RWANDA
U.S. passports must be valid for six months after the date of entry into Rwanda. Travelers can obtain a Rwandan visa through the following procedures:
- Obtain a 30-day tourist visa at the port of entry. Credit cards are generally accepted at the Kigali International Airport but are not accepted at some land borders. It is recommended that travelers arrive at the Kigali International Airport with sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for the visa in case credit card transactions are not possible upon arrival. Additional information about this process can be found on the Rwandan Immigration website.
- Obtain a 30-day, 90-day, or 10-year tourist visa through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. Additional information about this process can be found on the Rwandan Embassy’s website.
Immunizations: World Health Organization (WHO) card with yellow fever vaccination if entering from the countries listed on the Rwandan Immigration website.

KENYA
All previous visa entry requirements for Kenya are now replaced by the requirements of ETAs. All Global travelers, including infants and children (except citizens of Kenya and Citizens of the East African Partner States) are required to apply for ETA online prior to their arrival.
All e-visas currently in process will be issued and travelers with existing e-visas will be granted access to Kenya within the validity period of 90 days, without the additional requirement of an ETA.

Below are requirements for the ETA applications:
For all travelers,
- Valid passport for at least six (6) month after your planned date of arrival into Kenya with at least one blank page
- Passport-type photo

Based on your country of residence and travel history the following may also be required:

Travelers are eligible to apply for eTA within 3 months of their arrival date in Kenya. Following the application, a confirmation will be sent to the email address submitted in the application. Upon arrival, the ETA will be sent to the same email address.
The standard processing time for ETAs is three (3) working days.

TANZANIA
Visas are required for U.S. citizens traveling to Tanzania.
Foreign nationals may apply for a visa online in advance of travel. Applicants may complete the e-visa application form and make payment online with a credit card or bank transfer at www.immigration.go.tz. If the e-visa is approved, the applicant will receive a “grant notice” via email. Present a copy of the grant notice to the Immigration Officer on arrival at the airport in Tanzania.
U.S. citizens may also obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at the airport in Tanzania. Be prepared to pay in cash in case connectivity issues make electronic transactions impossible.
A passport valid for a minimum of six months beyond visa issuance and/or date of entry, and at least one blank visa page, is required. Visitors who enter on visas must present a roundtrip ticket and demonstrate they have sufficient funds for their stay.

SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa strictly enforces entry and exit requirements and other immigration laws. Failure to observe these requirements may result in the traveler being denied entry, detained, deported, or deemed inadmissible to enter South Africa in the future.

Two Consecutive Blank Visa Pages: South Africa requires travelers to have two consecutive completely blank visa pages in their passports upon every arrival in South Africa. YOU WILL BE DENIED ENTRY if you do not have two consecutive blank visa pages in your passport. This does not include the endorsement pages.
Immunizations: Travelers entering South Africa from WHO-designated countries with risk of yellow fever virus (YFV) transmission must present their current and valid International Certificate of Vaccination as approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) (“yellow card”). As a general guide, comfortable, casual wash-and-wear clothes are recommended. Muted, earthy colours are preferred for game viewing on safari.
The most practical items to pack:

- Lightweight waterproof jacket
- Hat and gloves for the cold winter months
- More formal attire is appropriate for your stay at prestigious city hotels or on one of the luxury trains
- Good quality sunglasses
- Torch (head torches are practical)
- Malaria tablets (if applicable) and insect repellant
- Antihistamine tablets if you suffer from allergies
- Anti-nausea tablets if you suffer from motion sickness
- Suntan lotion (with a high SPF factor)

