Cultural Tips

Indonesian people are very easygoing and would rarely tell you if you are doing something that offends them. However, here are a few things to think about while you are in Indonesia:

  • Do not give or take anything with your left hand, as it is considered impure.
  • Do not touch children's heads, as this part of the body is considered to be the home of the human soul.
  • Do not blow your nose while eating. It is best to get up and step away from the table.
  • In busy areas, keep your shirt on (unless on the beach of course).
  • Hands on hips are a sign of defiance, especially when talking to someone.
  • Ask questions. When visiting a religious site, taking part in a religious practice, or simply touring a town, ask lots of questions to your Indonesian guides and friends. Indonesians are incredibly proud of their culture and are happy to share. This is also true if you are not sure how to act or feel uncomfortable in a situation – ask questions to make sure you are following proper Indonesian etiquette.

Day 3: Birds of Paradise
🛕
Villages of Papua

An early wake up and a short hike would allow you to witness the mating ritual of rare endemic Red Birds of Paradise.

After breakfast, get the chance to visit the picturesque Christian village of Arborek. Thirty minutes to walk the entire coastline of the island and witness the peacefulness and hospitality of the local people.

The reefs nearby foster an exuberant marine life for a refreshing snorkel or dive below the jetty.

Later that day, the boat will moor in the middle of the mangroves of Yanggefo where the lush green of the sea trees contrasts with the crystal blue water. You can take a kayak to get lost in one of the many little canals they create while listening to the concert of birds surrounding you, from white parrots to the endemic species of hornbill.

A dive in the mangrove is also a unique experience to witness the soft coral growth in the roots hosting juvenile species of fish.

Day 4: The Wayag Islands
🌺
Earth's Last Paradise

On the way to the Wayag Islands, we cross the Equator to the Northern hemisphere to reach the last paradise on earth, a large bay with hundreds of mushroom-like islets, white sandy beaches, black tip reef sharks and manta rays cruising in the turquoise-blue water.

There you will live the once in a lifetime experience of swimming with the local population of black tip sharks in shallow water.

Later in the afternoon, you will get to climb Mount Pindito for a superb viewpoint, or just glide effortlessly above lush coral garders where baby sharks and mantas find shelter.

Get your kayak and explore this labyrinth, a true wonder of nature.

You will probably meet the giant turtles, Napoleons, barracudas, and many other schooling fish around this coral garden just under the jetty.

On the east side of the same island, you can hike up to an impressive viewpoint, literally dive into the highest measured underwater biodiversity on the planet inhabiting the nearby reefs and finally spend the sunset on one of the sandbanks.
