On your way to Cusco, stop by a weaving workshop run by local women who practice the ancient art of Peruvian weaving.
The art of natural dyeing and weaving in Peru is deeply rooted in the country's rich cultural heritage and history. Peruvian textile traditions date back thousands of years, with evidence of sophisticated weaving techniques found in archaeological sites such as those of the ancient Moche and Nazca civilizations.
Natural dyeing in Peru involves the use of locally sourced plants, minerals, and insects to create a vibrant array of colors. Some commonly used natural dye sources include cochineal insects for red, indigo plants for blue, and various local plants for yellows, greens, and browns. The process of extracting pigments from these sources is often labor-intensive and requires traditional knowledge passed down through generations.
Weavers in Peru employ a variety of techniques, with backstrap and frame looms being among the most traditional. Backstrap looms, in particular, are portable and allow for intricate patterns and designs. Many Peruvian weavers continue to use traditional patterns and motifs that carry cultural significance, often telling stories or representing elements of nature and mythology.

Imagine a veritable time capsule hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the great Pacific port of Guayaquil. In the 1980s, historic buildings threatened with destruction were moved, rebuilt and renovated plank-by-plank on the banks of the Daule. Hotel del Parque was one of these buildings. Today, you can discover it standing elegantly, wrapped in the tropical bosom of a vast botanical garden. Sitting on the waterfront, the hotel’s restaurant, Casa Julián, specializes in the finest seafood and freshest fish. The Galapagos Archipelago is a cluster of some 13 volcanic islands and associated islets and rocks located just under the equator, about 600 miles (1000km) west of Ecuador in South America. The oldest of the islands is about 4 million years old, and the youngest is still in the process of being formed.
About 97% of the islands are part of the Galapagos National Park system, with the remainder being inhabited by about 14,000 people in four significant communities (Puerto Ayora, Puerto Baquerizo, Puerto Villamil, and Floreana). The Galapagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Research Station jointly operate the islands. The Park Service provides rangers and guides and is responsible for overseeing the many tourists who visit each year. The Darwin Station conducts scientific research and conservation programs. It is currently breeding and releasing captive tortoises and iguanas.
This group of 13 major islands and dozens of smaller islets and rocks - all the result of volcanic activity - indeed appear to be out of this world. They are, in fact, an unpredicted wilderness, filled with extraordinary populations of unique species, which have developed apart from humans and their dominating influence. To preserve the islands as they were centuries ago, the Galapagos have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The Galapagos Islands have low biodiversity (that is, few animal species) because the islands are 600 miles from the continent. This vast expanse of cold ocean in-between makes it very difficult for new kinds of plants and animals to reach the islands.
Marine organisms, such as green sea turtles and corals, probably came on their own, swimming, or as floating larvae. Sea birds are all strong flyers that frequently make long journeys across the open sea. But most of the Galapagos life forms reached the islands by accident, and all had a long sea voyage. During that trip, both plants and animals were exposed to salt water, drying winds, and intense sunlight. They had no freshwater or food. Galapagos reptiles are also more likely than land birds or mammals to be able to survive under these conditions. As a result, animals of the Galapagos Islands are species whose ancestors were already well suited for their harsh environments. Compared to elsewhere in the tropics, there are few birds or Galapagos mammals, and many essential groups are missing.
The archipelago is 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador in South America and belongs to Ecuador. Discovered in 1535 by Spanish Bishop Tomas de Berlanga, the Islands became famous when British Scientist Charles Darwin arrived in Galapagos in 1831 and based his theory of Evolution on his findings in the Galapagos.
After leaving the lounge you will meet your private, bilingual, naturalist guide who will be with you for the duration of your stay.
To maximize your first day in the Galapagos Islands, you will be taken to a number of visiting sites on the way to Galapagos Safari Camp.