- Sufficient memory cards and batteries for your camera equipment
For gorilla trekking you will need:
- A small, lightweight, frameless, waterproof backpack
- Light, waterproof hiking boots or shoes with tread soles
- Thick socks
- Leather or heavy canvas (gardening-style) gloves
- Waterproof rain pants, a rain suit or a poncho with a hood
- Long trousers made of light-weight material
- Waterproof, foldable hat
- Water bottle
Please be aware that your luggage allowance is 1 x 15kg luggage per person in a soft duffel bag on the smaller planes.
- Luggage, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is restricted on charter flights to 15 kg/33 lbs per person in a soft bag. This is for safety and space reasons (suitcases don’t physically fit into the holds)
- Maximum dimensions of the soft bag (no frames or rigid structures) are 25cm (10 inches) x 30cm (12 inches) x 62 cm (24 inches). If it is essential to bring additional luggage you can book an extra seat for an additional 70kg (154lb) but no single bag may weigh more than 32kg.
- The luggage limit is taken very seriously by charter companies and additional luggage could result in valuable possessions being left behind, or extra charges
Before packing for your trip be aware that Tanzania and Kenya have an overall ban on the import, use and possession of all plastic bags (except for official food, medical, agricultural and chemical safety use).
The fine for possession of a plastic bag will be provided in Tanzania, and will be provided in Kenya. We strongly recommend you bring a few cloth carry bags or stuff sacks (which pack down to nothing) from home to store your personal items and laundry, and avoid any use of plastic bags during your trip.
Avoid:
- Clear plastic bags used for demonstrating liquids for airport security in your hand and checked luggage.
- Using plastic bags to protect shoes or damp clothes from the rest of the items in luggage.
- Bagged duty-free purchases made en-route – dispose of bags in the airport building on arrival.
- Accepting any plastic bags with purchases – take paper or cloth bags with you for shopping.
- However, ziplock bags specifically used to carry toiletries are permitted as they are expected to remain with visitors and not be disposed of in Kenya or Tanzania.

Rwanda is often called the “Land of a Thousand Hills” and its capital city is no exception; Kigali is a region of rolling hills, valleys, ridges, and steep slopes. It enjoys a temperate tropical highland climate, a bit cooler than typical due to its high elevation of 1,540 m (5,140 ft). Average daily temperatures range between 15 and 27C (59 and 81F) and don’t fluctuate much throughout the year. Farmland comprises over 60% of the land within the city’s boundaries, mostly in outer areas surrounding the urban center and, like the rest of the country, most of the agriculture is small subsistence farming.
As in all of Rwanda, the last Saturday of each month in Kigali is a morning of mandatory community service called umuganda. One person per household between the ages of 18 and 65 is expected to carry out community tasks such as cleaning streets or building homes for vulnerable people. Most normal services close down during umuganda, and public transportation is limited. People take great pride in this national service and in the ritual of coming together to support one another, and their commitment shows.
Local people are in general very friendly and often willing to share the country’s history of genocide with visitors. The Kigali Genocide Museum is well done and worth a visit for those looking to understand the events leading up to the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
There is also a flourishing local art scene with many new galleries opening up.

Although the immense size of the silverbacks might be overwhelming, these 400-pound creatures are actually extremely accommodating to human presence amongst their family. The guides might even teach you a few words in ‘Gorilla’ so you can greet them and show that you are, in fact, friendly!
The day of the trek usually begins with an early start at your hotel and then a drive to park headquarters. Here, park officials assign you to a gorilla family and you meet your gorilla guides. After being briefed on protocols, you head over to the specific starting point, where teams of porters are available for hire. Remember, you are trekking for around 2,500m and so any help is welcome.
Groups are limited to eight guests. The initial trek is usually through rural Rwanda's open fields of potatoes and pyrethrum, until you reach the rough wall boundary of the park itself. From here, your guide will be in communication with the trackers and you will begin the hike through the forest to meet the gorillas. Your permit allows one hour with the gorilla family, after which you say goodbye to your trackers and hike back down to meet your awaiting vehicle.

