Your Italian Summer

The Italian dolce vita is difficult to describe. It is something that truly needs to be experienced first-hand. It is found in the ambient sounds of Rome's cobblestone streets, in the rows of vines of Tuscany's tranquil vineyards, reflecting in the immaculate and azure Mediterranean waters off the Amalfi Coast, and in the daily interactions with Italy's jovial citizens.

Weather

This time of year expect warm and sunny days, and pleasant evenings. The temperature hovers between 13-27°C (55-80°F) in the north, 16-27°C (60-83°F) in central Italy, and 21-30°C (70-85°F) in the south. But even though these temperatures may seem perfect, you'll want to pack the lightest layers possible, as Italy is not immune to heat waves during June.

  • Crotto Valdurino is a local tavern built partially within a cave. Open since 1882 and still run by the same family, it used to be a freezer cellar where food was stacked. Day 7: Florence for the Day
⚠️
Important

Please remember to bring your passports with you today as you will need them for security checks for some of the museums and activities.

In many ways, visiting Florence today feels like a trip directly into the Renaissance. The energy that inspired the likes of great artists is still palpable, from the grandiose pink and green facade of the Duomo to an unembellished plate of Florentine steak with potatoes. It’s easy to get engrossed by the art and shopping in the historic center, but walk across the Ponte Vecchio to find Florence’s most authentic osterias and enotecas on the left bank of the river.

If you wish to eat in Florence, a few recommendations you may enjoy are:

🍮
Restaurant recommendations: Florence

A few of our favourites are:

Traditional

  • Cibrèo Trattoria is a popular trattoria serving Tuscan classics. It is often crowded, and there is no point in trying to book a table as they don’t take reservations.
  • Trattoria Cammillo is something of a Florentine institution, it's located on the south bank of the Arno by the Ponte Vecchio.
  • Vini E Vecchi Sapori is small, crowded and noisy but full of character! The “No pizza, no cappuccino, no ice, no takeaway” notices say it all. This is a place to feast on competently-prepared Florentine classics such as liver-topped crostini, pappardelle pasta with duck sauce, and peposo, a hearty, pepper-centric beef stew.

Fine Dining

  • Essenziale: As its name suggests, Essenziale, on the Piazza del Cestello, has only the essentials: loud music, bright lights, stone floors, and bare tables save for water glasses and folded napkins. There’s nowhere to hide, and nothing masking the excellent food. Menus are based on seasonal, regional, and local ingredients; add the odd global influence, accomplished technique, and real flair into the mix and the results are always interesting—sometimes sensational. (short drive/short walk)
  • Regina Bistecca: Regina Bistecca isn't a secret, nor is it tucked away in some off-the-beaten path alleyway in Florence. It is simply the city's premier spot to indulge in the city's iconic dish of bistecca alla Fiorentina. The steaks here are expertly handled and prepared one-way, very rare, as it is meant to be consumed. (short walk)
  • Ristorante Santa Elisabetta in the heart of the historic center of Florence, is a 2* Michelin-star restaurant offering minimalist, essential, pure cuisine.
🍷
Wine bars

We love:

  • Le Volpi e L’Uva: A great pre-dinner stop! Tucked away off the Ponte Vecchio is one of the most revered wine bars in the country. Part shop, part bar and local hangout, Le Volpi pours and sells bottles that uniquely represent the Italian wine landscape, highlighting passionate producers.
  • La Terrazza: On the rooftop terrace of Hotel Continentale is one of the best views over Florence... and also a fantastic spot for a pre-dinner glass of wine or cocktail! Regardless of where you end up this evening, La Terrazza is definitely worth a stop.
  • Il Santino: The wine bar of Il Santo Bevitore is just a short walk from the restaurant. It's a easy-going and quaint atmosphere with seasoned sommeliers to help guide you through their wine offerings.
  • Enoteca Pitti Gola e Cantina: An extensive cellar of Tuscan wines paired with regional dishes on a terrace opposite Palazzo Pitti in Oltrarno.

Head back to your hotel to relax.

Day 8: Amalfi la Bella

While most of Italy is about sightseeing, there’s nothing to visit per se on the Amalfi Coast. Instead of lavish churches and ancient monuments, the rugged coastline is the sight, best enjoyed from a hilltop al fresco restaurant, the bow of a yacht, or inside your car while navigating one of the world’s most scenic drives. Amalfi is a luxurious destination with a humble past, where glitzy villas still intermingle with sleepy fishing villages and bucolic lemon orchards.

Italy is steeped in ancient history and today you will pass by one of the most well-preserved residues of it.
Pompeii was a thriving citadelle in the reigning years of the Roman empire. A center for commerce, trade, art and science. In a catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D it was buried under ash and pumice, thus preserving it to an impressive extend.

On your approximately 1hr 30min drive down to the Amalfi coast, stop for approximately 2 hours to stretch the legs and learn about this site from your private local guide.

Day 9: At Leisure

The Amalfi Coast is a heart-pleasing kaleidoscope of images and ever-changing landscapes. On your first day on the coast, take the time to just be. The Italians have a special phrase for this: "Dolce far' niente".

