Your Journey to Barcelona & Florence

Begin your journey in Barcelona. It’s clear from the moment you step foot in Barcelona that it’s unlike any other Spanish city. The boulevards are wider, the architecture is quirkier, and, if you have an ear for languages, you may hear that the locals are speaking Catalan, not Spanish. Gaudi’s masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia, is just one of his architectural gems scattered about the city.

Then proceed to Florence, a living museum that is home to some of the greatest architecture, museums, and galleries. Then retreat into the tranquil rolling valleys of the beautiful Tuscan winelands, enjoying the fabulous wines of Montepulciano, Chianti and Montalcino, truffle tasting in San Miniato, exploring historical towns and savouring fantastic Italian cuisine.

Restaurant Recommendations: Barcelona

There's no shortage of great food in Barcelona, and some of the best meals are at the bar you stumble into by surprise.

Here's a list of some top places to eat.

  • Cocina Hemanos Torres: The well-known Torres brothers present their innovative gastronomic proposal located in the neighborhood of Les Corts. We can enjoy a nice evening while the chef cooks for us on one of the 3 islands.
  • Atempo: Atempo offers a new gastronomic format merging the waiter’s trade with the passion and creativity of the chefs. An offer based on products with soul, in an intimate and cozy environment.
  • Hoffman: Hoffman is the restaurant run by the person responsible for the prestigious cookery school with the same name. With a Michelin star, their menu presents modern creations that have Mediterranean-Catalan and French haute cuisine as a starting point. Desserts are simply spectacular. It is essential to book in advance.
  • Can Ramonet: Paella is perhaps the quintessential Spanish dish, and the best place to eat it is near the coast. Head to the Barceloneta neighborhood near the water and try one of their famous paellas (remember in Spain, paella is traditionally lunch food, not dinner!).
  • Solomillo: Indulge all your darkest carnivorous desires at this meat-lovers’ paradise, where the name of the restaurant is the same as your order (solomillo means “sirloin steak”). This is the best steak in Barcelona and the menu is customizable to your liking.
  • Berbena: Few tourists have heard of Berbena. Inside, there are daily batches of home-baked bread that smell like your grandma’s kitchen, comfort food like hearty beef with wine stew and gooey slices of Spanish omelet, and platters of locally sourced cheese and charcuteries.
  • Bocanariz: Visit this unassuming wine bar which has a selection of hundreds of bottles, from Cataluña, around Spain, and the world. Paired with some small bites to snack on, it's the perfect Spanish bar experience.
  • La Pepita: A more casual eatery with a fun vibe and delicious menu to accompany it. It's always filled with locals, a good sign for any place to eat.

Please let us know if you'd like reservations.

Coffee shop recommendations

Barcelona's café culture is thriving, blending the city's love for tradition with a growing appreciation for modern, third-wave coffee.

Below are some of our favorite picks:

  • Nomad Coffee started as a pop-up coffee project but quickly grew into one of Barcelona’s most respected coffee roasters and shops. It’s known for its high-quality beans, expertly brewed by skilled baristas. Nomad is a must-visit for anyone serious about coffee.
  • Satan's Coffee Corner, with a bold name and a no-compromise approach to quality, has established itself as a cornerstone of Barcelona's specialty coffee scenset. It offers a variety of brewing methods and a selection of homemade food in a distinctly hip atmosphere.
  • Onna Coffee focuses on beans from Costa Rica and emphasizes quality and traceability. The café combines the warmth of traditional Barcelona with a modern approach to coffee brewing. It's a cozy spot in the Gràcia neighborhood that feels both welcoming and innovative.
  • Morrow Coffee, known for its minimalist interior and exceptional coffee, is a haven for anyone seeking a peaceful spot to enjoy a well-crafted cup.
  • Federal Café is inspired by the café culture of Australia and New Zealand, offering a spacious and bright environment perfect for enjoying a leisurely coffee, brunch, or a spot of work. Their coffee is excellent, and the food menu complements it perfectly.

