Botswana

Dominating this untamed land, massive creatures move about, instinctively following the ancient paths of their ancestors. Water levels ebb and flow, seasons change and life cycles on. It is here in Botswana, where civilization is stripped away, that the natural order of things is so very evident.

Okavango Delta
The delta floods in June and July brought wildlife from the region to its plentiful waters.
The delta floods in June and July brought wildlife from the region to its plentiful waters.

As old as time, the seasonal flood from the Angola Highlands to the Okavango Delta is the heartbeat of Botswana. Seeping along the panhandle and into the largest inland delta system in the world, the water creates a uniquely beautiful National Heritage Site, the incoming tide of life bringing with it birth, transformation and replenishment. These ancient, cyclical changes provide an exceptional safari experience and the area supports vast herds of elephant, buffalo and hippo, as well as numerous antelope, giraffe, zebra and the ever present predators.

Khwai Community Area

The Khwai Concession is a 1800km area in the northeastern Okavango next to the Moremi Game Reserve.

On the outskirts of the beautifully preserved Moremi Game Reserve is a wildlife-prolific and varied ecosystem which provides a patchwork of lagoons, shallow flooded pans, open grass plains and woodland forests. The Khwai area is without a doubt one of the most scenic areas in Botswana.

The Khwai community, adjacent to the northern region of Moremi Game Reserve, has a population of just 400 people who are predominately of either BaBukakhwe or River Bushmen decent. They are an inspirational example of a local community who live in peaceful harmony with wildlife.

Selinda Reserve

The Linyanti/Selinda/Kwando system is an area of over 2,600 sq km (1,000 sq mi) that juts out into the Chobe National Park to the eastern side, with the Okavango to the south. This is real African big game country, and during the dry season the permanent waters of both the Kwando and Linyanti Rivers serve as important migration points for wildlife from much of northern Botswana, including large herds of buffalo and elephant, wildebeest and zebra. The extensive Kwando, Selinda, and Linyanti concessions offer superb wildlife viewing and terrain to rival the physical beauty of the Okavango.

The swamps that fan out from the rivers carry the same magnificent natural history as the Okavango: picturesque channels, lagoons, papyrus stands and reedbeds. Riparian forest lines the waterways, giving rise to magnificent, towering trees. Virtually all naturally occurring antelope and predators can be seen in these concessions, depending, of course, on the season, and food and water availability. Over the years African hunting dogs have frequently denned in these concessions and lion prides have taken to predating on large herbivores that concentrate here.

Selinda Camp

Set in one of the most pristine wilderness areas left on the planet, the Selinda Reserve, Selinda Camp sits on the Selinda Spillway connecting the Okavango Delta to the Linyanti and Kwando River systems. The private 130,000 hectare Selinda Reserve boasts elephants by the thousands, regular sightings of African wild dogs, and the famous Selinda Lion Pride, featured in the National Geographic film “Birth of a Pride” by Dereck and Beverly Joubert. The area has a sense of remoteness, a true spirit of Africa, and an excellent example of Botswana bush embodying various species and rare animals.

Selinda Camp represents the meeting place of three cultures, European, Mokololo, and Bayei. Spears, shields, and an African version of Robinson Crusoe is the enduring theme through the camp. Its architectural design elements centre around Water, Air, Earth, and Fire, all of which ground the design. Selinda Camp’s design pays homage first and foremost to water, with splashes of blue and crystal-clear swimming pools offering views over the equally immaculate Selinda Spillway to ease your arrival, usually by boat.
