Your Stay: Camissa House

Camissa House is a serene, mountainside hideaway found in the heart of Cape Town. Camissa, a name given to this area of Cape Town by its first inhabitants, the Khoi people, means “Place of Sweet Water.” It is this life-giving stream, flowing directly past the hotel which prompted the Dutch to settle here, thus giving birth to the city of Cape Town as we know it today.

Stepping out of the hotel, it is not hard to see where Camissa House’s design inspiration has been sourced. Table Mountain forms the backdrop for this lovely property and is the canvas for the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of the world’s great centers of terrestrial biodiversity. Camissa House is a celebration of Africa’s Cape, its heritage, its meandering history connecting mountain and sea, past to future, and humanity to the earth.

Tswalu Kalahari

Tswalu is a vast, magical land of infinite possibility, with sweeping vistas and a liberating sense of space. The green Kalahari is nature at its most diverse and surprising, and to spend time here is to be touched by exuberant, soulful beauty. It offers an escape to a place that’s governed by the ancient rhythms of the seasons, rather than the clock and the calendar. It offers a vision of hope that brings together conservation, research and unrivaled safari experience.

At Tswalu you’ll encounter species you may have seen elsewhere, along with drier area specialist species that you probably haven’t. While zebra, buffalo and giraffe will be familiar if you’ve been on safari before, this will likely be your first opportunity to capture iconic Kalahari images such as dainty springbok with a backdrop of red sand, or the silhouette of a gemsbok atop a dune. Many of the species found at Tswalu are of particular significance to the San people, as evidenced by their inclusion in ancient galleries of rock art.

There is a timeless quality to Kalahari – it’s a place where humans have wandered and wondered since the dawn of creation.

Your Stay: Tswalu Loapi
Tswalu Loapi
Tswalu Loapi

Backed by the foothills of the Korannaberg mountains, Loapi is set to become Africa’s top luxury tented safari camp. Offering a true wilderness experience that is both private and exclusive, the camp’s six private safari homes under canvas are positioned to make the most of unimpeded views south across the reserve’s characteristic arid savannah.

With at least 100 m (330 ft) between each residence, guests are assured of solitude and seclusion with a dedicated butler and chef to take care of everything.

In Setswana, Loapi means ‘the space below the clouds’, aptly reflected in the camps environmentally sensitive, modular design, combining canvas, glass and steel. Uncluttered, sculptural interiors, enriched by nature’s colors, forms and shapes, optimize the sense of space and evoke the carefree, nomadic spirit of camping.

Tswalu Wildlife

Tswalu is unquestionably one of the best places in southern Africa to see cheetah in the wild. The vast open spaces and antelope herds of the Kalahari readily lend themselves to high-speed pursuits. Visiting Tswalu also gives you front-row seats for sightings of species that prove elusive elsewhere, from aardvark and pangolin to Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra.

Their gregarious nature and amusing antics (think early morning sunbathing and playing chicken with scorpions) have made meerkats extremely popular as subjects of wildlife documentaries. Tswalu's two habituated colonies have accepted the presence of humans without letting it disrupt the important business of grooming and foraging.

Meerkats are just one of the smaller predators which abound at Tswalu: aardwolf, African wild cat and brown hyena are also frequently seen.

Head off on your twice-a-day safari game drives
Head off on your twice-a-day safari game drives

At the entrance to each home is a pavilion, or outpost, from where guests set off on all activities, including day and night game drives, guided walks, a morning with meerkats, field trips with scientific researchers, a dune picnic, or dinner at a restaurant. The outpost is also a welcoming point of return with a bathroom, storage for safari essentials and a choice of refreshments. As with the other camps, guests have private use of a safari vehicle with a dedicated guide and tracker, providing unlimited access to the largest privately protected conservation area in South Africa.

🦏
Rhino Notching Experience

Tswalu, South Africa’s largest private game reserve, offers a conservation experience focusing on genetic data collection of endangered rhino populations of the Southern Kalahari ecosystem. From April to September, guests are welcomed to join the rhino notching initiative to analyse and support the genetic integrity of the protected rhino populations across South Africa after suffering a tragic decline over recent years.

