You will discover the Palace of Versailles like never before. With access to the main areas of the Palace; the Hall of Mirrors, the State Apartments, or Marie-Antoinette's Private Chambers, your guide will also reveal previously unseen spaces and rooms.
The King's Apartments
Louis XIV made several adjustments to his Private Apartment. The most major changes were carried out in 1701 when the King’s Chamber was moved to its current location, in the centre of the façade of the Marble Courtyard. As in all royal residences, the King’s Apartment contained the customary succession of rooms: a Guard Room, two antechambers, a chamber and a cabinet. Access to these rooms was subject to strict hierarchy and controlled by etiquette. Beyond them was the king’s private domain, which, as a matter of principle, no one could enter unless invited.

Petit Trianon
Beyond the gardens of Versailles lies Trianon, and the Estate of Marie-Antoinette. As part of your stay at Le Grand Contrôle, enjoy complimentary access to this Le Grand Contrôle guests' exclusive tour, as your guide will unlock a new room and garden for you every morning, before opening hours. With a different tour route each time, expect to discover the true gems of Versailles - everything from Louis XIV’s Grand Trianon to the English Gardens lovingly created for Marie-Antoinette.
In 1758, Louis XV decided to build a new palace in the middle of his gardens, which, by then, he had been working on for around ten years. He commissioned Ange-Jacques Gabriel, first architect to the King, to build a pavilion large enough for himself and some of his entourage to live in. With the Petit Trianon, Gabriel produced a blueprint for the neoclassical movement – a perfect example of the ‘Greek style’ that was taking Europe by storm at the time.
Completed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel in 1768, the new palace on the Trianon estate was named the Petit Trianon to distinguish it from the existing Marble Trianon, which then became known as the Grand Trianon. It was here, in April 1774, that Louis XV experienced the first symptoms of smallpox, which would lead to his death a few days later and usher in the reign of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette. The new King Louis XVI gave the Petit Trianon as a gift to his wife, who quickly made it her own and ordered an extensive redesign of the external areas. Louis XV's botanical gardens were soon replaced by an Anglo-Oriental garden.
