Tswalu Kalahari

Tswalu is a vast, magical land of infinite possibility, with sweeping vistas and a liberating sense of space. The green Kalahari is nature at its most diverse and surprising, and to spend time here is to be touched by exuberant, soulful beauty. It offers an escape to a place that’s governed by the ancient rhythms of the seasons, rather than the clock and the calendar. It offers a vision of hope that brings together conservation, research and unrivaled safari experience.

At Tswalu you’ll encounter species you may have seen elsewhere, along with drier area specialist species that you probably haven’t. While zebra, buffalo and giraffe will be familiar if you’ve been on safari before, this will likely be your first opportunity to capture iconic Kalahari images such as dainty springbok with a backdrop of red sand, or the silhouette of a gemsbok atop a dune. Many of the species found at Tswalu are of particular significance to the San people, as evidenced by their inclusion in ancient galleries of rock art.

There is a timeless quality to Kalahari – it’s a place where humans have wandered and wondered since the dawn of creation.

Your Stay: Tswalu Loapi
Tswalu Loapi
Tswalu Loapi

Backed by the foothills of the Korannaberg mountains, Loapi is set to become Africa’s top luxury tented safari camp. Offering a true wilderness experience that is both private and exclusive, the camp’s six private safari homes under canvas are positioned to make the most of unimpeded views south across the reserve’s characteristic arid savannah.

With at least 100 m (330 ft) between each residence, guests are assured of solitude and seclusion with a dedicated butler and chef to take care of everything.

In Setswana, Loapi means ‘the space below the clouds’, aptly reflected in the camps environmentally sensitive, modular design, combining canvas, glass and steel. Uncluttered, sculptural interiors, enriched by nature’s colors, forms and shapes, optimize the sense of space and evoke the carefree, nomadic spirit of camping.

Tswalu Wildlife

Tswalu is unquestionably one of the best places in southern Africa to see cheetah in the wild. The vast open spaces and antelope herds of the Kalahari readily lend themselves to high-speed pursuits. Visiting Tswalu also gives you front-row seats for sightings of species that prove elusive elsewhere, from aardvark and pangolin to Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra.

Their gregarious nature and amusing antics (think early morning sunbathing and playing chicken with scorpions) have made meerkats extremely popular as subjects of wildlife documentaries. Tswalu's two habituated colonies have accepted the presence of humans without letting it disrupt the important business of grooming and foraging.

Meerkats are just one of the smaller predators which abound at Tswalu: aardwolf, African wild cat and brown hyena are also frequently seen.

At the entrance to each home is a pavilion, or outpost, from where guests set off on all activities, including day and night game drives, guided walks, a morning with meerkats, field trips with scientific researchers, a dune picnic, or dinner at a restaurant. The outpost is also a welcoming point of return with a bathroom, storage for safari essentials and a choice of refreshments. As with the other camps, guests have private use of a safari vehicle with a dedicated guide and tracker, providing unlimited access to the largest privately protected conservation area in South Africa.

Okavango Delta
The delta floods in June and July brought wildlife from the region to its plentiful waters.
The delta floods in June and July brought wildlife from the region to its plentiful waters.

The Okavango Delta is the largest intact inland delta in the world, and is exceptionally rich in wildlife. Situated deep within the Kalahari Basin, the Delta is characterized by meandering deep water channels lined with papyrus reeds that open up into larger lagoons and islands; these in turn give way to seasonal floodplains and eventually large tracts of dry land where animals congregate. Fed by the Okavango River and rains from the highlands of Angola, the Delta can vary in size from 15,000 sq km (5,800 sq mi) during drier periods to a staggering 22,000 sq kms (8,500 sq mi) during wetter periods.

Game viewing depends on the season, floodwaters and food availability, but it is one of the most sought after wilderness destinations in the world. In addition to big game viewing, visitors come to experience the supreme tranquility and serenity of an untouched delta, and scenset of extraordinary natural beauty. It consistently produces very good predator action with considerable herds of ungulates and elephants, as well as a reintroduced (predominantly white) rhino population.

Days 7-10: Your Stay in the Okavango Delta
Okavango Delta Camp Options

We have two options to propose for your stay in the Okavango Delta, which are detailed below.

Option 1: Little Tubu

  • The camp has just been refurbished and is looking great. The 60,000-hectare Jao Reserve is home to Little Tubu in the north-western Okavango Delta. Little Tubu sits on its own private island, Hunda Island, the largest dryland area of this iconic wetland.

Option 2: Duba Explorers

  • Duba Explorers Camp is tucked away in the northeast corner of Botswana’s Duba Concession, a 33,000-hectare private reserve. The question here is how many camps have opened up in the NG12 concession area making Duba Explorers not as exclusive as it used to be – so you may see other vehicles, but it’s a great option otherwise. It definitely won't be as intense as what you experienced in the Sabi Sands!
Option 1: Little Tubu

Nestled amongst a canopy of trees on Hunda Island, which is known for its high density of predators, and overlooking a seasonal riverbed, Little Tubu is the place to go for an intimate Okavango Delta safari. This camp, near a sister camp, will offer an exclusive safari experience and is perfect for families and small groups. Elevated walkways link the tents to the main dining, bar and pool areas that are designed to blend seamlessly into the surrounding environment and to maximize Okavango Delta views. For travelers who want to feel even more isolated from our modern world: there is a cozy, alternative retreat located about twenty minutes from camp. This accommodation is frequently used for sleeping under the stars (four person maximum). Lying under an enchanting river of stars – see the Milky Way like never before – will make for an unforgettable experience.

