Weather

In January, eastern Australia typically experiences summer weather. This means warm to hot temperatures with some regions experiencing high humidity. Coastal areas, such as Sydney and Brisbane, may have average high temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F). Inland areas, especially in the northern parts of New South Wales and Queensland, can experience higher temperatures, occasionally exceeding 35°C (95°F) or more.

This period of time is considered the ‘green’ season which runs from November to April with the heaviest rainfalls usually in January to March, so a rain jacket is recommended!

✈️️
Visa & Travel Requirements

Unless you are an Australian citizen, you will need a valid Australian visa to enter the country. All other passport holders, regardless of age, must apply for a visa before leaving home. You can apply for a range of Australian visa types, including tourist visas and working holiday visas, at your nearest Australian Embassy or Consulate.

You can only apply for the Electronic Travel Authority visa (subclass 601) through the Australian ETA app. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is located here.

👖
Dress

In the tropics, lightweight casual clothing is suitable at all venues, all year round. In the southern temperate regions, layers are the best solution for warm days and cool nights, and smart casual clothing is the norm almost everywhere. The key is to pack for varied climates when traveling to different regions of Australia. It will likely be much warmer in Sydney, Melbourne, and the Whitsundays than on Kangaroo Island for example.

“Must Packs” include:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (the best way to get to know any destination is to explore by foot). More sturdy hiking boots are recommended for outdoor adventures and nature-based walking tours.
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen as well as a long sleeve light-weight shirt for added sun protection (the sun can be particularly intense Down Under)
  • Swimming costume and flip-flops/beach shoes (you are rarely far from water or an inviting swimming pool!).
  • A beach çover-up for poolside dining and resort stays
  • A light rain or spray jacket and/or a small umbrella
  • A jacket, cardigan or light weight sweater (even the Australian outback can become quite cool of an evening!)
  • Credit Cards are widely accepted for payment at most venues across Australia (Visa and Mastercard are generally preferred, American Express is not as widely accepted and may attract a surcharge. Diners Club is not widely accepted).
  • A power adaptor for your camera, phone and other appliances. The electricity current in Australia is 220-240 volts, AC50Hz. Both countries have a 3-pin power outlet that is different to those used in North America, the UK and across Europe, so you will need an adaptor. With insta-worthy photo opportunities at almost every turn, a portable charger can also be a game-changer to ensure you never miss a picture-perfect moment.
  • A photocopy of your passport and credit cards .. just in case.
  • A valid driver’s license (and an official English translation if it is not originally issued in English language) if you are planning on driving or hiring a car. You must carry your valid driver’s license with you at all times when driving in Australia.
  • Dive Certificate (and log book) if you have one and are planning to scuba dive.
  • Prescription snorkeling mask if visiting the Great Barrier Reef. Otherwise, most day tours, cruises and resorts will be able to provide general snorkeling equipment.
  • Insect repellent (especially if traveling in Australia’s tropics or New Zealand’s Fiordland)
  • A small pair of binoculars for wildlife spotting
  • A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and save on plastic
  • A soft overnight bag or smaller suitcase if your itinerary includes transfers or travel by helicopter, seaplane or light aircraft as luggage restrictions may apply to these flights. Storage facilities are usually available for your excess luggage at departing airports. Most regular domestic flights also have luggage restrictions (20kg as standards or 30kg for business class – excess baggage fees may apply at the airport for overweight luggage).
  • In addition, if you're headed to the Australian outback, it is worth bearing in mind that white may not be the best color with the inevitable dust from the signature red earth. An insect net is also a worthwhile investment. Flies can be prolific and persistent, particularly in the warm summer months; so, we recommend an insect net attached to your wide-brimmed hat (another item you should not be in the outback without), and sprayed with insect repellent to prevent the breathtaking vistas being obscured by these pint-sized pests.

💵
Tipping

Tipping in Australia is entirely discretionary and is offered in appreciation of good service. Local incomes are subject to minimum wage requirements set by the Government and as such, employees do not depend on gratuities for their income, nor are service charges routinely added to hotel or restaurant accounts.

