flights, toast your return to earth with sparkling wine and enjoy a delicious breakfast that is set up and served at a very special spot. The experience ends with a game drive back to your camp.
This is a once in a lifetime experience to really appreciate the spectacular magnificence of wild Africa.
Please note, there is a 5kg baggage allowance per person.

The months of July to October see over two million animals traverse these plains as part of the Great Wildebeest Migration in their never ending search for water and nutrient dense grasses. This is one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World and what many call the “World Cup of Wildlife.” The energy of the bush is palpable as it literally hums with activity; the sheer numbers of animals boggles the mind and it is all part of being in this place during one of the most exhilarating times of the year.
If you are lucky you may witness a river crossing, when masses of wildebeest and zebra cross the nearby Mara River, taking their chances with the resident crocodiles who lie in wait. The other predators are all present as well, and days here can be very action packed.

Johannesburg, affectionately referred to by locals as “Jozi” or “Joburg,” is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world. Though not traditionally a tourist destination, Johannesburg is a transit point for connecting domestic and international flights and has become a cultural hub, with museums, theaters, art galleries, and libraries. There are opportunities for shopping at upmarket shopping centers like Sandton City, the Mall of Africa, and Nelson Mandela Square and, for souvenirs and African art, at flea markets like Oriental Plaza and the Rosebank Flea Market. Johannesburg is the home of the Constitutional Court, the highest court in South Africa, and tours to the Apartheid Museum often combine a visit to Constitution Hill. Other attractions include former townships like Alexandra and Soweto where visitors learn about South Africa’s apartheid history. The Mandela Museum, located in the former home of Nelson Mandela, is located in Soweto.
InterContinental Johannesburg O.R. Tambo Airport is a safe, easy walk from the international arrivals hall at Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport. We are perfectly located for leisure and business travelers and just a 14-minute train ride from the Sandton CBD. Enjoy unlimited complimentary Wi-Fi, quiet soundproofed rooms, quick check-in and a host of services designed to meet the needs of the modern traveler.

The Sabi Sand Game Reserve, named for the Sabie and Sand Rivers which flow through it, is renowned for its wildlife density and predator interactions; seldom will a visitor not see the Big Five. Although it shares a fenceless boundary with Kruger National Park, much of the wildlife in the Sabi Sand stays more or less in the reserve. Over the years, the animals have become used to the presence of safari vehicles, resulting in close encounters, particularly with the elusive leopards.
Roaming packs of African wild dogs, territorial lions, and large herds of elephants are also signature sightings. As well as having a consistently high density of wildlife, the reserve's conservation ethos keeps vehicle numbers to a minimum at wildlife sightings. This offers a more exclusive safari experience while ensuring the welfare of the habituated animals. Being in the private reserve generally affords more flexibility with opportunities to off-road, enjoy night drives and bush walks, all of which make visiting this area a truly unique experience.
