Croatia’s weather is fairly similar around the country and you can expect plenty of warm weather in September. The climate is more Mediterranean the closer you get towards the coast and hotter further south.
In Austria, temperatures are a few degrees lower than the highs of July and August, but the weather in Vienna in September is still warm and sunny. It’s your last chance to explore this amazing Austrian city before the colder autumn climate takes over.
In Switzerland, September is the start of fall and the beginning of the low season for tourism. But with still-summery weather in many places, great conditions for outdoor activities, the grape harvest for winemaking, and lighter tourist crowds, September is a great month to visit Switzerland.
US Passport holders do not require a visa to visit Europe. Your passport needs to be valid for 6 months or more from your departure date.

Restaurants, Bars & Cafés: In Croatia, it's customary to leave a tip in restaurants, cafes, and bars. The standard amount to tip is 5-10% of the total bill, depending on the level of service you received. Tipping is voluntary, and you should only tip if you feel that the service was good. Some restaurants may include a service charge in the bill, so be sure to check before leaving an additional tip.
Guides & Drivers: For a half-day tour, a good guideline is to tip around €10-€20 per person, and for a full-day tour, €20-€30 per person. For drivers, you can tip around €10-€20 per day. Tipping is a way of showing appreciation for good service, and it's always up to your discretion.

Check into your hotel and enjoy an afternoon at leisure in this stunning city.
Salzburg is a monumental city in Austria. Aside from the location where the Sound of Music was created, it is also Mozart's hometown and a cultural center of arts.
During your independent time there we recommend:
Gourmet dining meets authentic, rustic charm in Sacher’s Zirbelzimmer, preserved in its scenset state since it was first opened in 1866. This restaurant is a part of your hotel and is overlooking the Salzach river. Diners can enjoy Austrian classics as well as seasonal and refined creations by Executive Chef Michael Gahleitner, which have been awarded a Gault Millau toque.
The atmosphere here is pleasantly down-to-earth, and the waitstaff laid-back and friendly. An appealing amuse-bouche of bread and greaves whets the appetite for the modern, seasonal dishes on the menu, such as the saddle of venison served with caramelised chestnuts, chicory and saffron apple. Drinks are self-service – you even mix your own gin and tonic at the bar! Brunch on Saturdays.
NB: cash payments only.
Boasting 1 Michelin star.
Housed in a distinctive glass vault with an elegant interior and a magnificent view of the city, Schloss Mönchstein's fine dining restaurant is really impressive. Here, well-drilled waitstaff serve fabulous modern cuisine with a personal touch. Opt for one of two set menus (one vegan), or order premium steak and classics like sole fried whole and Wiener schnitzel à la carte. The wine list includes a decent selection of Austrian labels as well as some big names from France and Italy.
Why we love it for you: Hear the music and experience the history of Mozart’s hometown. At Hotel Sacher Salzburg, history and luxury are two sides of one imperial coin. Live like royalty and feel like family in the company of world-class musicians, statespeople, business leaders, artists, and celebrities. Visit Mozart’s birthplace, Hohensalzburg Fortress, or the Salzburg Festival. Experience excellence, comfort, hospitality, and culture in the heart of Salzburg.

This day is dedicated to exploring the scenset of a culturally iconic film - and sort out historical fact from movie fiction!
The arrival of a small film crew in the 1960s to a small Austrian city would forever impact Salzburg. The Sound of Music was released in 1965 and is still today one of the most popular films of all time. But, does the movie reflect what was really going on in Austria?
On this Sound of Music Tour, we will visit a number of sites that appear in this Oscar-winning film, but will also take some time to dig behind the history of the movie. As we take in the impressive views of Mirabell Gardens or Mondsee and the lakes, we’ll address a variety of topics, from the Hapsburg Empire to the political backdrop of WW2 and the role of the Nazis and the Anschluss. We’ll also discuss the reasons why this film took off in certain parts of the world and not others (unbeknown to many, the majority of Austrians have never seen the film). This tour focuses on the real Von Trapp family as a lens into the history of this period, examining the impact of the movie for a little city like Salzburg.

It might be Switzerland’s metropolis but it’s also compact and pleasant. From the cobbled streets of the old town to the shops along Bahnhofstrasse, the city center is a delight to explore. Despite being the financial and commercial hub of Switzerland, it doesn’t feel hectic once you’re sitting beside the lake with snow-dusted mountains crowning the horizon - and not a bank in sight. This almost-perfect urban space has the stereotypical clean streets and great public transport but it’s no sleepy backwater. The biggest Swiss city is also the liveliest and most diverse, with a vibrant cultural scene and buzzing nightlife, not forgetting food that goes far beyond fondue.
