Italy From Top to Bottom

Everyone is more or less familiar with Italian culture, from watching movies, learning about the Roman Empire, or simply eating pizza. But not until you arrive in the country do you realize that everything you thought you knew is really just the tip of an enormous iceberg. Every region—every town even—has a unique personality, so no matter how many times you visit Italy, you’re always left with the craving for more.

Day 1: Benvenuti in Italia!

Whereas most parts of Italy feel like stepping into ancient history, Milan is emphatically modern. You’ll still find landmarks like Italy’s biggest cathedral and frescos painted by da Vinci, but the high fashion, skyscrapers, and trendsetting restaurants give the city a 21st-century undertone. Designer shopping is just as much a part of Milanese culture as aperitivo, the local version of happy hour where drinks are usually accompanied by a buffet of Italian snacks.

Venice Restaurant Recommendations
  • Club del Doge is a gourmet restaurant decorated in Venetian style, with a highly elegant and romantic ambience.
  • Antinoo’s Lounge, situated in the luxurious Centurion Palace hotel, a decidedly designer-style decor. Colourful, modern and imaginative cuisine created by a young chef takes pride of place on the menu.
  • Osteria da Fiore, an osteria in name only, this restaurant has an elegant ambience. You will enjoy Venetian cuisine, as a skilled chef combines traditional local dishes with their own personal touch.
  • La Colombina is a delightful family-run restaurant that's small in size, but large in offering delicious dishes that speak of Venetian and Italian tradition offered in a modern key.
  • Il Ristorante Adriatica has been a surprise hit with locals, partly because the 60s-esque decor is so different to most Venetian restaurants, but also for well-turned-out dishes such as spaghetti alla vongole.
  • Oro is a 1-Michelin Star restaurant in the Belmond Cipriani.

Nowhere in Italy mixes landscape, culture, and history quite like Sicily. In the span of a day, you can hike a spewing volcano, go for a swim in the crystalline sea, take photos of Baroque architecture, and gawk at ruins so old that they make the Colosseum look young. Even Sicilian cuisine is something unique, where couscous is as common as pasta and gelato isn’t served in a cup or a cone but rather a freshly baked brioche bun—the ultimate ice cream sandwich.

Sicily Restaurant Recommendations

Set high above Taormina, Al Saraceno has a fabulous view, with an elevated terrace overlooking the glittering city, Ionian Sea and Mount Etna. It’s built underneath the rock church of Madonna della Rocca and the medieval Saracen Castle. Pizza is the name of the game here, but the chef also serves up traditional Sicilian seafood specialities, including mussels and grilled fish of the day.

The organic restaurant of your hotel offers a candid cooking style which brings old local wisdom back into life, an informal inn, a home to old traditions and to guests.

Born in 2014 as a wine bar, Osteria Santa Domenica became a real restaurant in Taormina in 2016 with a wine list with more than 350 selected labels and a menu made with only slow food and Km0 ingredients.

Pizzeria Villa Zuccaro is located in the historic center of Taormina, just a few steps from Piazza Duomo and in the vicinity of Porta Catania, known to most as "Porta del Tocco," and is the ideal venue for those who want to spend a pleasant evening enjoying the flavors of typical Sicilian cuisine. The establishment, housed in a 17th-century stone villa, is surrounded by a lush green garden.

This is one of those bright, charming and modern restaurants that represent new-age Italy. The cuisine is strongly linked to the region with fish dishes to the fore presented in an attractive and contemporary style.

Day 7: Hit the Water

Hit the water for a day on the Mediterranean!

10 a.m. | Private Yacht Around Taormina

Experience the Taormina Bay tour by your private yacht! One of the highlights of the day is the visit of Grotta Azzurra with its colorful shades of blue in contrast to Capo Taormina and its rocky coastline - made famous by the film Le Grand Blue. Etna and the Gulf of Giardini Naxos will provide the perfect background for your day on the water.

You'll be able to jump in and swim in the waters surrounding the Grotta del Giorno. The tour will continue along the coast towards the Bay of Mazzarò and the Bay of Mermaids, one of the most secluded bays of the entire coastline and a perfect location for a swim in the clear, cool waters. Finally, enjoy your tasty lunch on board.

Then, stop for a special picnic set for you in a private and elegant setting.

In the afternoon, your driver will bring you to the Piano Provenzano, where you meet your personal donkey and trekking leader. Long before the inventions of cars and airplanes, donkeys were the main means of transportation in this area, and you get to tour this magical land as it was experienced generations ago before our modern era. Day 13: Sorrento -> Rome

With an uncanny sense of foresight, Rome was first called the Eternal City 2,000 years ago. Even by today’s standards, it’s still grand in a way that few other places can compare to. The buildings are dilapidated and the roads disheveled, but chaos has never looked so exquisite. The cobblestone streets may be nonsensical, but a wrong turn always leads to an unexpected delight: an intimate piazza, a baroque fountain, or a homey trattoria serving house-made cacio e pepe.

  • Pipero is a 1-Michelin star restaurant, long-favoured by food enthusiasts in the capital, with simple dishes which are nonetheless full of character.
  • Felice a Testaccio is a simple, family, trattoria-style atmosphere. Without a doubt, one of the standard-bearers of Latium cuisine.

  • Moi is a small and decidedly smart place. A chef cooks fresh seasonal ingredients with modern techniques, which can also change daily.
  • Prati Rione Gastronomico offers a varied ranging from bistro to pastry, from cocktail bar to bakery; as well as a pizzeria. Well-made cuisine - the choice is limited, but the quality is tantalizing!
  • Piccolo Buco is an exceptional pizzeria where you can choose from pizza Roma, spaghetti carbonara and exotic salami.
  • Aroma is a 1-Michelin star tribute to the city and the aromas of Mediterranean cuisine that is served here together with local specialties. The dishes are seasoned by a chef with a touch of creativity.
  • La Pergola is a 3-Michelin star restaurant and Rome’s most famous roof garden. It's also considered to be the most international restaurant in Italy.
  • Taverna dello Spuntino has a particularly striking interior. From its old tufa passageways converted into a wine cellar in the basement, to its charming dining rooms with brick-vaulted arches where hams, flasks of wine, fruit and antipasti all form an attractive display.
