Your Greek Adventure

There is an old Greek saying that goes along the lines of 'When God wanted to recreate Heaven on Earth; he made Greece', and it's easy to see why. The crystal blue waters of the Aegean, the idyllic Cycladic islands, the relics and monuments of one of the most impactful civilizations that have persisted for a millennium; it's all just a fraction of the allure that enamors visitors to this sanctuary in the Mediterranean.

Athens

Maintaining a place for thousands of years is no easy task and, on the surface, Athens can feel like a city in shambles. But if you’re willing to embrace the chaos, then hipster neighborhoods and an underground art scene give Athens an up-and-coming vibe, despite being one of the oldest cities in the world. It’s a capital of contradictions, where sipping a craft cocktail in a trendy rooftop bar overlooking the ruins of the Acropolis is par for the course.

This afternoon is yours to explore at your own pace. You may enjoy:

🌳
The National Gardens

Athens National Gardens are a short walk from your hotel.

  • Commissioned by the first queen of Greece, the gardens cover 16 hectares of narrow gravel paths and ponds, as well as a small zoo with wild Greek goats, peacocks and chickens. It's a great spot for some relaxation and respite from the city.
  • You could also visit Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre (SNFCC) which has gardens, cafés, the Greek National Opera, and a manmade river.

This is a recommendation only.

🎭
Athens-Epidaurus Festival

Summer in Greece is filled with local festivals and during your trip, you will have the opportunity to visit the Athens-Epidaurus Festival. It is one of the most famous festivals in Greece and one of the most prominent cultural festivals in Europe. The festival includes musical, theatrical and other cultural events in historically significant places.

This evening, consider dining in one of the many delicious restaurants in Athens.

🍽️
Restaurant Recommendations

A few restaurants we love in Athens are:

  • Dionysos Zonar’s is nestled in the shadow of the rock of Acropolis, in the heart of the historic centre of Athens.
  • Diporto is a nostalgic Athenian favourite.
  • Matsuhisa is a trendy restaurant by Nobu's iconic Nobu Matsuhisa!
  • Kostas is probably the most famous street food hangout in Athens, and a must for Souvlaki!
  • Kuzina is a trendy restaurant with a fusion of creative Greek & international cuisine.
  • Lukumades is a great urban-inspired dessert cafe, famous for the sweet pastry honey puffs of the same name.
  • The Rooster is a great cafe/bar serving sandwiches/burgers/pasta and brunch options. Their frappe is exceptionally good! At night, it's a great spot for drinks and music.
  • Couleur Locale is more than just an all-day bar and restaurant in Athens, offering food & drinks, coffee, art, events & workshops. With an outdoor terrace with views of the Acropolis, it's a great spot!

These are recommendations only - let us know if you'd like us to make any bookings for you.

🧉
Up Late
  • Dance the night away at the bouzoukia, flashy night clubs where Greek popular music is performed live and flowers are thrown at the artists as a sign of appreciation; an essential part of Athenian nightlife that goes well into the early hours!

This is a recommendation only.

Enjoy your first day in Athens. Your time can be as relaxing or as action-packed as you'd like it to be.

Today, venture out onto the Acropolis hill and immerse yourself in the golden era of Greece.

🇬🇷

Please note that the walk up the Acropolis Hill is part of the experience of visiting this incredible ancient site. Consider the astounding number of people who have walked the same path through millennia. In fact, all the buildings you see on the Acropolis were built or rebuilt during the 500-300 B.C.

🍇
Must-try food!

Athens is heaven for street food so take the time to explore the side streets of the city for excellent street food while immersing yourself in the Athenian way of life - and that means coffee. Coffee is huge in Greece, especially the Greek iced frappe (which is a must!), and of course, the famous souvlaki and gyros.

Thissio is great to start for street food, from here head to Plaka and then head to Monastiraki, one of the best places in the entire city to grab souvlaki is at a restaurant, right behind the Parthenon. You can also take the time to explore the Monastirika neighbourhood.

This is a recommendation only.

This evening is yours to explore the city independently. You may enjoy:

🍿
Cine Paris

Summer in Athens means one thing for locals, outdoor cinemas! Cine Paris is the most famous and is best known for its striking Acropolis views. It is one of around 90 outdoor film venues in Athens where you can watch Greek and foreign classics, plus the latest Hollywood releases. This is one for a local experience and hang out with Athenians.

This is a recommendation only.

🥃
Best Bars

A few of our favourite places to grab a drink in Athens are:

  • SUPERFLy is an Athenian hotspot with a lively atmosphere on the weekends!
  • City Zen has great Acropolis views!
  • The Clumsies has been voted three times in a row as one of the world’s best 50 bars for 2015, 2016 and 2017 by Drinks International Magazine. Located in a beautifully restored neo-classical building, The Clumsies attracts a cool crowd of all ages and offers an extensive unpretentious menu from breakfast through to dinner, making it a quasi restaurant and a great spot for a coffee break during the day.
  • T5 is a great bar to grab a drink
  • Ermou 18 Beyond the Horizon is a rooftop bar with great views of the Acropolis, and a great sunset spot! They serve food also, but it's all about the drinks and view here.

Watermelon Pie!

Sampling a slice of traditional watermelon pie, or "karpouzopita," is an experience not to be missed. This unique dessert, born from the island's need to make use of leftover summer watermelon, is a testament to the flavor-packed nature of the island's culinary heritage.

As you sink your teeth into the crisp, flaky layers of pastry, you'll discover a surprising and delightful filling of juicy watermelon, delicately spiced with cinnamon and sweetened with sugar. Simply delicious!

To try traditional watermelon pie, we recommend heading to Kivotos ton Gefseon (Ark of Flavours), a beautiful local cafe and shop run by a family, that specialises in traditional sweets and pastries from the island.

4pm - Private Hiking in Paros

Through the green and blooming meadows of Paros, along the slopes and down into cool valleys, a path of weathered, grey marble flagstones winds its way from the pretty mountain village of Lefkes to the picturesque Prodromos, an old, small, fortified Cycladic settlement. This is the so-called "Byzantine Road", a path built nearly a thousand years ago as part of the main thoroughfare across Paros from the settlement of Paroikia to Piso Livadi, at a time when the Aegean Sea was teeming with pirates. Today, the Byzantine Road is a beautiful and only slightly strenuous amble that goes through the island's interior for 3.5 kilometres. We will pick you up from your hotel and head to Lefkes to visit this quaint little village and begin our hike. We will hike to the village of Prodromos (duration: 1h00/1h15) and enjoy a light "mezze" and refreshments in a traditional Parian taverna before returning to your hotel with your private transfer.

The most famous ones are Kolympithres Beach, characterised with blocks of granite, and Santa Maria Beach, characterised by its length and the beautiful sand.

The beaches on the eastern side, particularly Golden Beach and New Golden Beach, provide nice spots for windsurfing; while the Pounda area is worldwide famous for kitesurfing. Not to be confused with Pounda Beach which is famous as a party beach.

A hidden gem on Paros, Kalogeros Beach is known for its healing mud, which visitors slather on for an all-natural spa treatment.