Little Tubu
2x Tents

Luxurious, stylish and sheltered by a canopy of trees, Little Tubu’s three elevated tented suites are connected by a series of winding, wooden walkways. Each eco-chic tent is perched on a raised platform, offering exceptional views of a seasonal riverbed. Find your way to the comfortable living area for a dip in the pool, and a drink at the bar built into a waterberry tree.

Inclusions: All meals, twice daily scheduled camp activities, park fees, laundry and all local drinks (premium imported brands and champagne excluded).

🐘
On Safari at Little Tubu

Morning and afternoon game drives on Hunda Island reveal the spectacular wildlife here, where leopard and other big game often feature. The open 4x4 Land Rovers each accommodate a maximum of seven people allowing each guest a ‘window’ seat. Night drives with spotlights allow you to find nocturnal animals you wouldn’t see during normal daytime drives. Porcupine, aardwolf, serval, large spotted genet, and lesser bushbaby are just some of these species.

There is no better way of enjoying the crystal-clear waters of the Delta and its wildlife than by traditional mokoro (dugout canoe), which reveal the smaller fascinating critters and striking waterbirds of the region. Water-level dependent, excursions in the boat allow for good game viewing in the channels further away from camp, often yielding fabulous sightings of hippo and crocodile and maybe even the elusive sitatunga.

Option 2: Duba Explorers

Duba Explorers Camp is tucked away in the northeast corner of the Duba concession, a 33,000-hectare private reserve in the Okavango Delta. Due to its location at the Okavango Delta’s northern reaches, the surroundings are dominated by permanent and seasonal floodplains, grasslands, and pockets of mopane and acacia woodlands. The camp, which has its own private traversing area within the concession, is set under a canopy of mature jackalberry, leadwood, mangosteen, and sycamore-fig trees.

The camp is on an island for most of the year surrounded by beautiful landscapes and watercourses and accessible only by a gum poll bridge. Duba Explorers, part of Great Plains’ Explorers Collection and designed by two explorers, embodies the golden age of safaris and the spirit of exploration.

🛏️

Duba Explorers
2x Tents

The camp consists of five airy canvas tented accommodations, each raised on decking, stylishly furnished with a campaign writing desk, private verandah, and en-suite facilities. Guests wake up to panoramic views of the Delta floodplains and, during the flood season, the water channels link to open water filled with flowering lilies and tall papyrus.

Inclusions: Fully inclusive of all activities, meals, park fees, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, including imported spirits and champagne

🛶
On Safari at Duba Explorers

The unique flooding cycles of the Okavango Delta create a mosaic of habitats from permanent wetlands to seasonal floodplains to woodlands and grasslands around Duba Explorers Camp and fosters an incredible diversity of wildlife. Plains created by dropping water levels in the dry season form a perfect habitat for zebra, wildebeest, kudus, and tsessebes. In the flood season, the area transforms into a water wonderland bringing its aquatic diversity. The year-round healthy herbivore population, including elephant, buffalo, and lechwe and suitable hunting terrain, attracts predators such as lions, leopards, and wild dogs.

During a stay at Duba Explorers Camp, guests step into the shoes of the early adventurers.

Wildlife Viewing
Duba Explorers Camp is a combination activity-based camp. Wildlife viewing activities are predominantly centred around exploring the surrounding Okavango Delta’s permanent channels by mekoro and boating activities (when water levels allow). This is truly an invigorating, yet peaceful, experience allowing for wildlife viewing and birding from a unique perspective.

Guided game walks are the specialist wildlife viewing activity of Duba Explorers Camp, and are available with licensed, armed guides. There is simply no better way to experience the magic of this unique scenset and these walks are ideally combined with wildlife viewing from mekoro or boat, and game drives.

Safari drives (day & night) are in open-sided and canopied vehicles. Accommodating just four to six guests each, specially designed safari vehicles are fully stocked with drinks and snacks. While the wildlife viewing focus is generally during the most comfortable times of day, it is not uncommon to spend a full day out in the wilderness.
The schedule is extremely flexible and guests are encouraged to create their own daily itinerary according to their interests. Very often, safaris will continue into the night in search of nocturnal species.

Fishing
A rod/reel kit is available for those who want to try their cast in the Delta between March and December on a catch-and-release basis - water level dependent.

Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve, named after a tribal chief, was established in 1963 but has a history of exploration and adventure going back more than a hundred years. The area had been a favorite hunting ground of the chief, and today is a favorite photographic destination for adventurous travelers. It covers about 5,000 km2, encompassing about a quarter of the Okavango Delta, one of the world's largest inland deltas.

The northeast portion borders the Chobe National Park and the Khwai river. The prominent mainland of Chiefs Island and its drier habitats, along with multiple lagoons, create an incredibly diverse ecosystem of riverine woodlands, acacia thickets, grasslands, dry pans, palm fringed islands, and hippo-filled waterways, that provide great game-viewing possibilities. The area offers all-round exceptional game viewing.

Your Stay: Mombo Camp

Elevated on wooden decks beneath towering shade trees, a camp overlooks a floodplain teeming with game. Elegant, expansive guest suites celebrate the history and traditions of the camp, while a large deck and plunge pool are ideal vantage points from which to observe the passing wildlife.

Located just off the northern tip of Chief’s Island, the largest landmass in the Okavango, the camp is considered the most fertile area in the Delta, with its mix of habitats attracting large herds followed by numbers and varieties of predators.

Meals at the camp are designed with conservation in mind, with healthy, delicious recipes that tread lightly on the Earth.

Rebuilt in 2018, the camp maintains the integrity of its pristine environment through the use of natural materials, minimal human footprint and 100% solar status.