Florence

In many ways, visiting Florence today feels like a trip directly into the Renaissance. The energy that inspired the likes of great artists is still palpable, from the grandiose pink and green facade of the Duomo to an unembellished plate of Florentine steak with potatoes. It’s easy to get engrossed by the art and shopping in the historic center, but walk across the Ponte Vecchio to find Florence’s most authentic osterias and enotecas on the left bank of the river.

Arrive at your hotel and settle in; the first afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure, armed with local recommendations.

Where to eat

A few of our favourite places to dine in Florence are:

  • Cibrèo has an informal, fashionable atmosphere.
  • Il Santo Bevitore, this restaurant offers home-style cooking, as well as a touch of creativity in the evening.
  • Caffè dell'Oro has an elegant atmosphere of the Tuscan and Mediterranean dishes takes pride of the place.
  • Omero is a Trattoria run by the same family for 30 years with typical regional cuisine.
  • ‘INO serves probably the best Panini in Florence, known for exceptional flavours!
  • Buca dell’Orafo offers traditional Tuscany dishes in a surrounding that reproduces the typical atmosphere of an ancient Florentine restaurant.
  • Trattoria Sostanza is famous for its cuisine, since 1869. The concept is to eat by sharing two long marble tables, sitting next to whoever happens.
  • Cammillo, the food here is deeply embedded in Florence’s culinary DNA as well as family-passed down traditions.
  • Regina Bistecca isn't a secret, nor is it tucked away in some off-the-beaten path alleyway in Florence. It is simply the city's premier spot to indulge in the city's iconic dish of bistecca alla Fiorentina.
  • Vini E Vecchi Sapori is a tiny, crowded and noisy traditional Florentine haunt that is the definition of rustic. The “No pizza, no cappuccino, no ice, no takeaway” notices say it all.
  • Zeb is a small, sleek, diner-style restaurant serving delicious traditional food on a changing menu in contemporary surroundings where a mother-and-son team prepare, serve, and pour wine.
  • Gurdulù, now under new management and a new chef have morphed this eaterie from a high-end gourmet restaurant into a deli/takeaway/eat-in hybrid. The sophisticated retro decor is still intact, but both the vibe and the menu choice are more relaxed these days.
  • Osteria dell'Enoteca is a contemporary space within the context of an ancient Oltrarno townhouse, offering seasonal Tuscan fare with a modern twist.

Fine dining

A few of our favorite places for fine dining are:

  • Ristorante Santa Elisabetta in the heart of the historic center of Florence, is a 2* Michelin-star restaurant offering minimalist, essential, pure cuisine.
  • Essenziale: As its name suggests, Essenziale, on the Piazza del Cestello, has only the essentials: loud music, bright lights, stone floors, and bare tables save for water glasses and folded napkins. There’s nowhere to hide, and nothing masking the excellent food. Menus are based on seasonal, regional, and local ingredients; add the odd global influence, accomplished technique, and real flair into the mix and the results are always interesting—sometimes sensational. (13-min drive/13-min walk)
  • Regina Bistecca: Regina Bistecca isn't a secret, nor is it tucked away in some off-the-beaten path alleyway in Florence. It is simply the city's premier spot to indulge in the city's iconic dish of bistecca alla Fiorentina. The steaks here are expertly handled and prepared one-way, very rare, as it is meant to be consumed. (4-min walk)

Florence has some wonderful coffee shops, a few of our favorites are:

Their scenset location is in the historic center, making it a great stop during a day of sightseeing.

Its pastries are as much of an attraction as its espresso, and the ambiance brings you back to the glamour of early 20th-century Italy.

Apericena

This is one of our favorite things to do in Italy, combining "aperitivo" and "cena" (dinner). There are certain bars that offer a fair amount of bites to eat with drinks, either free of charge, with a small fee or à la carte, depending on whether you are there for an aperitif. It's a way to experience the city like a local!

