Outside of the city, Croatia is one of the most biodiverse countries in Europe. Take your pick from limestone caverns, technicolor lakes, and the paradisal Adriatic islands.

The second-largest city in Croatia (after its capital Zagreb), Split sprawls along a peninsula, jutting dramatically into the Adriatic. As with the country’s other waterfront towns, picturesque beaches abound, but Split stands apart for its fortress-like Diocletian’s Palace, an ancient complex built in the 4th century AD. Split is easily accessible from the Croatian Islands and a good jumping off point for exploring by boat.