🥳
17:00 - Surprise

There is a surprise waiting for you at the Villa

🍨
Restaurant recommendations: Amalfi Coast

A few of our favorite places to try are:

  • Remmese Restaurant is a seaside restaurant of the private beach club of the hotel, offering impeccable views and high-end cuisine.
  • Da Costantino is a fantastic option for great pizzas and amazing timeless Italian hospitality.
  • Donna Rosa is a restaurant created by two grand-daughters; Erika and Rosida who bring to visitors the art of cooking and love of hospitality, as taught to them by their loving nonna.
  • La Sponda is one for a special occasion. Surrender to the capable hands of Gennaro Russo for a true culinary journey through the Amalfi.
  • La Serra is a 1 Michelin-star restaurant which is a must-try during your visit.
  • Da Gemma: Grilled meats, octopus & Salerno-region pasta dishes at an upscale venue with an expansive terrace.
  • Ristorante L'Abside: Antipasti, pasta & mains with a seafood focus, at a charming trattoria with tables on a square.
  • Lido Azzurro: Ask the locals about their favourite place to eat fish on the costiera, and many will come up with the name Lido Azzuro, a busy restaurant with a terrace overlooking Amalfi’s port. Chef Antonio Pisani (aka ‘Bijoux’) has been serving unfussy fish and seafood dishes based on the catch of the day landed by the local boats since for decades.
  • Il Glicine: The wisteria-draped terrace of the Hotel Santa Caterina is the loveliest dinner spot in Amalfi, and chef Giuseppe Stanzione’s stellar food well lives up to the setting; this is a place for a special treat.

There are so many fantastic places, so let us know if you'd like more recommendations.

🏖️
Beach clubs

We love these places:

  • La Conca del Sogno is fantastic beach club on the water for lunch and a day under the Mediterranean sun! It's also a hotspot for VIPs who moor their yachts just offshore.
  • Beach Club Arienzo is an exclusive beach club just east of Positano.
  • One Fire Beach Club, nestled in Praiano, is the only locale with sunset views, One Fire is one of the the hottest beach clubs. Renowned for its lively "melon time" with DJ sets and theatrical watermelon slicing, it's the ultimate party destination.
  • La Scogliera is great for relaxing on the beach and staying to enjoy a beautiful sunset from the lounge bar by night. There is a VIP terrace and a Mediterranean restaurant, both overlooking the sea.
  • Maya Beach Experience is a luxurious beach club with breathtaking views of Capri. With a stunning backdrop of stone quarries and limestone cliffs, the clear turquoise waters seduce swimmers while the saltwater pools offer guests an alternative to the sea.

The day has been left for you to relax.

Day 15: Off to Rome!

With an uncanny sense of foresight, Rome was first called the Eternal City 2,000 years ago. Even by today’s standards, it’s still grand in a way that few other places can compare to. The buildings are dilapidated and the roads disheveled, but chaos has never looked so exquisite. The cobblestone streets may be nonsensical, but a wrong turn always leads to an unexpected delight: an intimate piazza, a baroque fountain, or a homey trattoria serving house-made cacio e pepe.

👟
Exploring Rome

Rome is wonderful to explore on foot, we recommend you pick a direction and walk to see daily Roman life in action!

  • If you are into vintage designer finds check out Mercato Monti Urban Market, where you'll find handcrafted accessories and other treasures from local artisans. Nearby Via del Boschetto is lined with chic boutiques selling clothing and jewellery from independent designers
  • Giardino degli Aranci is great to survey the Eternal City in citrus-shaded splendour from the heights of the Aventine Hill.
  • For a spot of more secret sightseeing, peek through the keyhole of nearby Villa del Priorato di Malta for a hedge-framed glimpse of St Peter’s Dome.
  • Villa Doria Pamphilj is Rome's largest park, divided into manicured gardens, stretches of forest, pine groves, and sections of wild vegetation.
  • Testaccio Market in a lively central neighborhood of Rome, is full of bakeries offering freshly baked bread, stalls showcasing fresh produce, fish markets, butcher shops, and delicatessens.
  • Porta Portese is a wonderful flea market for browsing - open a Sunday. It's a great spot for finding unique treasures.
  • Pigneto is a neighborhood popular with Italian college students and thirty-somethings. It's rough around the edges but if you are interested in urban spaces and street art; it's worth checking out.
🍝
Restaurant recommendations

Some of our favorite Rome eateries are:

  • Felice a Testaccio is a simple, family, trattoria-style atmosphere. Without a doubt, one of the standard-bearers of Latium cuisine.
  • Bistrot 64 boasts the attractive, informal decor of a bistro combined with surprisingly creative and imaginative cuisine.
  • Moi is a small and decidedly smart place. A chef cooks fresh seasonal ingredients with modern techniques, which can also change daily.
  • Prati Rione Gastronomico offers a varied menu ranging from bistro to pastry, from cocktail bar to bakery; as well as a pizzeria. Well-made cuisine - the choice is limited, but the quality is tantalizing!
  • Piccolo Buco is an exceptional pizzeria where you can choose from pizza Roma, spaghetti carbonara and exotic salami.
  • Taverna dello Spuntino has a particularly striking interior. From its old tufa passageways converted into a wine cellar in the basement, to its charming dining rooms with brick-vaulted arches where hams, flasks of wine, fruit and antipasti all form an attractive display.
  • Santa Palato is a trendy yet authentic local eaterie that is sure to impress.
🍽️
Michelin-star restaurants

Some of our recommendations are:

  • Pipero is a 1-Michelin star restaurant, long-favoured by food enthusiasts in the capital, with simple dishes which are nonetheless full of character.
  • Aroma is a 1-Michelin star tribute to the city and the aromas of Mediterranean cuisine that is served here together with local specialties. The dishes are seasoned by the chef with a touch of creativity.
  • La Pergola is a 3-Michelin star restaurant and Rome’s most famous roof garden. It's also considered to be the most international restaurant in Italy.
🍹
Where to grab a drink

Check out these places:

  • Jerry Thomas Speakeasy: A speakeasy in the truest sense (you'll need a password to get in!) with elevated cocktails in a moody, old-world bar with leather armchairs & a roaring '20s theme.
  • Magazzino Scipioni: An industrial wine bar steps from the Vatican City perfect for a night cap or mid-day pick me up!