During this intimate wildlife experience, trained trackers and veterinarians dart specific rhino, ideally between two and three years old. After marking and associating the rhino with a recorded number, the team plants a small microchip under the skin and horns for future identity and security purposes. DNA samples are then collected and later added into a global DNA database that helps track and prevent illegally traded rhino horns.

During this encounter, guests form part of the ground crew and are invited to take part in this microchipping experience that includes helping to monitor the rhinos body temperature and breathing. The private rhino notching experience covers the costs of a wildlife veterinarian, the specialized drugs in the darts, and flying expenses. Guests can further participate in Tswalu’s rhino recovery initiatives by donating directly to the Tswalu Foundation. All funds directly contribute to a credible and imperative rhino conservation project to re-establish populations where they can be protected.

As one of the many wildlife conservation experiences, Tswalu practices low-impact, high-value approaches to sustainable ecotourism to help fund the critical conservation work for future generations. Tswalu’s conservation goals focus on restoring the natural environment, re-establishing and protecting biodiversity, and maintaining the Kalahari’s characteristic ecological processes, all carried out through environmental research supported by the Tswalu Foundation. The Tswalu Foundation is a world leader in the field of environmental research within the southern Kalahari and a major influence on all the conservation success Tswalu has accomplished.

Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve, named after a tribal chief, was established in 1963 but has a history of exploration and adventure going back more than a hundred years. The area had been a favorite hunting ground of the chief, and today is a favorite photographic destination for adventurous travelers. It covers about 5,000 km2, encompassing about a quarter of the Okavango Delta, one of the world's largest inland deltas.

The northeast portion borders the Chobe National Park and the Khwai river. The prominent mainland of Chiefs Island and its drier habitats, along with multiple lagoons, create an incredibly diverse ecosystem of riverine woodlands, acacia thickets, grasslands, dry pans, palm fringed islands, and hippo-filled waterways, that provide great game-viewing possibilities. The area offers all-round exceptional game viewing.

Your Stay: Mombo Camp

Elevated on wooden decks beneath towering shade trees, Mombo overlooks a floodplain teeming with game. Elegant, expansive guest suites celebrate the history and traditions of the camp, while a large deck and plunge pool are ideal vantage points from which to observe the passing wildlife.

Located just off the northern tip of Chief’s Island, the largest landmass in the Okavango, Mombo is considered the most fertile area in the Delta, with its mix of habitats attracting large herds followed by numbers and varieties of predators.

Meals at Mombo are designed with conservation in mind, with healthy, delicious recipes that tread lightly on the Earth.

Rebuilt in 2018, Mombo maintains the integrity of its pristine environment through the use of natural materials, minimal human footprint and 100% solar status.

Tour of the Falls

To discover how the Falls were formed and what local customs and traditions surround them it is well worth booking a guided Tour of the Falls. Described by a local tribe living in the area in the 1800’s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ - ‘the Smoke that Thunders’ and in more modern terms as ‘the greatest known curtain of falling water’, Victoria Falls are a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe.

It’s a truly awe-inspiring experience – the sight, the sound, the smell; the humbling feeling that here indeed is Nature’s Supreme Masterpiece. No photograph can begin to depict the reality…and nothing prepares you for your first sight.

This tour is conducted during the daytime. En route, clients may be taken past the ‘Big Tree’ where they may stop and take photos. Clients will be accompanied through the Rainforest by one of our qualified Guides who will give a brief history of the Falls themselves as well as detailing the flora, fauna, bird & wildlife and other points of interest. Guides are also happy to assist clients with photographs whilst visiting this most spectacular of waterfalls. Raincoats are provided when needed.

Sabi Sand Game Reserve

The Sabi Sand Game Reserve, named for the Sabie and Sand Rivers which flow through it, is renowned for its wildlife density and predator interactions; seldom will a visitor not see the Big Five. Although it shares a fenceless boundary with Kruger National Park, much of the wildlife in the Sabi Sand stays more or less in the reserve. Over the years, the animals have become used to the presence of safari vehicles, resulting in close encounters, particularly with the elusive leopards.

