Explore Italy

The Italian la dolce vita is difficult to describe. It is something that truly needs to be experienced first-hand. It is found in the ambient sounds of Rome's cobblestone streets, in the rows of vines of Tuscany's tranquil vineyards, reflecting in the immaculate and azure Mediterranean waters, and in the daily interactions with Italy's jovial citizens. The unbridled romanticism of a trip in Italy will leave your family with memories lasting a lifetime.

Rome

With an uncanny sense of foresight, Rome was first called the Eternal City 2,000 years ago. Even by today’s standards, it’s still grand in a way that few other places can compare to. The buildings are dilapidated and the roads disheveled, but chaos has never looked so exquisite. The cobblestone streets may be nonsensical, but a wrong turn always leads to an unexpected delight: an intimate piazza, a baroque fountain, or a homey trattoria serving house-made cacio e pepe.

Your Stay: Six Senses Rome
Six Senses Rome
Six Senses Rome

No matter where we are, for us, la dolce vita is a life where you’re connected to what matters. A Six Senses hotel in Rome translates this vision to offer both an escape and a sensory-rich journey for guests. Layered on to this are little rituals contrasting with the grandiose beauty of the Eternal City. From a restaurant-café-bar, the spot where all our paths cross, to a rooftop space offering unique views, and our take on the ancient art of bathing in our spa – all just steps away from historic landmarks and glorious works of art.

Life as a Gladiator

Set off on a journey through Rome’s most fascinating ancient sites. Designed to enthrall, entertain, and educate your little ones, this private tour will make their experience of the Eternal City utterly unforgettable, transporting them from the Colosseum to the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill, which offers stunning views over the Circus Maximus.

Your Emperors and Gladiators tour starts in the Colosseum
Your expert, kid-friendly guide will bring to life the stories of the men and beasts who battled for survival in the Colosseum. Enrich yourselves with fun, relevant knowledge of the amphitheater you wouldn’t get anywhere else while your guide keeps your kids entertained with gruesome tales of the ancients.

Pizza Making Class

Under the expert guidance of your seasoned English-speaking chef, you’ll perfect the art of Italian cuisine at one of two cooking schools: one around the corner from Piazza Navona; the other a stone’s throw from the Pantheon. So if pomodoro sauce made from San Marzano tomatoes and creamy mozzarella di bufala melting over hand-rolled dough sounds appealing, you’ve come to the right place.

Upon arriving to make your edible masterpieces, you’ll be greeted with specialties such as Calabrian chilli sauce spread over bruschetta, melon wrapped in “Prosciutto di Parma”, or delicious supplì stuffed with rice and ragù – all naturally complemented with a healthy helping of prosecco.

After this, you’ll start off by creating your own traditional Italian gelato. Your private chef will guide you through every step from mixing the ingredients, choosing your timings, and selecting from a variety of delicious flavors including fresh fruits of the season, rich roasted hazelnuts, Perugian dark chocolate, and deep-green pistachios.

The second part of the class teaches you to become a proper Italian pizzaiolo. Under the expert guidance of your own private chef, you’ll be crafting and rolling out your own dough and garnishing it with a generous helping of delicious toppings.

From flowering Roman zucchini, spicy salami, Sicilian peppers, farm-fresh mushrooms, and sweet red onions from Tropea, choose anything you want for your creation. Once all the hard work’s done, pop your pizza in the oven and leave it to cook for just a few minutes.

At the end of the class, wind down by pouring yourself some wine, beer, or soft drinks, and taking a seat at the table. Here your private chef will serve you your delicious creations of pizza Romana and dreamy gelato.

Day 13: The Roman Underground
Basilica San Clemente
Basilica San Clemente
Tour of Underground Rome

Roam through the depths of Underground Rome, exploring the depths of the awe-inspiring Eternal City. Ancient Rome was built with permanence in mind, so instead of destroying their creations, the Romans built on top of them. This has left the oldest parts of this ancient civilization underground and largely inaccessible. Until now.

Descend into the dim passageways and explore the long-lost ancient buildings full of artifacts buried 200 feet deep! Let your expert guide walk you through this ancient underground labyrinth that is preserved underneath the surface of Rome.

At the Basilica of San Clemente—an archaeologist’s Pandora’s box—you can venture down this three-tiered complex of buildings ranging in function, creating three distinct layers that are waiting to be discovered.

Start by entering the building’s foundation, a noble mansion from the 1st Century AD. Then enter the next layer, a Temple of Mithras. Built in the courtyard of the former mansion, it became a center for worshipping the pagan sun god Mithras. Finally, go up to the top layer, the Basilica of San Clemente, which houses beautiful mosaics, holy relics, and even one of Rome’s original aqueducts.

Another stop on this tour is the macabre Bone Church, also known as the Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini. This church and catacomb contains one of the most shocking tourist attractions in Rome—a crypt with its walls decorated entirely with skulls and bones.

This tour also allows you to take a ride on the Old Appian Way (Via Appia Antica), the oldest road in Rome. With its many ancient stones, tombs, and ruins lining this ancient path, there are many places to see on your way to one of Rome’s catacombs.

Your tour guide will take you into one of the many catacombs along the Appia Antica. Travel to the depths of either the San Sebastiano, San Callisto, or Domitilla catacombs, and uncover the importance of these layered sites.

Your underground Rome adventure awaits! Discover the history, the macabre, and the ruins underneath a thriving city.
