Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

The Galapagos Archipelago is a cluster of some 13 volcanic islands and associated islets and rocks located just under the equator, about 600 miles (1000km) west of Ecuador in South America. The oldest of the islands is about 4 million years old, and the youngest is still in the process of being formed.

About 97% of the islands are part of the Galapagos National Park system, with the remainder being inhabited by about 14,000 people in four significant communities (Puerto Ayora, Puerto Baquerizo, Puerto Villamil, and Floreana). The Galapagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Research Station jointly operate the islands. The Park Service provides rangers and guides and is responsible for overseeing the many tourists who visit each year. The Darwin Station conducts scientific research and conservation programs. It is currently breeding and releasing captive tortoises and iguanas.

This group of 13 major islands and dozens of smaller islets and rocks - all the result of volcanic activity - indeed appear to be out of this world. They are, in fact, an unpredicted wilderness, filled with extraordinary populations of unique species, which have developed apart from humans and their dominating influence. To preserve the islands as they were centuries ago, the Galapagos have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The Galapagos Islands have low biodiversity (that is, few animal species) because the islands are 600 miles from the continent. This vast expanse of cold ocean in-between makes it very difficult for new kinds of plants and animals to reach the islands.

Marine organisms, such as green sea turtles and corals, probably came on their own, swimming, or as floating larvae. Sea birds are all strong flyers that frequently make long journeys across the open sea. But most of the Galapagos life forms reached the islands by accident, and all had a long sea voyage. During that trip, both plants and animals were exposed to salt water, drying winds, and intense sunlight. They had no freshwater or food. Galapagos reptiles are also more likely than land birds or mammals to be able to survive under these conditions. As a result, animals of the Galapagos Islands are species whose ancestors were already well suited for their harsh environments. Compared to elsewhere in the tropics, there are few birds or Galapagos mammals, and many essential groups are missing.

The archipelago is 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador in South America and belongs to Ecuador. Discovered in 1535 by Spanish Bishop Tomas de Berlanga, the Islands became famous when British Scientist Charles Darwin arrived in Galapagos in 1831 and based his theory of Evolution on his findings in the Galapagos.

Arrival Transfer

Afterward, drive to the Itabaca Channel to take a ferry across to Santa Cruz Island. A 30-minute bus ride takes you up to the fascinating, more humid Highlands of the island where you'll learn about its unique ecosystems and biodiversity.

Day Tour to North Seymour

On your first stop, you'll explore a small but incredibly stunning island. Here, you'll disembark via a panga (dinghy) for a dry landing. As you set foot on the island, you'll be captivated by the flat, uplifted terrain, a fascinating result of underwater geological forces, rather than volcanic activity. This island was once part of the ocean floor.

This island is teeming with wildlife that greets visitors as they traverse its trails. Prepare for enchanting encounters with graceful Galapagos sea lions, and iconic avian wonders such as frigate birds and the comical blue-footed boobies. If luck is on your side, you might even catch a glimpse of blue-footed boobies engaging in their comical courtship rituals. Within this harmonious ecosystem, you'll also have the chance to observe the endemic land iguana and its unique aquatic counterpart, the world's only marine iguana. Look to the skies, and you might spot the masked cousin of the blue-footed booby, the majestic Nazca booby.

At this location, your wildlife checklist is likely to include up to 7 out of the 15 iconic species found in the Galapagos – a remarkable opportunity to witness the diversity of this unique archipelago up close.

🌵
Cerro Mesa & Garrapatero Beach

Located on the eastern highlands of Santa Cruz, Cerro Mesa is a private reserve, rich in endemic flora and birdlife, with six subspecies of finches, mockingbirds, and short-ear owls. The area is also home to Galapagos tortoises, endemic to Santa Cruz. You can explore the various trails at the reserve and end the circuit at the lookout where you can contemplate the lush landscape of Santa Cruz and the nearby islands on a clear day.

The striking contrasts of the black lava, white sand, and turquoise water of Garrapatero Beach catch many by surprise. Nearby, dense mangroves play host to all of the Galapagos ground finches, including the cactus finch, which feeds off the Opuntia cacti that dot the trail on the short hike to the area. As the beach comes into sight, watch out for the Manzanillo trees along the path. The small apples on their branches are inviting but poisonous, and even the sap touching your skin can cause burns and rashes. Other creatures above and below the waterline that call Garrapatero Beach home are marine iguanas, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, rays, and sea turtles. The animals have little fear, allowing you and your children to get close for amazing photos.

Through the mangroves skirting, the sand is a freshwater lagoon where you can often spot flamingos, white-cheeked ducks, and black-nested stilts in the morning or the late afternoon. Just past the tide pools on the beach, clear waters offer a secluded spot for swimming. We can also arrange kayaking off the beaches’ shores in search of sea turtles, a great way to actively explore the bay and spot marine life in the nooks and crannies along the shoreline.

Searching for the Giant Tortoise

A highlight of any trip is a visit to Santa Cruz Highlands, where the dry coastal vegetation transitions to lush wet fields and forests overgrown with mosses and lichens. Our destination is the Tortoise Reserve, where we will have chances to track and view these friendly and ancient creatures in their natural settings. This extends to the adjacent pasturelands, where farmers make some profits by allowing visitors into their farms. The best times to see tortoises here are during the cool or dry season from June through December. Before we go back to the hotel, we pay a visit to the Gemelos o Twin Craters.

The Twin Craters, or Los Gemelos, are two massive sinkholes located in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island, formed by collapsed lava chambers. Surrounded by lush scalesia forests, these impressive geological formations are a must-see for nature lovers, offering a peaceful atmosphere and the chance to spot unique bird species, including Darwin's finches.