Roaming packs of African wild dogs, territorial lions, and large herds of elephants are also signature sightings. As well as having a consistently high density of wildlife, the reserve's conservation ethos keeps vehicle numbers to a minimum at wildlife sightings. This offers a more exclusive safari experience while ensuring the welfare of the habituated animals. Being in the private reserve generally affords more flexibility with opportunities to off-road, enjoy night drives and bush walks, all of which make visiting this area a truly unique experience.

Your Stay: Singita Ebony Lodge

Singita Ebony Lodge is set on the banks of the Sand River, offering a fresh and modern interpretation of the classic safari. The lodge combines the curved lines inspired by the Adobe architecture of North and West Africa with the utilitarian feel of a luxury tented camp while maintaining the rustic essence of its scenset story.

Each of the 12 luxurious suites includes its own private plunge pool with glass and canvas walls optimizing the magnificent views. The decks, which are perfect for leisurely dining and relaxing, are suspended off the river banks, allowing guests to be fully immersed in nature.

Ebony is an exciting mix of past and present - interiors feature gentle colors inspired by nature – indigo, ecru and ochre, while fold-up safari style furniture is matched beautifully with antiques and heirlooms. African art, sourced from local artisans pays a warm tribute to the creativity of the continent. The Conservation Room is at the heart of the main lodge, a consciously curated space showcasing fascinating artifacts where guests can explore the living heritage of the region.

Located in the private Sabi Sand Nature Reserve in South Africa, Ebony Lodge provides guests with access to 45,000 acres of an incredible wildlife sanctuary that’s renowned for its high concentrations of big game and frequent leopard sightings.

Seychelles

With its picture-perfect cerulean waters and soft, sandy shores framed by palm trees and giant boulders, the Seychelles archipelago may very well be paradise on earth. In 1881, when a British General travelled to Praslin, the second largest of Seychelles’ 115 islands, he was certain he found the Garden of Eden - the towering Coco De Mer tree, with its giant, suggestively-shaped seeds, had to be the Tree of Knowledge.

The islands’ granite mountains do go back a long time. These ancient fragments of continental crust were once part of the supercontinent Gondwana, and now sit 1,600 km (1,000 mi) off the coast of East Africa. The Seychelles’ Inner Islands are the world’s only oceanic granitic islands, and its flat, coral, Outer Islands remain mostly untouched. The most well known Outer Island is Aldabra. One of the largest atolls in the world, it’s home to over 150,000 giant tortoises and abundant marine life that thrives on the surrounding reefs.

As for the Inner Islands, Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue draw the most visitors, lined with beautiful beaches, secret coves, and small towns offering a glimpse into Creole culture. Ninety percent of the Seychellois people live on Mahé. Independent since 1976, the islanders are a mix of East African, Malagasy, Indian, Chinese, and European heritage. In Victoria, the capital and cultural center, locals come together selling colorful cotton clothes, jewelry, mangoes, bananas, avocados, fresh fish, coconut oil, and aromatic spices in the lively open market.

Your Stay: Four Seasons Seychelles

A gentle ocean breeze floats up the granite hillside and into your tree-house villa, reminding you to take it slow. Whether it’s just the two of you, or the extended family, spend days lounging by your private pool and playing in the turquoise waters of Petite Anse bay, or find bliss at the hilltop spa, before a sunset meal on a deserted beach. Visa & Entry Requirements

SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa strictly enforces entry and exit requirements and other immigration laws. Failure to observe these requirements may result in the traveler being denied entry, detained, deported, or deemed inadmissible to enter South Africa in the future.

Please visit the Department of Home Affairs website for the most up to date entry and exit requirements.

Two Consecutive Blank Visa Pages: South Africa requires travelers to have two consecutive completely blank visa pages in their passports upon every arrival in South Africa. ENTRY WILL BE DENIED if you do not have two consecutive blank visa pages in your passport. This does not include the endorsement pages.

Immunizations: Travelers entering South Africa from WHO-designated countries with risk of yellow fever virus (YFV) transmission must present their current and valid International Certificate of Vaccination as approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) (“yellow card”). See the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s South Africa page.