In keeping with the relaxed local lifestyle, service styles are often more casual than in many other countries. You should not feel obliged to tip tour guides, waiters or concierge, it is however appropriate and appreciated where the service has been exceptional. The following is therefore only a guide for suggested tipping amounts for various services and in recognition of excellent service:

RESTAURANTS, CAFES AND BARS

  • A tip of approximately 10% of the bill is customary in restaurants, however tips are often pooled and shared amongst the staff.
  • More casual cafes and coffee shops may have a ‘tip jar’ at the counter for small change gratuities at the time of payment.
  • Tipping in bars is not expected, however you may wish to leave the coin change in appreciation of good service.

Please note some restaurants may apply a compulsory surcharge on Sundays, public holidays or for larger groups.

TAXIS

  • It is generally acceptable and appreciated that the bill is "rounded up” to the nearest couple of dollars.

HOTELS

  • A small amount per bag would be acceptable for porters who deliver your bags to your room.
  • A tip of a small amount for delivery of room service meals.

LODGES

  • Lodge guests are not expected to tip. However, for guests who wish to express their gratitude for exceptional service, a moderate amount per night would be an appropriate amount, and would typically be shared amongst all staff.

TOUR GUIDES

  • For airport and inner city transfers a tip of a small amount per person would be appropriate
  • For Half day tours a tip of a moderate amount per person would be appropriate
  • For Full Day tours a tip of a generous amount per person would be appropriate all at your discretion and in recognition of exceptional service.

Please note: Some employees are forbidden from accepting gratuities for example casino dealers, security guards and other positions of authority.

Marine Stingers

The beaches and waters of tropical Australia are a significant part of the natural attraction of these regions. They are also home to several species of marine stingers, including the potentially deadly ‘Box Jellyfish’ (also referred to as Stingers or Sea Wasps) and the ‘Irukandji Jellyfish’. While these creatures do not pose a major threat, it is important to be aware of their potential danger and the means of minimizing the risks associated with them.

Caution should be exercised when entering tropical waters (north of Bundaberg in Queensland and Broome in Western Australia and all of the Northern Territory), particularly during “stinger season” (end October through to early May). Precautions should include:

  • Swimming within the designated stinger resistant netted enclosures on beaches patrolled by qualified life guards
  • Always reading and obeying beach safety signs
  • Wearing a full Lycra body suit or wetsuit when swimming in unprotected waters (these suits are commonly provided for loan by tour operators in the area)

If stung, seek urgent medical assistance and wash the sting thoroughly with household vinegar (provided on most affected beaches). Victims should be monitored for up to 45 mins out of the water for any adverse reactions.

Day 10: Sailing the Whitsundays

This morning, you will be met at qualia Long Pavilion and transferred by qualia guest services to the Hamilton Island Explore Jetty A9/10 (opposite the Explore Shop) prior to joining your full day Great Barrier Reef cruise.

Check-in time is in the late morning (Reservation # will be provided) and departure is in the late morning.

Please bring swimwear, towel, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, camera and a credit card for on-board purchases. Guest services will assist in getting you to the marina for embarkation.

🏝️
Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island is situated in the heart of the Whitsundays and is one of 74 tropical islands that lie between the Queensland Coast and the Great Barrier Reef. Over 80 per cent of Hamilton Island has been carefully preserved in its natural state so that visitors can continue to enjoy the pristine beauty of the island's fabulous beaches, unspoiled nature trails and secluded hideaways.

Catamaran Sail

This full day tour visits two locations within Bait Reef, a Special Management Area with pristine coral structures, fantastic marine life, and small group numbers.

Travel two hours on a purpose built motor vessel in comfort and style. This high-speed 24m catamaran rarely takes more than 80 passengers ensuring a boutique and intimate experience on board and a less crowded environment out at the reef. Once there, you will have a minimum of 3.5 hours to snorkel, swim, and generally indulge in water fun before returning to the dock at Hamilton Island.

Hydraulically lowered stairs and a platform that rests just below water level makes access to the reef easy and comfortable. Diving directly off the vessel’s stern allows to visit moorings which are quieter, keeping with the intimate feel of this tour.

Snorkel equipment is provided with your tour today. A sumptuous buffet style lunch, plus morning and afternoon tea are served on board.

Please note that this is a small group experience.
