In Bangkok and the South, days are usually hot with balmy evenings, so visitors should pack light and cool clothing. The average daily maximum is 88 F and the average daily minimum is 75 F. Siem Reap can be a bit warmer in January, sometimes pushing above 90 F, but the evenings cool down. Chiang Mai is a bit cooler, with evening lows around 55-60 F, so bring a light jacket or sweater.

Tipping Guide

To help you with tipping etiquette in Thailand, we have put together this handy guide:

  • Guides and Drivers: The general guideline would be a certain amount for each day you were hosted by the guide. For the driver, a certain amount for each day they provided service. Tipping here is very much an extra sign of appreciation for exceptional service, so feel free to give what you think is fair.
  • Restaurants: If you are dining at a simple street-side stand or food shop, you generally don’t tip. If you are at a casual sit-down restaurant, 10% will do it. If you are eating at an upper-market establishment check the bill as a 10% service charge is often added. Leaving extra is up to you, but you don’t need to leave a lot. Think of it as a generous rounding up if you were impressed with the service.
  • Hotels: If you’re pleased with the cleanliness of your room and the maid service, leave a certain amount per day on the bedside table. For bellboys, a certain amount is a fair starting point, though again it’s up to your discretion and can be more.

Flight to Bangkok from Seoul

Flight arriving in Bangkok from Seoul, South Korea in the early morning on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

Day 1: Arrive in Bangkok

Welcome to Thailand! The Bangkok portion of your trip has been arranged independently. Scenset has not booked any services, transportation or hotels until your departure transfer on 4 January.

At first glance, Bangkok seems like a city of mismatches. Modern skyscrapers loom over centuries-old temples and street vendors serve up spicy noodles across from Michelin-star restaurants, but it’s exactly these incongruencies that give Bangkok its universal appeal, luring everyone from student backpackers to elite travelers. Once you’ve acclimated to the heat—both in the air and on your plate—you won’t be able to get enough of the city’s piquant energy.

Dinner Recommendations

There are so many good places to eat in Bangkok- it really is hard to have a bad meal! The following three cover a variety of scenset scenarios - I'd be happy to recommend more based on the location of your hotel.

  • Supanniga Eating Room- Tha Tien Great riverside location with tasty Thai food. Not far from the Grand Palace and Wat Po, it makes for a great lunch or dinner spot after sightseeing.
  • nahm Michelin-starred restaurant consistently ranking among the best in the world. The menu features traditional Thai dishes with a modern twist. Vegetarian set menu is available. Advance bookings required!
  • Kitchen Yenaket Unassuming little spot serving delicious Thai and Isaan (Northeast) food, with a focus on using traditional recipes and locally-grown ingredients. Great casual lunch or dinner venue with plenty of vegetarian options

Recommendation only. If you would like to reserve a table, please let us know or ask your hotel concierge!

🍷
Rooftop Bars

There are no shortage of rooftop bars in Bangkok! Reservations are recommended and also note that most have a smart-casual dress code (no flip flops, no shorts)

  • lebua Sky Bar Featured in the moving ‘The Hangover 2’, Sky Bar is always busy. The views are incredible.
  • Seen – Located on the eastern side of the Chao Praya River, this new comer receives rave reviews for service, drinks and food.
  • Vertigo A longstanding favorite, Vertigo offers 360-degree views from the rooftop of the Banyan Tree hotel – 60+ stories high.
  • Abar Rooftop This rooftop bar boasts Bangkok’s best selection of gin but also has an extensive list of non-gin cocktails.
  • Brewski As the name may imply, this rooftop bar has a wide selection of beers and a more casual vibe.
  • Sala Rattanakosin Not sky high, but this lovely rooftop bar boasts wonderful views over the Chao Praya River and a laidback vibe.

Recommendation only. If you would like to reserve a table, please let us know or ask your hotel concierge!

Days 2 & 3: Independent Exploration of Bangkok

Enjoy two full days to explore Bangkok and recover from jet lag!