You may read more here on the U.S. State Department website.

BOTSWANA
A passport with at least six months of validity remaining is required. U.S. citizens are permitted stays up to 90 days total within a 12-month period without a visa. The total stay permitted for each visit is recorded on the entry stamp by Botswana immigration officials and may be less than 90 days. Travelers who attempt to enter Botswana with a temporary passport must have a visa to enter. Visas cannot be obtained upon arrival in Botswana, and U.S. citizens without a visa in a temporary passport will face fines and long administrative delays.

Vaccinations: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if entering from a country where yellow fever is endemic. The Government of Botswana does not require other vaccinations. See the CDC’s web site for additional information.

ZIMBABWE
You need a passport, visa, return ticket, and adequate funds to cover your intended stay in order to enter Zimbabwe. If you are traveling to Zimbabwe for tourism, business, or transit, you may obtain a visa at the airports or other border ports-of-entry. There is currently no option of getting a Zimbabwean tourist visa in advance through the Zimbabwean Embassy in Washington. Extensions of the 30-day and 45-day visas are possible and require visiting the Zimbabwe Immigration Office's public window. Travelers who intend to engage in any non-tourism related activity require a visa in advance of entry. Contact the Department of Immigration of Zimbabwe for further details and information on other types of visas and entry permits.

If you are planning to arrive to Zimbabwe via South Africa, please ensure that you have at least 6 blank pages in your passport. South Africa requires two clean, consecutive pages for each transit through South Africa. You will need two pages to transit South Africa in each direction, and two pages to enter Zimbabwe. South African officials take this requirement very seriously and will turn you around if you do not have sufficient pages.

Zimbabwe has implemented measures to stem the flow of U.S. dollars from the country. Tourists and visitors who do not have bank accounts in Zimbabwe should:

Bring cash sufficient for the duration of your trip; especially $1 and $5 bills, which are used more often than local currency; the importation of any currency into Zimbabwe by travelers is not restricted. However, all travelers are encouraged to complete a Customs Declaration Form (Form 47) and declare the currency in their possession at the time of entry.
Note that the amount of currency you are allowed to possess when leaving Zimbabwe without authorization in the departure lounge of an airport or any other port is a total of in any currency or combination of currencies or in bond notes, unless declared/documented upon entry; Prepay expenses such as hotels, flights and tours by credit or debit card. Very few places accept international credit cards.

Tipping Guide

Tipping during your holiday is not compulsory. If, however, you want to tip because you have received good service, we have enclosed a brief guideline to assist you:

Currency: We advise clients to take spending money in the form of US Dollar cash, as this is favored on most excursions for tips, drinks and curios. Credit cards are generally accepted at hotels, lodges and a few safari camps. The Vat rate is currently 18%.

Transfers: We recommend about US$10 per transfer for the driver per movement.

Touring (excluding Camp/Game Lodge) Driver and/or Guides: For half day tours we recommend about US$20 and for a full day tour we recommend US$30 per day.

Safari Guides/Trackers at Game Lodges: We recommend US$40 per room per day for the guide and US$20 per room per day for the tracker.

Porterage: We recommend about US$5 per guest per movement.

Hotel/Guest House/Game Lodge Staff: We recommend about US$40 per room per day for hotel staff i.e. housekeeping, etc. In some instances where you are allocated a butler or dedicated waiter for the duration of your stay at a specific property, you could tip about UD$20 per room per day.

Restaurants/Hotels: 10 - 15% is customary on meal accounts if you are satisfied with the service. For bigger groups of 10 people or more, some restaurants charge a mandatory service fee to the final bill.

Health Advisories

Malaria is prevalent in parts of Southern Africa. We recommend taking anti-malarial tablets.

The most important defenses against malaria are:

  • Apply insect repellent to exposed skin.
  • Wear long-sleeved cotton clothing from dusk into the evening.
  • Tabard and Peaceful Sleep are commonly used insect repellents.

Always check the latest recommendations with your travel clinic or doctor.
