Marrakech

Founded almost 1000 years ago, Marrakech beckons with an irresistible blend of ancient mystique and modern vibrancy. A sensory symphony unfolds in the historic medina, where narrow alleyways lead to Djemaa el-Fna, a UNESCO World Heritage site and pulsating heart of the city. Here, vibrant souks burst with the colors of handwoven textiles, aromatic spices, and masterfully crafted leather goods, creating an immersive marketplace experience.

🍲
Restaurant Recommendations

Here are some of our favorite restaurants in Marrakech.

  • Dar Yacout is a landmark of Marrakesh. It was one of the first tables d’hôte, created more than 20 years ago in the medina. The decor is enchanting with its private rooms and breath-taking panoramic view from the terrace overlooking the medina and the Koutoubia mosque of Marrakesh - Dar Yacout is one of our top picks for traditional cuisine.
  • NOMAD is known for its sleek sand-coloured sofas and black-and-white tiled tables. The menu is fearlessly modern, featuring eclectic twists on classics such as calamari marinated in cumin served with a dash of spicy harissa or saffron-scented date cake with salted caramel ice-cream.
  • Le Jardin is a green-hued oasis with an overarching canopy of banana leaves, bamboo and palms. Order up a light Moroccan salad or club sandwich, accompanied by an orange and beet smoothie or a milky date shake.
  • Latitude 33 serves up sophisticated Medi-Moroccan fusion cuisine, which includes ambitious offerings such as cream cheese briouat (pastries) with strawberry puree, and chicken tagine with caramelised apples and thyme honey.
  • Gastro MK is famous for its fusion Euro-Moroccan cuisine and is one of the medina’s finest restaurants. As there are only 20 seats, pre-booking is essential and a deposit is required. As a nod to the owner's English background, you can also enjoy a full English Afternoon Tea here!
  • La Maison Arabe set the benchmark for Marrakech fine dining. The menu is exclusively Moroccan, offering heartwarming classics such as tanjia alongside more inventive dishes like saffron-infused lamb chops.
  • Chez Lamine Hadj is where it gets real. You come here for an authentic Marrakech experience of a famous local dish: the Tanjia. No reservation required.
  • La Grande Table Marocaine - located at the Royal Mansour and described as the best restaurant in Marrakesh, this famous restaurant is fruit of the chef’s bond with the Kingdom.
  • L'Italien Located at the La Mamounia, you'll find curvaceous armchairs, crimson fabrics, red, blue and green stained-glass windows and silk brocatelle fabric on the walls by Maison Prelle – with a proud three-hundred-year history. The dishes served by the Chef are equal to the setting – delicate, feminine and sunny.
  • Le Marocain Located at the La Mamounia, this restaurant transports you to the heart of Moroccan hospitality. The watchwords are refinement, generosity and sharing. Enjoy a tajine on the cool terrace, in a romantic setting, with candles and the gentle sound of water from the ponds and the three fountains.

This is a recommendation only.

💫
Rooftop Restaurants

The sun terraces offer unique views across the Spice Square and medina rooftops

👣
Neighborhoods to explore

Paris is a great city for independent exploration, with so many different neighborhoods offering something different - here are some of our favorites:

  • Montparnasse, once a haven for artists, now blends historic cafes with modern shopping and the Musée Bourdelle's sculptures. Its transformation includes chic boutiques along bustling avenues, culminating in spectacular city views from the Tour Montparnasse's panoramic bar-restaurant.
  • Latin Quarter epitomizes Parisian charm with its Seine-side cafes and scholarly vibe from students. Steer clear of the crowded tourist spots to discover the Panthéon, home to the remains of France's intellectual giants, and the medieval wonders of the Musée de Cluny, including its ancient Roman baths. For tranquility, visit the Arènes de Lutèce, a park within a Roman amphitheatre's ruins, and don't miss the vibrant street market on rue Mouffetard.
  • Le Marais is filled with narrow streets known for its breathtaking architecture and buzzy vibe. For the artistic, head to the Musée Picasso and history-themed Musée Carnavalet, both set in former stately homes. There are plenty of art galleries and quaint places to eat under the stone arches of Place des Vosges.
  • Montmartre, nestled in Paris's northern slopes, blends village charm with artistic legacy, resisting the tourist tide. Here, locals shop, dine with views, sip cocktails, and engage with contemporary art at Kadist Art Foundation, preserving its unique spirit.
  • Belleville-Menilmontant, is quickly becoming a hotspot for nightlife and art. Bars, alongside fresh art galleries, signal a vibrant young art scene. Don't miss the scenic Parc de Belleville and Place St Marthe's relaxed, global atmosphere, offering diverse cuisines.

Passages Couverts Parisiens

Largely dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, the covered passages of Paris were constructed to serve as shopping arcades filled with bookstores, independent boutiques, and eateries. They are great for wandering through and finding hidden gems! A few of our favorites are:

  • Galerie Vivienne Paris is the most luxurious one! Constructed in the 1820s near the Palais Royal in Paris' 2nd arrondissement, Galerie Vivienne stands out as one of Paris' most exquisite Covered Passages, celebrated for the sophistication of its shops. If you have the opportunity to explore just one Parisian gallery, this is the one - Google Maps link here.
  • Passage du Grand Cerf Paris is a hidden gem! Built in 1825 on the site of the Hôtel du Grand Cerf (where it took its name), the interior is home to many artisan shops and high-quality jewelry boutiques - Google Maps link here
  • Passage Jouffroy is one of my personal favorites for the artwork! There are some wonderful artists with shops there, and outlets that specialize in photography and Indian imported stamps; it's worth a visit - Google Maps link here.
  • Passage Verdeau is great for stamps and antiques! There are also some rare books to be found. This passage is very close to Passage Jouffroy - Google Maps link here.

Street Art in Paris

Paris, an open-air museum, showcases a vibrant tapestry of street art from Montmartre to Butte-aux-Cailles. Graffiti, stencils, and murals turn the city into a canvas for urban creativity. For a unique view of Paris, explore these districts known for their street art:

  • 13th arrondissement is best for massive murals! Near the Nationale metro station, Rue Jeanne d'Arc, and Boulevard Vincent Auriol, discover over a dozen frescoes. Notable are Shepard Fairey's works, featuring the motto ‘Liberté, égalité, fraternité’, and a large mosaic by an artist, inspired by the TV series House - Google Maps link here.

In Paris' east, areas like Oberkampf, Belleville, and Ménilmontant are hotspots for street art, with projects by several artists and the Mur Oberkampf refreshing facades biweekly at 107 Rue Oberkampf. Highlights include a mural on Rue de Ménilmontant and evolving art at Pavillon Carré de Baudoin.