Your Galapagos safari starts with a short drive from the airport to a small dock on Baltra Island (keep an eye out for the land iguanas!). Here you will transfer to a boat to cross Itabaca Channel, a narrow strip of water separating Baltra Island from Santa Cruz Island. Once on the other side, you will transfer again to a private car for a short drive through various vegetation zones to the lush highlands of Santa Cruz.
The first stop is Los Gemelos (The Twin Craters); two colossal, volcanic sinkholes. On a gentle hike around the rim, your guide will point out the birds of the endemic Scalesia forest such as Galapagos doves and Darwin’s finches.
From Los Gemelos you continue to a reserve for giant tortoises. Your tour of the reserve will follow a gentle circuit trail where you get within meters of these iconic Galapagos creatures. Keep a look out too for short-eared owls, as they are occasionally spotted in the trees. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
The tortoise reserve also contains a network of underground lava tubes, formed centuries ago when lava flows cooled at the edges but kept flowing in the middle, leaving cave-like tunnels in their wake. To fully appreciate the uniqueness of the Galapagos Islands, and its wildlife, it’s important to first understand the archipelago’s geology and volcanic history.
Afterwards, you'll be transferred to Galapagos Safari Camp to enjoy the rest of the afternoon and evening at leisure.
Bordering the pristine lands of the National Park, this family-owned Camp is ideally located, private, quiet, and far from the coastal crowds of Puerto Ayora.
It is with intent that the layout of the camp follows the land; little to no alterations were required during construction as we adapted to the terrain. Indoors and outdoors blend; tents stand nimbly on stilts, fanning into the forest. Uncluttered spaces, fitted with warm earthen colors and comfortable furniture that highlight the views.
The Galapagos Safari Camp experience is all about close intimacy with nature, a true sense of place, warm sincere hospitality and outstanding Ecuadorian cuisine.

Your safari will begin this morning at Cerro Mesa, a private reserve rich in endemic flora and bird life. Explore the various trails with your guide, ending the circuit at a viewpoint where, on a clear day, you can survey the lush landscape of Santa Cruz as well as nearby islands.
Afterwards, you will make your way to Garrapatero Beach, either by car or by bicycle. In contrast to the thick, green vegetation of the highlands, the coastal terrain is made up of black lava, white sands, turquoise waters and dense mangroves. As the beach comes into sight, watch out for the Manzanillo trees along this path. The small apples on their branches are inviting but poisonous. Even the sap can cause burns and rashes to the skin.
The picturesque, white-sanded beach of Garrapatero is an ideal spot for secluded swimming and kayaking. Set behind the beach is a small lagoon where flamingoes are occasionally spotted.
Your picnic lunch can be enjoyed under the shade of the endemic vegetation while observing the local fauna. Alternatively, you may drive to a restaurant in Puerto Ayora for a later lunch.
On your way back to the Camp you will visit El Trapiche Ecológico, a working farm in the highlands that produces sugar cane liqueur and Galapagos coffee. Learn about the different methods used to refine sugar cane, including the use of a mule-driven press (note: the mule may be off-duty during your visit). There is also a demonstration of how artisan coffee is produced, from picking the berries to roasting the bean.
You will then return to your hotel for the rest of the day at leisure.

Over these next two days, you'll have the option to visit your choice of uninhabited islands described below:
After breakfast you will be transferred to the dock (a 30-minute drive). Once onboard your boat, you will navigate to your destination. Each of the islands’ tours include a guided walk and a guided snorkel. Lunch is served onboard the boat as food is not permitted in the National Park.
These boat navigations are often a good opportunity to chat with your guide and to learn more about these extraordinary islands and the creatures that inhabit them. Alternatively, guests often use this time to quietly reflect on their scenset by jotting down their thoughts or elaborating on sketches. As author John C. Maxwell wrote, “It’s not necessarily experience that is valuable; it’s the insight people gain because of their experience.”
Please note that the boating excursions are shared services with other guests with a maximum of 16 passengers. Your own private guide will accompany you however.

Enjoy the serenity that Galapagos Safari Camp has to offer. To make the most of this morning we recommend getting up early for a reflective stroll around the camp, perhaps taking in the sunrise from our observation deck.
When you’re ready, breakfast will be served on the veranda, alongside the friendly finches and warblers. Many of our guests are surprised by the bonds they have formed with these little birds over such a short space of time, often being able to identify them individually by their markings and scars. But of course, connecting in this way with the natural world is what makes these islands so special, so inspiring and regrettably, so hard to leave.
For your airport transfer, your guide will accompany you all the way to the airport, overseeing the short ferry transfer across Itabaca Channel to Baltra Island, and from here, the car transfer to the airport.
