Florence

In many ways, visiting Florence today feels like a trip directly into the Renaissance.

The energy that inspired the likes of da Vinci and Michelangelo is still palpable, from the grandiose pink and green facade of the Duomo to an unembellished plate of Florentine steak with potatoes.

It’s easy to get engrossed by the art and shopping in the historic center, but walk across the Ponte Vecchio to find Florence’s most authentic osterias and enotecas on the left bank of the river.

The rest of the evening has been left for you to explore at your own leisure.

You may enjoy:

🌅
Exploring Florence
  • Visit Boboli Garden, great for an afternoon stroll! It also features five museums: the Museum of Russian Icons, the Treasury of the Grand Dukes, the Imperial and Royal Apartments, the Museum of Costume and Fashion, and the Gallery of Modern Art.
  • Enjoy a panoramic point in Florence to take some nice pictures, the best point is definitely Piazzale Michelangelo, especially at sunset time. If you enjoy being active, you can reach Piazzale Michelangelo by taking a nice walk; otherwise, you can easily reach it with a taxi!
  • Bardini Villa features beautiful Renaissance gardens above the city filled with wisteria; it's a great place to watch the sun set over Florence. There is also a working monastery you can visit.
  • The Duomo is a constituent of the Monumental Complex of Santa Maria del Fiore, joined by Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Baptistery, Santa Reparata, and the Opera del Duomo Museum. Positioned in close proximity to the cathedral, all of these attractions are accessible with a single ticket. You can also climb to the top of Cathedral dome.
  • The Baptistery of San Giovanni is one of the oldest buildings in Florence across from the Florence Cathedral. Inside, the golden mosaic ceiling is the standout piece. It's steeped in history!

When it comes to food, we've got you covered:

🍕
Restaurant recommendations

A few of our favourite places to dine in Florence are:

  • Il Santo Bevitore, this restaurant offers home-style cooking, as well as a touch of creativity in the evening.
  • Caffè dell'Oro has an elegant atmosphere of the Tuscan and Mediterranean dishes takes pride of the place.
  • Omero is a Trattoria run by the same family for 30 years with typical regional cuisine.
  • ‘INO serves probably the best Panini in Florence, known for exceptional flavours!
  • Buca dell’Orafo offers traditional Tuscany dishes in a surrounding that reproduces the typical atmosphere of an ancient Florentine restaurant.
  • Trattoria Sostanza is famous for its cuisine, since 1869. The concept is to eat by sharing two long marble tables, sitting next to whoever happens.
  • Cammillo, the food here is deeply embedded in Florence’s culinary DNA as well as family-passed down traditions.
  • Regina Bistecca isn't a secret, nor is it tucked away in some off-the-beaten path alleyway in Florence. It is simply the city's premier spot to indulge in the city's iconic dish of bistecca alla Fiorentina.
  • Zeb is a small, sleek, diner-style restaurant serving delicious traditional food on a changing menu in contemporary surroundings where a mother-and-son team prepare, serve, and pour wine.
  • Gurdulù, now under new management and a new chef have morphed this eaterie from a high-end gourmet restaurant into a deli/takeaway/eat-in hybrid. The sophisticated retro decor is still intact, but both the vibe and the menu choice are more relaxed these days.
  • Osteria dell'Enoteca is a contemporary space within the context of an ancient Oltrarno townhouse, offering seasonal Tuscan fare with a modern twist.

No reservations have been made - let us know if you'd like us to make any for you.

🍽️
Fine dining

A few options you may like are:

  • Essenziale: As its name suggests, Essenziale, on the Piazza del Cestello, has only the essentials: loud music, bright lights, stone floors, and bare tables save for water glasses and folded napkins. There’s nowhere to hide, and nothing masking the excellent food. Menus are based on seasonal, regional, and local ingredients; add the odd global influence, accomplished technique, and real flair into the mix and the results are always interesting—sometimes sensational. (13-min drive/13-min walk)
  • Regina Bistecca: Regina Bistecca isn't a secret, nor is it tucked away in some off-the-beaten path alleyway in Florence. It is simply the city's premier spot to indulge in the city's iconic dish of bistecca alla Fiorentina. The steaks here are expertly handled and prepared one-way, very rare, as it is meant to be consumed. (4-min walk)

No reservations have been made - let us know if you'd like us to make any for you.

