Giving back has never felt, or looked, so good.
At Joali, a stunning resort on Muravandhoo Island, there's no shortage of glamour, with restaurants designed by world-renowned interior architects, and opulent, 500 sqm villas complete with private infinity pools, walk-in closets, butlers, and valet service.
There's also the chance to contribute to the local community, and probably not in the way you'd expect.
In amongst the massages and snorkeling trips, there's a slightly more unusual offering at the Joali resort – regular blood donation drives. The aim is to help alleviate the shortage of blood for transfusions in the Maldives, and it's just one example of the resort's overall commitment to having a positive impact on the island community.
Designed and masterminded by one woman, Esin Gural Argat, one of Turkey’s most prominent entrepreneurs, Joali is especially keen on female empowerment. Local women are hired on all levels, from beach cleaners to senior management. Alongside this, the resort also funds volunteers at a number of local schools to help girls gain skills needed for employment.
You'll catch glimpses of art around the resort, inside the villas, and even beneath the waves. A collection of extraordinary works by 13 international artists supports Joali's claim to fame as the first and only art resort in the Maldives.
An especially fascinating art trail, curated by Istanbul-based female collective, No LaB, portrays a timely geopolitical and environmental message.
