Botswana

Dominating this untamed land, massive creatures move about, instinctively following the ancient paths of their ancestors. Water levels ebb and flow, seasons change and life cycles on. It is here in Botswana, where civilization is stripped away, that the natural order of things is so very evident.

Okavango Delta

As old as time, the seasonal flood from the Angola Highlands to the Okavango Delta is the heartbeat of Botswana. Seeping along the panhandle and into the largest inland delta system in the world, the water creates a uniquely beautiful National Heritage Site, the incoming tide of life bringing with it birth, transformation and replenishment. These ancient, cyclical changes provide an exceptional safari experience and the area supports vast herds of elephant, buffalo and hippo, as well as numerous antelope, giraffe, zebra and the ever present predators.

Your Stay: Abu Camp

Abu Camp is set in a pristine riverine forest and blends in seamlessly with the magnificent surrounding hardwood trees. Looking out over a large lagoon, an imaginative use of canvas has created a unique and luxurious style of tent. Each of the six en-suite tents has its own distinctive furnishings and fittings, imparting an air of opulence in the bush, featuring an indoor and outdoor shower, an outdoor copper bath, and a private plunge pool sunken into the elevated teak deck. The multi-decked lounge and dining area, well-stocked library, gym and pool in the main area will keep you entertained, informed and energized while at Abu Camp.

Game drives, guided nature walks, mokoro excursions and boating reveal the many wonders of this wildlife-rich area. The team delight in creating unique moments for guests, with sumptuous meals enjoyed in the bush, dining on tapas, to idyllic sundowner spots, or sharing stories around the camp fire, and movie nights under the starry skies.

Days at Leisure at Vumbura Plains
Sometimes, you may find a local in the trees of the Okavango.
Sometimes, you may find a local in the trees of the Okavango.

Enjoy these days at the captivating Vumbura Plains located in the far north of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Perched on raised decks in the midst of the melapo – the annually inundated grasslands – the camp almost floats over water, radiant blue and pure enough to drink. Nestled under tree canopies and airily open to nature, Vumbura Plains offers intimate wildlife encounters on the spectacular floodplains, studded with ilala palms and small islands.

Marvel at a wealth of wildlife including opportunities to see lions leaping channels in pursuit of prey. Scan the floodplains for the vast array of predators: lion prides; African wild dogs; numerous leopards; occasional cheetahs. Spy a rare sable or sitatunga antelope. Move seamlessly between land and water, between different terrains. Slip quietly through the channels in a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe; travel a bit faster by delta boat. Adventure into the skies, soaring in a hot-air balloon or by helicopter. From the splendour of your suite, watch elephants grazing peacefully in the distance. Search for some of the 600 bird species, lilac-breasted rollers, carmine bee-eaters, secretary birds, and Pel’s fishing-owls among them.