The Serengeti is perhaps the most famous African wilderness area, its name synonymous with the notion of safari for nearly a hundred years. This UNESCO World Heritage site covers 14,750 km2 (5,700 mi2) of premiere game viewing in Acacia woodlands, open grasslands, and undulating savannahs interspersed with seasonal rivers. The park on the northern side borders the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and, together with several other smaller reserves and conservation areas, forms the larger Mara-Serengeti ecosystem.
Stretching all the way to Lake Victoria, the Western Corridor is characterized by the quintessential safari landscape — open plains dotted with the occasional tree, although there are also beautiful riverine woodlands and some thicker bush areas. There is a good population of cats and general game all year round.
&Beyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge is located in the remote western reaches of the Serengeti. Due to its far-flung location, there are very few lodges in this pristine section of the park, which means that guests can expect the ultimate in exclusivity. The lodge is perfectly situated on the banks of a tributary of the Grumeti River. At over five hundred square kilometers, the Mara Triangle, as it is often referred to, is a scenically stunning 'wedge' of mixed habitats; open savannah dotted with Balanites trees, seasonal streams, springs and marshes that are flanked to the east by the stunning riverine woodland of the Mara River, and to the west by the iconic Siria escarpment and to the south by the 'Lamai wedge' section of the Northern Serengeti. The Mara Conservancy has been under its own jurisdiction for over 15 years and so has arguably better infrastructure, guide discipline and ethics than other parts. The Triangle side of the Mara River also boasts great access points from which to view the herds of thousands of zebras and wildebeest who come to cross the crocodile-infested waters in the high season.
Other than on the escarpment edge, there are significantly fewer camps and lodges in the 'triangle' than in the main reserve and conservancies. This area has been under its own jurisdiction for over 15 years and so has arguably better infrastructure, guide discipline and ethics than other parts.
Here, amidst the reserve’s astounding year-round concentration of animals, including the seasonal Great Wildebeest Migration, guests can have an unsurpassed wildlife experience. Guests can almost exclusively explore this area on a game drive or on foot, enjoying access to pristine outdoor dining locations.

Experience the beauty of the Maasai Mara on a hot air balloon flight. Guests will take off at dawn and float in whichever direction the morning winds take them. The altitude may vary from treetop height or lower, which offers a unique perspective and great photographic opportunities, to 1,000 feet, showcasing the vastness of the panorama. From time to time the pilot must put more heat into the balloon with the powerful whisper burners. In between these burns, there is silence apart from the natural sounds below.
Here, guests can sweep their eyes across the panoramic plains and discover the fantastic features unfolding before them, with an abundance of gentle undulating hills, sparkling rivers and verdant grasslands. Dotted in between this lush terrain guests can spot the heads of gentle giraffe foraging from the top of leafy trees, slumbering elephants swaying in the cool breeze, graceful gazelles leaping through the vast expanse and pods of hippos splashing in the water. Probe further and they may see prowling predators stalking across the savanna.
As guests sail above the reserve, they are privy to the daily rituals of the wild things in their natural habitat. It is a beautiful experience to witness the intricacies of the Mara ecosystem and the harmonious coexistence of the vibrant flora and fascinating fauna.
After about an hour, your balloon safari finishes with a flourish. In the time-honoured tradition of balloon flights, toast your return to earth with sparkling wine and enjoy a delicious breakfast that is set up and served at a very special spot. The experience ends with a game drive back to your camp.

The Sabi Sand Game Reserve, named for the Sabie and Sand Rivers which flow through it, is renowned for its wildlife density and predator interactions; seldom will a visitor not see the Big Five. Although it shares a fenceless boundary with Kruger National Park, much of the wildlife in the Sabi Sand stays more or less in the reserve. Over the years, the animals have become used to the presence of safari vehicles, resulting in close encounters, particularly with the elusive leopards.
Roaming packs of African wild dogs, territorial lions, and large herds of elephants are also signature sightings. As well as having a consistently high density of wildlife, the reserve's conservation ethos keeps vehicle numbers to a minimum at wildlife sightings.
