Saudade is a uniquely Portuguese word to describe a deep longing for something. It’s a sensation with no easy translation, but you can hear it in the soulful voice of a fado musician, detect it in the vibrant colors of mosaics, or even savor it in a glass of sweet port wine. However you perceive it, you’ll already be feeling wistful saudade for your next trip to Portugal before boarding your flight back home.

Drinking Port wine in Porto is as unforgettable an experience as drinking Champagne in Paris, but just like venturing out into the Champagne region of France, it’s worth going to the scenset. That would be the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, best known for its fortified Port wines, although you’ll also taste red, white, and even green wines. River cruises are the ideal way for traveling between wineries or quintas, taking in the views with a glass in hand.
This 19th-century manor sits high on a hill overlooking vine-covered terraces with the Douro river gently flowing at its feet. It has been beautifully restored, with contemporary interiors reflecting both the region's rich heritage and the brand's design values. Spacious and comfortable rooms, suites and villas set within flourishing kitchen gardens and vineyards, seasonal food and exquisite wines from the valley, and a stunning spa await to lift your spirits and bring joy to your soul.

On your way to Lisbon, stop in the university town of Coimbra for a bit of sightseeing and lunch!
Touring and lunch are at your leisure. A representative and your driver can provide lunch recommendations.
On the banks of the river Mondego, Coimbra is famous for its University, the oldest in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe, which over time has shaped its image to become "the city of students".
The university, founded in the 13th Century, was made into a World Heritage site by UNESCO in a classification that also includes Rua da Sofia and the upper part of the city. It's well worth climbing its tower, which houses the bells that signal the start and end of classes, in order to appreciate the superb 360º view of Coimbra. But there is much to see at ground level, too: the Pátio das Escolas courtyard, the Sala dos Capelos hall where the most important ceremonies are held, the Chapel of São Miguel with an imposing Baroque organ and the Joanine Library, which has more than 300,000 works dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries arranged in beautiful gilt-covered bookcases. The buildings occupy the place of the Palace where the first Kings of Portugal lived, when they made the city the capital of the kingdom.
There are several monuments from those times that display the splendor of Romanesque art. In the shopping area and area of historic cafés in the City Centre, visitors really must see the Monastery of Santa Cruz, which houses the tomb of the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, and on the other bank, the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, recovered and rescued from the waters of the river that invaded it over the centuries.

Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, although it was practically rebuilt from scratch after a 1755 earthquake. The only neighborhood to survive was the Alfama district, where cobbled streets and the sounds of fado music recall a nostalgic past. Throughout the rest of Lisbon, new restaurants and bars continue to reinvent the seaside city, often by serving modern takes on traditional tasca cuisine like fresh seafood, seasonal produce, and local wine.
Situated in the heart of this noble, bohemian and inspiring city, where tradition meets irreverence at every corner, the Bairro Alto is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, and a pioneer when it comes to 5-star luxury boutique hotels in Portugal.
Today, you have the choice between two activities. The first keeps you in Lisbon and involves a fun insight into Portuguese culture through a cooking class. The second option is to embark on a full-day trip to the ancient town of Sintra.
Join skilled local chefs as they guide you through the vibrant tapestry of Portuguese flavors and techniques. Set in a charming kitchen, this hands-on experience invites you to master the art of crafting traditional dishes, from savory Bacalhau à Brás to sweet Pastéis de Nata. Learn the secrets behind the perfect blend of spices and the cultural significance of each dish, ensuring you not only savor the taste but also understand the story behind every bite.
