You will witness and participate in one of the most meaningful experiences in the Andes, a Payment to the Earth. The basis of the Inca worldview was Pachamama, the Earth Mother. She was the source of life. Without her, there would be hunger and death which is why the Pachamama or goddess of fertility was worshiped. The payments to the earth consisted of thanking the gods of nature for fertility and asking for their blessing for the coming year's crops.

Disembark the train and hike the last portion of the Inca Trail with your guide and porter, passing the marvelous ruins of Wiñay Wayna on your way to the Sun Gate.
You will have a mostly flat walk to the Sun Gate, from which you have your first view of Machu Picchu! The last 45 minutes down from the Sun Gate provide many opportunities to take more photos of Machu Picchu from this unique vantage point. The overall hike is approx. 6-7 hours with moderate elevation gains. There is no better way to come upon this ancient city in the clouds than to hike the path of the Incas!

Before leaving Cusco for the Sacred Valley, there will be a short visit to the ruins of Sacsayhuaman to learn about the area's human history. Construction is believed to have begun here during the reign of Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century. It's said that over 20,000 people moved stones from nearby quarries over 12 miles to the hilltop in Cusco. The methods used by the Incas to build Sacsayhuaman with such large stones remain a mystery, adding to the intrigue of this archaeological site and the Inca civilization.