🍅
Traditional dining

A few of our favorites are:

  • Cibrèo Trattoria is a popular trattoria serving Tuscan classics. It is often crowded, and there is no point in trying to book a table as they don’t take reservations.
  • Trattoria Cammillo is something of a Florentine institution, it's located on the south bank of the Arno by the Ponte Vecchio.
  • Vini E Vecchi Sapori is small, crowded and noisy but full of character! The “No pizza, no cappuccino, no ice, no takeaway” notices say it all. This is a place to feast on competently-prepared Florentine classics such as liver-topped crostini, pappardelle pasta with duck sauce, and peposo, a hearty, pepper-centric beef stew.

You may enjoy:

Coffee shops

Florence has some wonderful coffee shops, a few of our favorites are:

  • Ditta Artigianale, known for bringing specialty coffee to Florence, it has multiple locations in the city. It's not just about espresso here; they offer a variety of brewing methods and a selection of beans from around the world. Their scenset location is in the historic center, making it a great stop during a day of sightseeing.
  • La Ménagère is part coffee bar, part restaurant, and part concept store, La Ménagère is a beautiful space to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or anytime. The interior is uniquely designed, and the atmosphere is perfect for either working on your laptop or relaxing with friends.
  • Caffè Gilli is one of the oldest coffee houses in Florence, located in Piazza della Repubblica. Caffè Gilli provides not just coffee but a historical experience. Its pastries are as much of an attraction as its espresso, and the ambiance brings you back to the glamour of early 20th-century Italy.
  • Caffè Paszkowski: Another historical café located in Piazza della Repubblica, it has a rich history and was once a brewery. It's a great place to enjoy coffee while soaking in the historical atmosphere and occasionally enjoying live music.
  • Caffè Rivoire: Situated in Piazza della Signoria, offering a prime view of the Palazzo Vecchio, Rivoire is known for its hot chocolate but also serves excellent coffee. It's a perfect spot to relax after visiting the nearby Uffizi Gallery or just to enjoy the view of one of Florence's most magnificent squares.
🍢
Apericena

This is one of our favorite things to do in Italy, combining "aperitivo" and "cena" (dinner). There are certain bars that offer a fair amount of bites to eat with drinks, sometimes free of charge, sometimes with a fee, or à la carte, depending on whether you're there for an aperitif. It's a way to experience the city like a local!

Places where this is typically offered:

🍷
Wine bars

A few of our favorites are:

  • Le Volpi e L’Uva: A great pre-dinner stop! Tucked away off the Ponte Vecchio is one of the most revered wine bars in the country. Part shop, part bar and local hangout, Le Volpi pours and sells bottles that uniquely represent the Italian wine landscape, highlighting passionate producers. (8-min walk)
  • La Terrazza: On the rooftop terrace of Hotel Continentale is one of the best views over Florence... and also a fantastic spot for a pre-dinner glass of wine or cocktail! Regardless of where you end up this evening, La Terrazza is definitely worth a stop. (5-min walk)
  • Il Santino: The wine bar of Il Santo Bevitore is just a short walk from the restaurant. It's a easy-going and quaint atmosphere with seasoned sommeliers to help guide you through their wine offerings (15-min drive/11-min walk)
  • Enoteca Pitti Gola e Cantina: An extensive cellar of Tuscan wines paired with regional dishes on a terrace opposite Palazzo Pitti in Oltrarno. (15-min drive/10-min walk)

There are four routes indicated on the hotel map. However, the entire 740-acre estate is free to roam. The surrounding countryside is typical of Tuscany's rolling beauty, and home to rich wildlife, including hares, deers and even boars.

🏡
Explore the estate

Opposite the main entrance of COMO Castello Del Nero sits a 400-year-old cedar tree, which — ancient as it is — is less than half the age of the estate itself.

The Castello began life in the 12th century as the country residence of a noble family, and later another family, who — like many modern-day Florentines — preferred to swap the city’s sweltering summer heat in favour of the cool Chianti hills.

🍋

We recommend the following restaurants within the vicinity of your hotel:

  • La Taverna di Vagliagli is known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine, offering a cozy atmosphere that's perfect for experiencing classic dishes made with local ingredients.

  • Ristorante Malborghetto, situated in the scenic village of Lecchi in Chianti, offers a sophisticated take on regional cuisine, with chef Simone Cipriani at the helm.
  • La Bottega del 30** is a Michelin-starred experience in the village of Villa a Sesta. This place is famous for its meticulous attention to ingredient quality and creative interpretations of Tuscan recipes. Note: this restaurant is seasonal so may not be open during your dates.
  • Osteria Alla Piazza offers stunning views of the Chianti countryside and serves a range of delicious Tuscan specialties, with a focus on fresh, seasonal produce.
