Indonesian & Malaysian Borneo

Indonesian Borneo, known as Kalimantan, and Malaysian Borneo, comprising the states of Sabah and Sarawak, offer distinct tourism experiences rooted in their unique cultural, natural, and geographical differences. Kalimantan, with its vast and largely untouched rainforests, is a haven for those seeking adventure and a glimpse into the traditional Dayak culture, alongside the opportunity to visit conservation projects like the orangutan sanctuaries. Its remote and less developed nature appeals to eco-tourists and those looking to immerse themselves in Indonesia's rich biodiversity away from the crowds. In contrast, Malaysian Borneo is more accessible and developed for tourism, boasting world-class diving sites around Sipadan Island, Mount Kinabalu for trekking, and a more structured approach to wildlife tourism, with well-established national parks and conservation areas. While both regions share the island of Borneo's ecological and cultural richness, their tourism offerings cater to different preferences, from the rugged and raw adventures in Kalimantan to the more curated and diverse experiences in Sabah and Sarawak.

Tanjung Puting National Park

Tanjung Puting National Park, located in the heart of Borneo, Indonesia, is a renowned conservation area and a haven for diverse wildlife, including the endangered orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and crocodiles. This vast tropical rainforest ecosystem plays a crucial role in biodiversity conservation and is recognized for its extensive research and rehabilitation centers for orangutans. The park's rich biodiversity and successful conservation initiatives make it a vital area for environmental science and a fascinating destination for eco-tourists seeking to witness conservation in action amidst the beauty of untouched nature.

Conservation & Research

Tanjung Puting National Park houses several key camps, each playing a unique role in wildlife conservation and research. A camp serving as the gateway to the park, serves as an introduction to the area's conservation efforts, often hosting educational programs. Another camp is known for its orangutan rehabilitation efforts, where young and adolescent orangutans are nurtured back to health and taught survival skills necessary for eventual re-release into the wild. Camp Leakey, the most famous of these, stands as a pioneering research center established in the early 1970s. It has become synonymous with orangutan conservation, offering deep insights into the behavior and ecology of these primates through ongoing studies. Together, these camps underscore the park's commitment to protecting its remarkable biodiversity and provide visitors with unparalleled opportunities to learn about and witness conservation firsthand.
