In January, Thailand experiences cool and dry weather, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 32°C (69.8°F to 89.6°F). Cambodia enjoys the dry season during this month, characterized by lower humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 31°C (68°F to 87.8°F). Vietnam exhibits diverse weather patterns with cool and misty conditions in the north (will be provided, will be provided, will be provided to will be provided), mild and dry weather in central regions (will be provided, will be provided, will be provided to will be provided), and warm and dry conditions in the south (will be provided, will be provided to will be provided). Overall, these countries offer favorable climates for travel and exploration in January.
Comfortable and lightweight clothing is preferable in Southeast Asia. For temples, long pants/skirts are required for women and shirts that cover at least the shoulders. Long pants for men.
Footwear for days out should be comfortable runners, or sport sandals (sandals must have a strap around the heel if entering royal venues like Bangkok’s Grand Palace). It is also recommended to bring a casual evening outfit and comfortable shoes that you could wear to a chic cocktail lounge, but also walk a few blocks in as well. Things like hats and sunglasses are helpful on sunny days.
The far north of Thailand can get cool at night from November to January. Occasionally it drops to single digits Celsius so a good sweater or fleece and even gloves may be useful. You’ll also want to bring swimwear/athletic wear.
Thais are very easygoing and would rarely tell you if you are doing something that offends them. However, here are a few things to think about while you are in the Kingdom:
• Never touch adults on the head. Thais consider heads the spiritual apex of the body.
• Thais consider feet to be the spiritual low point of the body. Do not put them up on chairs, ledges; use them to point, etc.
• Do not blow your nose while eating. It is best to get up and step away from the table.
• In busy centers, keep your shirt on (unless on the beach of course).
• Refrain from speaking publicly about the Royal Family of Thailand out of sheer respect.
• Women must never come in physical contact with a monk.
• Smile early and smile often—it opens many doors

At first glance, Bangkok seems like a city of mismatches. Modern skyscrapers loom over centuries-old temples and street vendors serve up spicy noodles across from Michelin-star restaurants, but it’s exactly these incongruencies that give Bangkok its universal appeal, luring everyone from student backpackers to elite travelers. Once you’ve acclimated to the heat—both in the air and on your plate—you won’t be able to get enough of the city’s piquant energy.

Bangkok after dark is an ever-evolving experience – one that requires equal parts insight, initiative, and improvisation to navigate adeptly. Typically, the evening begins in the late afternoon to catch the magical natural light as evening descends. Strolling Bangkok’s back alleys reveals a cacophony of sights, sounds, and smells, with unusual shops, shrines, and street-food snacks seemingly around every turn. Hop into a passing tuk tuk to zip between spice and flower markets, historic neighborhoods, and hidden watering holes – you can never get lost when spontaneity and a spirit of adventure are your guide.
The night ends as you desire, anything from a riverside, rooftop bar with a stunning view of Wat Arun (the “Temple of Dawn”) or a more intimate experience in a hip neighborhood, such as Chinatown’s Na Na, where cafes, bars, and music venues cater to Bangkok’s vibrant creative community.

Within a country that’s known for its culture and cuisine, Chiang Mai makes a strong case for the top spot in both areas. A defensive moat still encircles the Old City, along with the countless temples, restaurants, and markets squeezed inside of it. Venture outside of the city limits and Chiang Mai is surrounded by national parks on nearly every side, along with plenty of mountaintop temples and elephant sanctuaries to visit.
On arrival you will be met by a local host and driver and head out directly to a local family home, where you will have the unique opportunity to learn Thai home cooking from a local family.
The Raunkaew-Yanon family has been living on the same property in Hang Dong village for more than 150 years, and the local cuisine you will learn to cook and indulge in are deeply rooted in this legacy. Today will be as much a cooking experience as it will be a cultural one! You will be welcomed at the home by a family member who will introduce you to his family’s home and explain the nuances of the now rare to find Lanna-style houses and rice barns situated across the compound. You will then be led on a stroll through the extensive family gardens and rice field, getting to know many types of fruits, vegetables, and herbs which the family uses in their everyday cooking. And you will as well!
You will be brought to a private, open-air, wooden pavilion housing the preparation section, charcoal braziers, and a charming dining area. No electric stoves here -- this is about learning traditional home cooked recipes with authentic Northern Thai flavors. One of the family members will guide you through the preparation of five unique Northern dishes. On the menu are: Auo Kai (dry red curry with herbs), Nam Prik Oong (Northern style tomato and chilli paste - kind of like a Thai Bolognese), Tom Som Kai (hot and sour soup), Phat Makauyay Moo (stir-fried eggplant with mince), and a banana in coconut milk dessert. Enjoy your creations along with the family and let the local vibes soak in before heading back to Chiang Mai.

Today you head out on two wheels as you cycle the scenic countryside of Chiang Mai. You'll escape the city and cycle into the heart of Northern Thailand’s lush valleys, mountain landscapes, local shrines, rice paddies, and rural charm. These are the postcard visuals for which the area is famous. Today’s ride explores the communities and great outdoors north of the Mae Rim valley along the Ping River, away from the bustle of the city. You'll cycle mostly flat roads with mild hills, and of course, experience signature Northern Thai food along the way. There will be plenty of snacks, water, and soft drinks, and stops to keep you fueled. You return to the hotel in the late afternoon, where the evening is at leisure.
Note: bicycles are well-maintained, high-performance bikes with front suspension, helmets, gloves and water bottle. In total, about 25 to 40 kilometers of paved road can be covered, though this is flexible and completely doable by those with an average fitness level. Roads are mostly sealed and flat with some opportunities to go onto dirt trails, but the route has been checked for safety prior to your taking part.

The multicolor descriptions of Chiang Rai’s top sights—White Temple, Emerald Buddha, Black House, Blue Temple—are an indication that it’s one of Thailand’s most eye-catching cities (the surrounding mountains don’t hurt, either). But walk around the outdoor markets and taste and smell become the main sensory pleasures. It won’t take long to train your nose to lead you to the stall with the best khao soi, a North Thai specialty.
You leave Chiang Mai behind today and head 3 hours north to the mountains of Chiang Rai. Checking out of the hotel, you take the winding road up to the mountains where you are checked in and your bags are taken to your room; then, you head right out on an adventure.
Get ready for a full day of exploring a large swath of what the scenic countryside surrounding Chiang Rai has to offer. And you’ll do it in the best way you know how: on bicycles with the breeze in your faces! The day will begin with a trip to a cave temple, Wat Tham Phra. You'll spend some time exploring this vernacular temple, get used to your bicycles, and then take off to pedal along the Kok River, through fertile farmland, creaking bamboo stands, and to a hill tribe village surrounded by limestone mountains.
Here you will have a local lunch, and then carry on through small back roads leading out of the village, up and over some medium-grade mountains, passing by further Ahka and Lisu settlements. When you’ve had enough biking, you’ll board a private longtail boat waiting for you on the river and head back down the river to Chiang Rai town. Sit back, relax, and take in the scenset unfolding along the shores as you reflect on this epic day.
Heading back to the hotel just before sunset, there is time to relax, shower and unwind and dive into discussion on the day's exploration. We recommend eating at the hotel tonight, although just down from the hotel there are a couple of cool restaurants worthy of seeking out if you wish. We will give you details on these in advance of your trip!