🛺
Suggested Activities
  • Historic Bangkok- The Ratanakosin district is home to some of Bangkok's most famous sites including the Grand Palace, Wat Po (with an impressive reclining Buddha) and Wat Arun on the opposite side of the river. It's a great area to walk around for a half day, and pop over to nearby Khao San Road if you want to see the (in)famous backpacker district
  • Chao Praya River & Klongs- Take a boat trip on the 'River of Kings' for a different perspective of the city. There are public boat taxis that run the length of the city as well as tourist hop-on-hop-off boats. Or you can hire a private long tail boat (avoid random touts; head to Tha Tien or Tha Chang pier) to venture through the 'klongs' (canals) for a more in-depth river exploration
  • Jim Thompson House Housed in a traditional Thai building, this hidden museum showcases Thailand's silk and weaving heritage as well as Mr Thompson's fascinating story
Thursday, 04 January, 2024
Day 4: Bangkok - Chiang Mai

Within a country that’s known for its culture and cuisine, Chiang Mai makes a strong case for the top spot in both areas. A defensive moat still encircles the Old City, along with the countless temples, restaurants, and markets squeezed inside of it. Venture outside of the city limits and Chiang Mai is surrounded by national parks on nearly every side, along with plenty of mountaintop temples and elephant sanctuaries to visit.

For the afternoon:

Elephant Encounters

Guide: will be provided
Departure: Early morning
Approximate duration: 6 hours

After an early breakfast, depart on a 1.5 hour drive to Elephant Jungle Sanctuary. You will travel by private, air conditioned vehicle with your guide until the entrance. From there, a traditional red truck and host from the Elephant Sanctuary will greet you to continue the last stretch of the journey.

Visitors to the Sanctuary will also be privileged enough to meet and interact with members of the Karen tribe, and witness stunning views of the surrounding jungle and mountains - All while interacting personally with friendly, happy elephants in a safe and sustainable environment.

On arrival you will meet your English-speaking guide and learn a little about the elephants, before changing into traditional Karen clothing.

After being allocated bananas and sugar cane to feed to the elephants, you will walk with your guide through the Sanctuary, where you will find free-roaming elephants and hear their individual stories. You can touch, feed, photograph, and interact with the elephants at your leisure while you learn about their lifestyle and behaviors.

Then accompany them to a nearby mud spa. Get muddy with the elephants as you apply a healthy cosmetic mud treatment to their skin. Next, you will walk with the elephants to a nearby river and join them in the water for a refreshing bath. Take a swim and help bathe and brush the elephants while they wade through and play in the water. Once the elephants are clean, you can take some final photos with them, and then it will be time to part ways with your new friends and change into some dry clothes.

Enjoy snacks and seasonal fresh fruit before driving back to Chiang Mai.

  • Note Your transfers will be private, but the elephant program is a small group experience (maximum of 6 people, shared tour) Lunch is not included, but your guide will recommend great places to stop .

Dinner Recommendations

A few of our favorite dining venues are:

  • Kiti Panit General Store (Closed on Tuesdays) serves up classic northern Thai cuisine in a beautifully restored 130-year-old teakwood mansion that was Chiang Mai's first general store.
  • The House By Ginger A Chiang Mai institution, this old city restaurant serves up refined Thai classics- and has a separate vegetarian menu.
  • The Good View A riverside favorite with Thais and locals alike - great food, plenty to drink and great live music.
  • Night Markets- It's hard to go wrong with Thai street food! Two food only markets worth checking out are Chang Phuek Gate, Chiang Mai Gate and Ploen Ruddee (which has a slightly more upmarket vibe)

Non-Thai

  • Hummus - Amazing Mediterranean cuisine served in a cozy setting
  • Barefoot Restaurant- Tucked in a courtyard near Thapae Gate, this casual little spot does Italian food with a Thai twist
  • Freebird Cafe- This organic, vegetarian spot has a mix of Thai, Myanmar and International cuisines as well as delicious juices. All money goes to support Myanmar refugees. A great stop if you are in the Nimmanhaemin area!

Recommendation only. If you would like to reserve a table, please let us know or ask your hotel concierge!

🍸
Drinking Recommendations

Chiang Mai doesn't have quite the bar scene that you find in Bangkok, but there are a few fun places to grab a drink- most of which have live music.