Places where this is typically offered:

🍷
Wine bars

A few of our favorites are:

  • Le Volpi e L’Uva: A great pre-dinner stop! Tucked away off the Ponte Vecchio is one of the most revered wine bars in the country. Part shop, part bar and local hangout, Le Volpi pours and sells bottles that uniquely represent the Italian wine landscape, highlighting passionate producers. (8-min walk)
  • La Terrazza: On the rooftop terrace of Hotel Continentale is one of the best views over Florence... and also a fantastic spot for a pre-dinner glass of wine or cocktail! Regardless of where you end up this evening, La Terrazza is definitely worth a stop. (5-min walk)
  • Il Santino: The wine bar of Il Santo Bevitore is just a short walk from the restaurant. It's a easy-going and quaint atmosphere with seasoned sommeliers to help guide you through their wine offerings (15-min drive/11-min walk)

Day 9: Culinary Journeys in Tuscany

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the magic of Florence, but there’s so much more to Tuscany outside of the capital city. Hop in the car and the city quickly gives way to medieval villages, terracotta estates, and endless rows of vineyards. The region is renowned for its history and art, but sensual pleasures reign supreme: copious glasses of wine, simple cooking with seasonal ingredients, natural thermal baths. If you’re seeking la dolce vita, you’ll find it in Tuscany.

👩‍🍳
09:00 - San Gimignano Cooking Class

This morning, travel to an iconic Tuscan city, San Gimignano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most splendid examples of a medieval walled town. It is nicknamed the 'medieval manhattan', otherwise called the 'town of the 100 towers', and it's a feast for the eyes.

Here, you will be welcomed in the charming premises of a private kitchen, in a local handpicked winery! Lace up your apron and enjoy a hands-on culinary experience. Learn the tips and secrets of making antipasti with fresh truffle, a traditional Italian first course - why not with fresh truffle, a secondo - typically meat based and, of course, dessert too!

Lunch is all'Italiano, and therefore is accompanied by delicious wines. After lunch, enjoy some time at leisure and a stroll through delightful San Gimignano. Walk through quaint cobblestone streets, discover the many tall towers, and browse the pretty shops lined by bottles of Vernaccia di San Gimignano, premium saffron, dainty hand-woven linens and precious hand-made Santa Fina pottery.

Some traditional dining eateries you may enjoy to continue your culinary adventure when you arrive back in Florence are:

🍅
Florence: traditional dining

We love these rustic Italian gems:

  • Cibrèo Trattoria is a popular trattoria serving Tuscan classics. It is often crowded, and there is no point in trying to book a table as they don’t take reservations.
  • Trattoria Cammillo is something of a Florentine institution, it's located on the south bank of the Arno by the Ponte Vecchio.
  • Vini E Vecchi Sapori is small, crowded and noisy but full of character! The “No pizza, no cappuccino, no ice, no takeaway” notices say it all. This is a place to feast on competently-prepared Florentine classics such as liver-topped crostini, pappardelle pasta with duck sauce, and peposo, a hearty, pepper-centric beef stew.

  • Visit Boboli Garden, great for an afternoon stroll! It also features five museums: the Museum of Russian Icons, the Treasury of the Grand Dukes, the Imperial and Royal Apartments, the Museum of Costume and Fashion, and the Gallery of Modern Art.
  • Enjoy a panoramic point in Florence to take some nice pictures, the best point is definitely Piazzale Michelangelo, especially at sunset time. If you enjoy being active, you can reach Piazzale Michelangelo by taking a nice walk; otherwise, you can easily reach it with a taxi!
  • Bardini Villa features beautiful Renaissance gardens above the city filled with wisteria; it's a great place to watch the sun set over Florence. There is also a working monastery you can visit.
  • The Duomo is a constituent of the Monumental Complex of Santa Maria del Fiore, joined by Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Baptistery, Santa Reparata, and the Opera del Duomo Museum. Positioned in close proximity to the cathedral, all of these attractions are accessible with a single ticket. You can also climb to the top of Cathedral dome.
  • The Baptistery of San Giovanni is one of the oldest buildings in Florence across from the Florence Cathedral. Inside, the golden mosaic ceiling is the standout piece. It's steeped in history!
