Today, take a step back in history and explore the magnificent sites of the golden century of Pericles.
The Acropolis is the most important ancient site in the Western world. Crowned by the Parthenon, it stands sentinel over Athens, visible from almost everywhere within the city. Its monuments and sanctuaries of white Pentelic marble gleam in the midday sun and gradually take on a honey hue as the sun sinks, while at night they stand brilliantly illuminated above the city. A glimpse of this magnificent sight can not fail to exalt your spirit.
The Acropolis became a World Heritage-listed site in 1987. The Museum was founded to exhibit all the significant finds from the Sacred Rock and its foothills. It was designed by architect Bernard Tschumi with Michael Photiadis and inaugurated in the summer of 2009. The Museum hosts its collections across three levels, as well as in the archaeological excavation that lies at its foundations.

Please note that the walk up the Acropolis Hill is part of the experience of visiting this incredible ancient site. Consider the astounding number of people who have walked the same path through millennia. In fact, all the buildings you see on the Acropolis were built or rebuilt during the 500-300 B.C. As a result, the marble steps are very shiny and slick. Additionally, don’t forget to wear a pair of comfortable walking shoes and absolutely avoid wearing flip flops. Sunblock, sunglasses, and a hat are a must. Lastly, don’t forget to bring a water bottle and lots of energy!

Through Paros’ green and flowery meadows, along hillsides and down into cool valleys, a path of weathered, grey marble flagstones meanders from the pretty hillside village of Lefkes to Prodromos, a small, old, fortified Cycladic settlement. This is the Byzantine Road, built about one thousand years ago as part of the main thoroughfare across Paros from Paroikia to Piso Livadi, at a time when the Aegean Sea was infested with pirates. Today, the Byzantine Road offers a lovely amble that crosses the island’s interior.

The best way to experience Naxos is to wake up early and hike to the summit of Mt. Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades. Look out over the idyllic villages at sunrise with their sugar cube buildings as the islanders head out into the fields for the day. Continue walking and you’re more likely to come across ancient ruins and wandering goats than other tourists. Regardless of which direction you go, all paths lead to a white sand beach with crystal water.
