Your Italian Honeymoon

The Italian dolce vita is difficult to describe. It is something that truly needs to be experienced first-hand. It is found in the ambient sounds of Rome's cobblestone streets, in the rows of vines of Tuscany's tranquil vineyards, reflecting in the immaculate and azure Mediterranean waters off the Amalfi Coast, and in the daily interactions with Italy's jovial citizens. The unbridled romanticism of a honeymoon in Italy will leave you with memories lasting a lifetime.

Weather

This time of year expect warm and sunny days, and pleasant evenings. The temperature hovers between 13-27°C (55-80°F) in the north, 16-27°C (60-83°F) in central Italy, and 21-30°C (70-85°F) in the south. But even though these temperatures may seem perfect, you'll want to pack the lightest layers possible, as Italy is not immune to heat waves during June.

Everyone is more or less familiar with Italian culture, from watching movies, learning about the Roman Empire, or simply eating pizza. But not until you arrive in the country do you realize that everything you thought you knew is really just the tip of an enormous iceberg. Every region—every town even—has a unique personality, so no matter how many times you visit Italy, you’re always left with the craving for more.

Explore Pompeii

Italy is steeped in ancient history and today you will pass by one of the most well-preserved residues of it.
Pompeii was a thriving citadelle in the reigning years of the Roman empire. A center for commerce, trade, art and science. In a catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D it was buried under ash and pumice, thus preserving it to an impressive extend.

On your drive down to the Amalfi coast, stop for an hour to stretch the legs and learn about this site from your private local guide.

A word on Italian Dining

If you’re not familiar with the Italian way of doing dinner, it generally goes:

  • Antipasto – small tasting plates or platters of meat, fish, seafood, cheese and vegetables.
  • Primo – first course (or starter), this is usually pasta or rice and you will want to pace yourself as there’s a lot more food to come.
  • Secondo – entree (or main course) usually comprising fish or meat together with potatoes or vegetables.
  • Dolce – dessert
  • Caffe – always an espresso. Never anything long or frothy!

Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint. Buon appetito!

Day 2: Amalfi Coast
The postcard worthy town of Positano on the Amalfi Coast
The postcard worthy town of Positano on the Amalfi Coast

While most of Italy is about sightseeing, there’s nothing to visit per se on the Amalfi Coast. Instead of lavish churches and ancient monuments, the rugged coastline is the sight, best enjoyed from a hilltop al fresco restaurant, the bow of a yacht, or inside your car while navigating one of the world’s most scenic drives. Amalfi is a luxurious destination with a humble past, where glitzy villas still intermingle with sleepy fishing villages and bucolic lemon orchards.

Far from everyone and everything, discover the luxury of a swim in hidden coves, accessible only from this beach club; or take a walk on the pebble beach.

Spread out on your lounger or sitting below the sun umbrella reserved just for you. Beach towels are readily available for your use.

🌴
More things to do

Spend a day in the nearby towns of Amalfi.

  • Stroll from one side of Amalfi town to the other and pay a visit to the Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea and the Chiostro del Paradiso. If you’re after something more active, perhaps embark on a walk through the Valley of Mills, where for centuries paper mills were in operation.
  • Alternatively head up Valley of Dragons to reach pretty Ravello – for centuries, its lofty position and sunny, dry climate has made it an appealing place for writers, artists, musicians and travellers. Ravello also boasts two magnificent villas – the superb 11th Century Villa Rufolo which was once the home of a famous composer, and Villa Cimbrone, a sumptuous 19th Century mansion with fabulous gardens and unequalled views over the Gulf of Salerno.
  • Hike the route of the lemons, which connects the town of Maiori to nearby Minori (or vice versa). This path is the perfect way to spend a morning, and affords stunning views to the sea. You’ll also get your fill of all the lemon trees you can possibly imagine. Something that may affect which route you take: if you start in Maiori, you’ll spend most of your time climbing down stairs to Minori. If you start in Minori, well… be prepared to climb for those views!

These are recommendations, not planned activities and require shuttles to be reached. Hotel staff will be happy to arrange these for you

Day 6: Heading to Rome

This morning you will say goodbye to the Amalfi Coast and head to Rome!

Rome, the city that stood the test of time
Rome, the city that stood the test of time

With an uncanny sense of foresight, Rome was first called the Eternal City 2,000 years ago. Even by today’s standards, it’s still grand in a way that few other places can compare to. The buildings are dilapidated and the roads disheveled, but chaos has never looked so exquisite. The cobblestone streets may be nonsensical, but a wrong turn always leads to an unexpected delight: an intimate piazza, a baroque fountain, or a homey trattoria serving house-made cacio e pepe.

Why we love it for you:
Truly one of a kind, Palm Suite brings a touch of the exotic to the Eternal City. While they may be set in a grand 18th-century building, each suite has its own whimsical style – a statue of a tiger in one, a golden palm-shaped lamp in another. With the Colosseum and Forum for neighbors, the views are rather special too.

Free afternoon in Rome

Wonder the streets of Rome and explore the surrounding area.

