The Happy 10 in Croatia

The second-largest city in Croatia (after its capital Zagreb), Split sprawls along a peninsula, jutting dramatically into the Adriatic. As with the country’s other waterfront towns, picturesque beaches abound, but Split stands apart for its fortress-like Diocletian’s Palace, an ancient complex built in the 4th century AD. Split is easily accessible from the Croatian Islands and a good jumping off point for exploring by boat.

Hvar

One of the sunniest islands in Europe, Hvar has a lovely interior filled with lavender fields, small churches and charming villages. Hikes among the fields of lavender and abandoned stone villages elicit memories of what hamlets in Tuscany and Provence must have looked like half a century ago.
