Martian-red mountains and lunar salt flats dominate the arid terrain, where life thrives despite the extreme conditions (just look at ancestral settlements or grazing flamingos). The capital of Chile, Santiago, is a bursting city tucked away in a valley surrounded by the Andean foothills. Founded in 1541, Santiago is now a thriving metropolis dotted with fine eateries and top-class hotels. It is the only city in the world that offers skiing high up in the majestic Andes, followed a mere 90 minutes later by walks on the beach and surfing in the Pacific Ocean.
From the airport, commence your half-day exploration of Santiago where it all began on Santa Lucía Hill. It was here that a conquistador planted the Spanish flag in 1541 and the hill went on to play a pivotal role in the city’s history, making it the ideal place to discuss key historical moments and offer an introduction to Chilean society.
You'll then focus on Santiago’s expansion during the period of the New Republic with a walk around the colorful Barrio Yungay. Yungay has a long history going back to the 1830s, the second area of Santiago to be urbanized. It is home to beautiful old buildings from that period and is today strongly linked to culture and the arts. It is also of great architectural interest, with several different types of dwelling, from the gran patronal houses to cités. Among its highlights are the monument to the Roto Chileno and the French Barber Shop, opened in 1968 by three French master hairdressers who attended the staff of the French consulate and residents of the neighborhood.
Drive up to San Cristóbal Hill with your guide which overlooks Santiago. You will climb up its final steps to enjoy a beautiful sunset over the city. San Cristóbal rises from the busy streets of Santiago and provides an excellent vantage point for panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Andes.
This is a stunning boutique bolthole in the heart of Santiago’s hippest district – Lastarria is also home to a pulsating array of cafés, bars, boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. It's the perfect mix of cosy interior design and a show-stopping rooftop pool and bar. All rooms feature king-sized beds, tactile fabrics and a soothing color scheme. This is the super-stylish city sibling of the wild and remote Singular Patagonia.