If you are into vintage designer finds check out Mercato Monti Urban Market, where you'll find handcrafted accessories and other treasures from local artisans. Nearby a street is lined with chic boutiques selling clothing and jewellery from independent designers

Then, wind your way towards a garden, where you can survey the Eternal City in citrus-shaded splendour from the heights of a hill.

For a spot of more secret sightseeing, peek through the keyhole of a nearby villa for a hedge-framed glimpse of St Peter’s Dome.

And finally, to end your afternoon in true Italian fashion, why not go for an aperitivo? June is perfect for Italy's unofficial national cocktail, the aperol spritz.

🍹
Cocktail recommendation

Quench your thirst with some Roman theatrics at The Court, Palazzo Manfredi’s Colosseum-adjacent cocktail terrace, where mixologists whip up an impressive range of experimental drinks. Don’t miss the signature Rising Sun, an aromatic blend of gin, yuzu, matcha, moscato grapes and honey presented in a Japanese teapot; or the quintessential aperol spritz.

🦁
Optional: Visit the Colossuem

We recommend checking out the Colosseum and the Roman Forum on this day!

In many ways, visiting Florence today feels like a trip directly into the Renaissance. The energy that inspired the likes of da Vinci and Michelangelo is still palpable, from the grandiose pink and green facade of the Duomo to an unembellished plate of Florentine steak with potatoes. It’s easy to get engrossed by the art and shopping in the historic center, but walk across the Ponte Vecchio to find Florence’s most authentic osterias and enotecas on the left bank of the river.

Apericena Recommendation

This is one of my favorite things to do in Italy; you combine "aperitivo" and "cena" (dinner). There are certain bars that offer a fair amount of bites to eat with drinks, either free of charge, with a small fee, or à la carte, depending on whether you're there for an aperitif. It's a way to experience the city like a local!

Navigate your way from idyllic town to idyllic town through the rolling hills of Tuscany
Navigate your way from idyllic town to idyllic town through the rolling hills of Tuscany

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the magic of Florence, but there’s so much more to Tuscany outside of the capital city. Hop in the car and the city quickly gives way to medieval villages, terracotta estates, and endless rows of vineyards. The region is renowned for its history and art, but sensual pleasures reign supreme: copious glasses of wine, simple cooking with seasonal ingredients, natural thermal baths. If you’re seeking la dolce vita, you’ll find it in Tuscany.

Volterra and San Gimignano tour

Travel through the countryside and reach Volterra, somewhat off-the-beaten-track this is no doubt Tuscany's most bewitching town. Inhabited since the Iron Age, the town dates back over 3000 years and offers visitors an authentic journey into its rich, eventful history thanks to the exceptionally well-preserved remnants of each historic/artistic period.
Meet your dedicated English-speaking guide here and set off to explore, learning all about the ancient 'Velathri'
(later transformed into Volterrae by the Romans), and how it became one of the most powerful and important towns of the Etruscan Confederation.

Crown the morning with a luscious lunch in one of the town's trattorias before setting off once more for a scenic drive to San Gimignano. Enjoy some time at leisure in the 'medieval manhattan', otherwise called the 'town of the 100 towers'. Here you can roam the pretty cobblestone-paved streets of this UNESCO World Heritage Site and browse the quaint shops filled with unique local products: delicious Vernaccia white wine, Italian ceramics, and home linens.

Chianti Classico Stories

The legend of the Gallo Nero

One of the best things about traveling is finding out the local myths and legends. Ever wonder what is the meaning behind the symbol of the Chianti Classico wine?

The black rooster, emblem of Chianti Classico Wines

🐔
Storytelling time

We will take you back to the medieval Tuscany of the 12th century where the country was run by city kingdoms. Florence, Luca, Pisa, Siena and Arezzo were the most powerful ones. No.. let's be honest, Florence was the most powerful one, fighting everybody else around it for land ownership.
The Chianti Valley, in the heart of Tuscany lies between Siena and Florence. These unfortunate cities were getting run down by armies fighting for territory every few years. Something had to be done. So the Grand Duke of Tuscany, of the known Ricasoli family gathered all his knights around the round table to find a solution.

  • It was proposed that two knights, one from Florence and one from Siena will wake up at dawn and start riding in the direction of each other. The location where they met would be the border of the regions.

As you might imagine, the strategy came down to the rooster, who was responsible of waking up the knights.
Let it be known that in medieval stereotypes, Sienese were rumored to be beautiful and fashionable and the medieval Florentines were rumored to be smart, with big noses.
So the Sienese chose a chubby, healthy white rooster and fed it to it's heart's content! The had it sleeping on pillows and living like a king. On the contrary the Florentines chose a black rooster, who they locked in an underground cellar with minimal food and water; just enough to survive.

  • The big day came and the Sienese rooster decided to sleep in; living like a king permitted that! The Florentine rooster, suffering and hungry woke up the knight early in the morning, who without further ado hopped on their horse and started galloping toward Siena.

Politics, money and power have always been important in our world, including 17th century Tuscany. Tuscany wines became popular after the phyloxera epidemic destroyed French vines in the 16th century. That's when the British aristocracy's consumption turned to Tuscany.

