A Costa Rican Safari at Kasiiya Papagayo

With a Swahili name and tented huts, it feels like you're entering a safari park at Kasiiya. But at its core, this 5-star property is all about giving back to Costa Rica.

The Papagayo Peninsula is peppered with resorts, but you would never know that from the secluded jungle that surrounds Kasiiya. The name is Swahili for “find your pace” and at this eco-lodge, that pace doesn’t include alarm clocks, TVs, or swarms of tourists. Instead, you'll wake up to birdsong, take part in healing rituals with a shaman, and hang out with capuchin monkeys who love to socialize with guests.

Arrive and never want to leave

It's a small odyssey to get on and off the property, but the Kasiiya team makes sure that guests never need—or even want—to go anywhere else. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all included, made of meals prepared with organic ingredients to be enjoyed at a communal table with other travelers or on an intimate cliff top when a more romantic ambiance is what you're seeking.

While you can definitely lounge on the beach or luxuriate in the tented spa, "find your pace" doesn't only refer to slowing down. There are plenty of experiences to keep busy so each guest can do as much—or as little—as they want. Guided nature walks, snorkeling in coral reefs, surf lessons, and kayaking with whales are just a sample of possible activities to fill your days.

Sustainable differences

Kasiiya takes the "leave no trace" philosophy very seriously. The entire property could be dismantled and packed out in two days and you would never even know it was there. No trees are ever cut down, the property is run almost exclusively by solar power, and there are several conservation projects to protect the native wildlife.

Responsible tourism also means building up the community, and Kasiiya not only employs local residents but has also invests back through entrepreneurship programs and classroom initiatives.

The property also offers incentives for long stays, which helps lower the carbon footprint of your trip—just in case you need a little justification for extending your vacation.