  • Thapae East Hole-in-the wall bar with live music most nights starting around 9pm. Good vibe, good drinks!
  • Nophaburi Bar A funky little bar serving up innovative cocktails made from Thai spirits and ingredients.
  • Riverside Located on the eastern banks of the Ping River, this bar hosts talented bands 6 nights a week. It can be VERY crowded and loud but always a good time.
  • North Gate Jazz- an oldie but a goodie. Slow service, average drinks but usually the best jazz in town- bands start at 9pm.

Dinner Reccomendations

Siem Reap was hard hit by COVID so many popular restaurants closed. By the 2023-24 high season, new options are sure to open but here are some reliable options that survived the pandemic to get you started

  • Cuisine Wat Damnak Award-winning restaurant which uses local ingredients and recipes and adds a slight French twist. There is only a fixed menu (no a la carte), which can be ordered as vegetarian if you prefer. Fine dining but with a casual vibe!
  • Khmer Kitchen- A Siem Reap institution, this former hole-in-the wall has grown to two branches in the Old Market area. The huge menu offers a variety of Khmer cuisine at reasonable prices- so order a bunch of dishes to share and sample.
  • Chanrey Tree Home-style cooking in a beautiful setting - a traditional Cambodian wooden house with elegant decor.
  • MamaShop Italian If you are tired of rice and want a change, head to this cute restaurant for homemade pastas and pizzas.
  • Kroya Shinta Mani’s Kroya restaurant is another delicious option for Khmer food. The head chef is influenced by his experience overseas but uses his skill to elevate his own country’s cuisine.
🍸
Neighborhoods to Explore for Dining, Drinking & Shopping

Siem Reap is always changing, with new bars popping up all the time. Rather than list specific bars and shops, it’s fun to walk around and see what catches your eye

  • Old Market Area- this refers to the area around Psar Chas, the old market in the center of town. Many restaurants and bars line the surrounding streets, most serving a mix of Khmer and Asian cuisines with some adding Western food to the menu. ‘Pub Street’, as the name suggests, is particularly popular for it’s bars which stay open until the wee hours of the morning.
  • Wat Bo & Wat Damnak Area- on the eastern banks of the Siem Reap River, this area has blossomed in popularity in recent years. The vibe is a bit more upmarket than the backpacker-favored Old Market. Head to MissWong’s Cocktail Bar to start or end your exploration of the area- it’s a classic! Or sample traditional Khmer rice wine at Sombai
  • Kandal Village- This small area is home to several artisan boutiques and quirky cafes. Located a short walk from Shinta Mani, it’s a fun place to browse for high-quality textiles and unique souveniers.
Tuesday, 09 January, 2024

Upon arrival, check in at the hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to relax and enjoy the hotel facilities.

Your stay: Anantara Lanyan

Why we love it for you? With great views of the Andaman Sea, this resort is one of our favorites in Phuket. The location of the resort essentially means that the peaceful bay in front of the resort is private. It's conveniently located close to the airport, as well as areas of interest, but far enough from the action to provide a feeling of peace and tranquility.

After a leisurely breakfast, head out for an unforgettable kayaking adventure in stunning Phong Nga bay.

🚣
Kayaking Adventure in Phong Nga Bay

Departure: Morning
Approximate duration: 8 hours

Enjoy a day out with John Gray Sea Canoe, an eco-tourism company offering award-winning tours since 1983.

You'll be picked up in the morning and transferred to the pier. Board a twin-engine escort boat and cast off into the sea, enjoying a light Thai lunch on the way.

After arriving in the Phong Nga Bay, a professional guide leads you through Phang Nga Bay’s “Tidal Nape Sea Caves” in kayaks.

Paddle through caves and hongs-- hidden cliff-lined lagoons-- which are populated with macaques, water monitors, kingfishers, mudskippers, egrets, Sea Eagles and Brahminy Kites.

The day comes to a close in the evening by floating your own self-made flower kratong in a spiritual and spectacular natural light show thanks to the bioluminescent algae. Then a dinner with delicious seafood and vegan buffet are served on the trip back as the sun sets.

  • Join In Experience: This is a group tour with shared transportation. You will have your own kayak
