Montenegro knows how to deliver the glamor – with a private yacht, Michelin-starred chefs and astounding views.
Picture a sprawling Venetian-style palace overlooking an idyllic bay. Add private sandy beaches, an Italian restaurant helmed by a Michelin-starred chef, and a gorgeous, high-tech spa that blends Chinese medicine and Western technology. Welcome to One&Only Portonovi in the tiny country of Montenegro.
Boka Bay, where this new resort is located, is a sight to behold: shimmering waters, dramatic mountains, and a coastline fringed by lush forest and ancient towns – all best explored aboard the resort’s private yacht. Diving instructors will continue the guided tour below the water surface, where sprawling tunnel and cave structures were once used for concealing submarines. On land, wine enthusiasts can sample vranac, the region’s indigenous grape variety.
Though this lesser-known corner of the Adriatic is now marketed as the New Riviera, that’s a bit of a misnomer, as Medieval towns and fortresses dot the coastline.
The glamour isn't new either. Between the 1960s and 1980s, the likes of Orson Welles, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, and Sophia Loren frequented the former royal residences of Sveti Stefan, a fortified islet that in 2012 reopened as the Aman Sveti Stefan luxury resort.