As expected, everyone started producing Chianti Classico wines. The Tuscan oligarchs then imposed some restrictions on wine production, enforced by a Consortium in 1761. Only wines produced exclusively from vineyards within a protected 100-square-mile area could be called "Chianti Classico".

This rule still applies and is strictly enforced today.

  • This is the DOCG label found on the neck of wine bottles, showing that they are authentically Chianti Classicos. DOCG stands for "Denominazione Origine Controllata e Protetta".

Learn about the town's rich history and how it was founded by the Romans, discover the major landmarks among which Piazza del Campo, where twice a year dashing horses compete in the heart rendering Palio race. Hear your guide recount fascinating legends as you wander down medieval streets, and visit the magnificent Duomo, Siena's awe-inspiring Cathedral. Marvel at the Gothic town hall, and climb on top of Torre del Mangia, a slender 14th-century tower with sweeping views from its distinctive white crown.

Siena is divided in 17 neighborhoods, the "contrade", which extend outward from the main piazza and each have their own flag! Look out for these as you walk around!

  • This activity is a recommendation, it is not booked by scenset.

A word on Pienza

Nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, Pienza is a captivating gem that embodies the essence of Renaissance beauty. This UNESCO World Heritage Site exudes a charming allure with its perfectly preserved medieval architecture, winding streets, and breathtaking vistas of the Val d'Orcia countryside. A stroll through Pienza reveals an array of artisanal shops, quaint cafes, and delectable trattorias, where one can indulge in the region's renowned pecorino cheese.

The Cathedral

The Pienza cathedral was constructed in 1459, and is considered to be one of the most important Rennaissance buildings in all of Italy. It was commissioned by a Pope, who was one of the earliest supporters of the renaissance. The Pope was born into a humble family in a village called Corsignano. Pienza was his home of choice, the city that took him in as a young boy and educated him. He dedicated the cathedral to the Virgin Mary. The cathedral was built over the ruins of the ancient romanesque church of Santa Maria.

It is also worthwhile to pay a visit to Palazzo Piccolomini, the summer residence of the Pope. Piccolomini is the family name of the Pope.

👒
Corso Rossellino

Pienza started by two main gates and one straight road connecting them. Porta al Prato and Porta al Ciglio are the two gates. Walk from one end to the other through Corso Rossellino and get to know Pienza on foot; you will encounter many historic sites, cute boutiques and enotecas and the jovial citizens of this beautiful city.

End your walk at the panoramic view point and have a coffee in this scenic terrace.

🌾
About Montalcino

Montalcino is dominated by an imposing fortress and blessed with an impressive history of territorial wars between Italian city kingdoms. But this charming medieval hill-top town is arguably these days best known for its wines, being home to Brunello di Montalcino, one of the world’s most famous reds.

⛰️
Monte, Monte, Monte..

You will notice that all the towns around you start from "Monte". Montalcino, Montereggioni, Montepulciano, Montevarchi, Monteaperti, Montecatini.. The list goes on and on!
The reason is that Tuscany is so hilly and all these medieval towns were built on top of a hill for defense reasons then; for great views now.

20:00 : Dinner Reservation

Day 14: A day at leisure
Recommendation: Visit the near by thermal baths

Just 15 minutes away from your hotel you will find a small thermal-springs village.

The area around Siena is famous in Italy for having a high concentration of thermal hot springs likely due to the proximity to the ancient extinct volcano of Mount Amiata. The springs have been used since the Roman era and are now turned into a modern spa establishment

There are two locations to choose from:

  • Antica Querciolaia: The waters here gush up from the subsoil from three sources at different temperatures. These waters contain a high quantities of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium, all ideal for treating respiratory, locomotive and cutaneous issues. Apparently, a historical figure, soaking in a travertine basin that still exists today, found relief for his wounds thanks to these miraculous springs. Might it cure whatever ails you?
  • San Giovanni: These thermal baths are made up of sulphurous-bicarbonate-calcic waters that gush from the source at 39 degrees Celsius.

Enjoy the Botanic Spa of your hotel

Situated where the old olive mill of the Borgo once stood, the Botanic Spa of the hotel is something to be enjoyed. The warm, welcoming atmosphere preserves the history of the space, with arched ceilings and high windows. If you are looking for total relaxation, exclusive restorative wellness experiences, a bio-sauna and a Kneipp bath, and exclusive rooms for couples’ treatments, this is your spot.
After-all, no one should feel like they need a vacation from their vacation.

This is a recommendation.

🥦
Take a stroll through the vegetable garden

The Orto Felice, the vegetable garden of your hotel is a must-see during your stay there. This is an important part of daily life in our Borgo, involving everyone who lives at San Felice.

The “Orto e l’Aia nel Borgo” was created as a social agriculture project intended to improve the quality of life for disabled children by helping them socially integrate and offering them the opportunity to work. Thanks to the participation of local pensioners, the hotel was able to create important synergies that allowed the knowledge of local agriculture to be passed down to younger generations during an intergenerational exchange that has become like the glue binding together the entire local community.
