Day 7: Oktoberfest!
The grounds of Oktoberfest at Theresienwiese
The grounds of Oktoberfest at Theresienwiese
🍻
Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit

Spend the day at leisure on the grounds of the world-famous Munich Oktoberfest. Head to Theresienwiese and revel in the absolute joy that is Munich's Oktoberfest, which began as a public event to celebrate a royal wedding. Today, it is the largest Volksfest (or people's fair) in the world with around 7 million visitors each year, consuming some 7 million liters of beer.

Oktoberfest Tips
  • Before you go, be sure to get to an ATM and take out plenty of cash! Oktoberfest can be expensive and is, for the most part, cash only! You'll likely need more cash than you realize.
  • Entry into the beer tents is free! Reservations are not needed. A quarter of the seating in the main tents are not reservable and are "first come, first serve". On the weekends, half the seats cannot be reserved until 3 pm.
  • During the week, the large tents at Oktoberfest (including the Oide Wiesn) are open from morning to late evening. On weekends, the tents open their doors in the morning.
  • To ensure seating, we recommend getting to the Oktoberfest grounds as early in the day as possible, even at opening if you're up for it! In the evening, seating can be more difficult to come across as visitors have already found their seats for the rest of the day. We therefore suggest doing your "tent hopping" in the morning/early afternoon.
  • The crowd-favorite tents include Augustiner Festhalle, Armbrustschützenzelt Paulaner, Hofbräu-Festzelt, Hacker-Festzelt, and the Löwenbräu-Festzelt. You can read about each of the tents here.
  • Every 20 minutes, the tent bands will play a classic Oktoberfest tune called "Ein Prosit". The lyrics which translate to "A toast, a toast, to cheers and good times", if you'd like to sing along are:

Ein Prosit, ein Prosit
Der Gemütlichkeit!
Ein Prosit, ein Prosit
Der Gemütlichkeit!

Please check out the official Oktoberfest website for additional information.

Day 8: A Tour of Munich
Feldherrnhalle
Feldherrnhalle

Munich: the birthplace of the Nazis. But how and why? How did the Nazis rise to power in Germany, ultimately committing one of the greatest atrocities in human history? Head out with a historian to explore the early life of Adolf Hitler from his move to Munich in 1913 to his involvement in the DAP, and the subsequent rise of the Nazis from the 1920s. Visiting some of the most crucial sites in the “Hauptstadt der Bewegung"—the Capital of the Movement, or the birthplace of the Nazi Party, you’ll examine the rise of the Third Reich, the horrors and tragedies of their regime, and the events and circumstances that led to their grasp of German politics.

🌹
The Third Reich and Munich

Begin your WWII Nazi Munich Tour at Marienplatz, from which you will be introduced to the themes of the tour and dive off in the direction your guide chooses. You might go to the former Sterneckerbräu, a Munich brewery which gained fame as the place where the first branch of the German Workers’ Party (DAP) met, before becoming the Nazi Party (NSDAP). You'll visit today’s Hofbräuhaus, another brewery which helped propel Hitler to the center political stage and where he gave his first speech in 1920.

Continue on to Feldherrnhalle and Odeonsplatz as you discuss how this location took on new significance in the run-up to the Nazi power takeover. A former memorial to the Bavarian army, Feldherrnhalle was the site of the failed Beer Hall Putsch of 1923 and for future parades, rallies, and Nazi meetings. Here, you'll discuss the evolution of this important space over the Nazi rule and the visible damage that can be seen today from the fallout for the constant bombings throughout WWII.

After visiting the Feldherrnhalle, you may spend time in the Hofgarten talking about the Scholl siblings and the resistance to the Nazi regime during WWII (the Weiße Rose, or White Rose, movement). From here, move to the Haus der Kunst, Nazi Germany’s first building designed specifically to demonstrate Nazi architecture and propaganda. We will pass by former NSDAP buildings such as Reinhard Heydrich's office, the former Gestapo HQ, and the site where Hitler first met Eva Braun. Finish in the area of Munich that was the administrative district of the Nazi Party during the 1930s and 40s. As you spend some time in and around Königsplatz (where the Party held mass rallies/book burnings) your guide will discuss the ‘Führerbau’. This building was where the famous Munich Agreement was signed in 1938: a document which world leaders, such as Neville Chamberlain, strongly believed would avert another world war.

Duration: 3 hours

Tour of Salzburg

The walk begins at Mirabell Palace, an official UNESCO World Heritage Site. Initially known as Altenau Castle, the structure was built under gout-ridden Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich Raitenau in the 17th century. This offers a fitting spot to dive into anything from the love story of a prince Archbishop and his forbidden mistress, to exile and family politics, to the influence of baroque architecture. Note the perfectly manicured gardens and talk about their numerical symbolism, like the four 17th century sculptures by Ottavio Mosto that represent the elements. As you leave this behind, walk past both the composer Mozart’s Wohnhaus (Residence) and mathematician Christian Doppler’s house. This will give you the opportunity to introduce two of Salzburg’s greatest minds and talk about their predominance on the world stage, still today.
