Nairobi is the capital of Kenya and East Africa’s most cosmopolitan city, with a vibrant population of 4.5 million. Unique to the city is the proximity of Nairobi National Park, a true wilderness area juxtaposed against the larger urban metropolis. It is the only national park like it in the world and a real embodiment of the human-wildlife conflicts that challenge many African communities who must learn to cohabitate with wildlife on their doorstep.

In the northern frontier of Kenya lies the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, an area of 850,000 acres of pristine wilderness in the Mathews Range. The savannah plains of the conservancy are home to elephant, leopard, reticulated giraffe, wild dog and kudu in ever increasing numbers. This remote and dramatic landscape is also home to the local Samburu people whose age-old traditions, including the famous “singing wells,” are as much a part of the fabric of this land as the wildlife.
The conservancy is itself community-owned and is one of the best examples of indigenous communities building sustainability for people and wildlife through truly unique and experiential safari experiences. Camel supported safaris are very popular as are walking safaris and visits to the amazing community run Reteti elephant sanctuary. To the eastern side of the conservancy is the new Sera conservancy and rhino project and really one of the last frontiers of conservation before heading towards Lake Turkana and the northern frontier.

Activities include day and night game drives, horseback riding, walks and bikes, optional fly camping, a seasonal water slide, village visits, the giraffe viewing platform, and of course the wonderful Reteti Elephant Sanctuary.
One of the most authentic cultural experiences to be had in the country is to visit the "singing wells." Especially in the dry season, the local herders visit "wells" that they have dug in the dry river bed, sometimes five men deep and each belonging to a specific family. They then sing to their livestock who recognize the song and know where and in what order to come to drink. In keeping with the whole community and conservation ethos, these same wells are then utilized at night by local wildlife, including elephants and leopards.

Located about a four hour drive and 250 km (150 mi) southeast of a major city, Amboseli National Park is well known for its herds of big tusked elephants under the imposing backdrop of the highest free-standing mountain in the world, Mt Kilimanjaro. The 151 km2 (58 mi2) park is a fragile ecosystem with the (usually) dry lake bed at its heart. Surrounding the lake bed and salt flats are beautiful Acacia tortillis woodland and grassy savannah that attract herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle alongside the famed elephants. It is possible to see all the predators but, being a national park, night drives are not permitted.
Local tribes live in settlements around Amboseli, and these pastoralists bring their herds to water in and around the park. The name 'Amboseli' is indeed derived from a word meaning 'salty dust'. Today, it is one of Kenya’s most popular national parks.
Welcome to Angama Amboseli, an intimate lodge in the heart of Kimana Sanctuary. Kenya’s first community-owned conservancy, the sanctuary is renowned for its lush landscape and remarkable density of wildlife – along with its famed backdrop, Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Set within a Fever Tree Forest where some of Africa’s last super tuskers roam – elephants with tusks so large they drag along the ground as they walk – Angama Amboseli is a gentle start or finish to any East African safari.
The main Guest Area offers flexible indoor-outdoor dining with a baraza to wind down the days by the fire, telling stories with a drink in hand or marshmallows for roasting. The nearby Studios house a Safari Shop, Games Room, Art Gallery, Weaving Studio and a Photographic Studio – perfect for capturing Amboseli’s iconic scenset.
Angama Amboseli
Family Suite
Two sets of family suites are available, comprised of two standard suites connected by a secure interleading passageway. Each set of family suites can sleep up to two adults and four children.
Children of all ages are most welcome here – with a Games Room and many child-friendly activities, not to mention staff who delight in taking care of young guests.
Inclusions: All guided safaris in Kimana Sanctuary & Amboseli National Park. Guided walking safaris in Kimana Sanctuary. All meals and drinks (excluding French Champagne & reserve wines). With exclusive traversing rights and unrestricted game viewing, the best time to view the mountain is in the early morning on a pyjama safari. Kimana Sanctuary is home to eland, buffalo, reedbuck, giraffe, zebra, warthogs in their hundreds, along with leopard, cheetah, serval and many birds of prey — offering a remarkable density of wildlife for the ecosystem.
Kimana Sanctuary is a haven for nature lovers and photographers alike as you drive through the savanna woodland and Fever Tree Forests, amongst the diverse wildlife, plentiful bird species and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Encounter the last genetic links to Africa’s Super Tusker elephants who enter the park along a centuries-old migratory path. Traditionally, game drives take place twice a day, but at Angama Amboseli we offer you tailor-made safari options at any time of day. Meander through the Kimana Sanctuary on a game drive, as a half- or full-day excursion.
Derived from the Maasai word for 'salty dust', Amboseli National Park is just a 45-minute drive from the lodge which guests can enjoy on a half- or full-day excursion with a picnic lunch. This is one of the best places in Africa to see huge herds of elephants marching single file across dusty pans or having a “bath” in the dry lake beds. In the savanna and woodlands, you may spot lion or cheetah, while in the wetlands, hippo, flamingo and some of its other 400-odd species of birdlife can be found.
Angama Amboseli’s Photographic Studio is a hub for creativity, storytelling, education and collaboration. Offering services like photo sessions, camera rentals and tutorials to enhance your photography skills – it provides the finest means to capture lasting memories of your safari adventure. Capturing stunning images of Amboseli and Kimana is an enjoyable and accessible experience for everyone on safari, thanks to the breathtaking scenset, plentiful wildlife and our trained guides who are attuned to your photographic requirements.
Led by an expert Guide and a member of the security team, who have incredible knowledge of the terrain, flora and fauna of this little oasis, this is an enchanting way to experience a safari. Follow animal pathways and tracks, get close to the resident eland, zebra and giraffe and observe the smaller inhabitants like antlions and dung beetles up close. End your walk with a charming breakfast under a Fever Tree, before driving back to the lodge.
Those interested in a behind-the-scenes look at conservation work can join Angama's partner, the Big Life Foundation, for half- or full-day experiences. Activities include ranger patrol demonstrations, a visit to the school, camera trap monitoring and/or training school visit and learning about the importance of generating benefits for communities from protecting centuries-old wildlife corridors and reducing human-wildlife conflict.
In addition to your safari adventures through Kimana Sanctuary, set aside moments for relishing the peace and tranquillity around the lodge. Catch your breath and allow the space to feel like your own personal sanctuary. Unwind in your rocking chair as you seek out a glimpse of the ‘Shy Mountain’, enjoy a workout or an indulgent massage in the privacy of your Guest Suite, or take refuge from the day's heat in the Pool.

The History
Founded in 1977 by Dr Dame Daphne Sheldrick DBE, in memory of her late husband, famous naturalist and founding Warden of Tsavo East National Park, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust claims a rich and deeply rooted family history in wildlife and conservation.
Since the death of her husband, Daphne, and her family, lived and worked in the Nairobi National Park where they built The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and its pioneering Orphans’ Project into the global force for wildlife conservation that is today. Daphne's daughter and her family continued the work for many years, and since Daphne’s passing continues the mission with passion and vigor ably supported by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust team.
Nairobi Nursery
The Trust is best known for its work on elephants, and although the Orphans project is the heart and soul of the Trust, the organization has now expanded to veterinary units, anti-poaching units, community projects and the saving habitat initiative.
